“Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students”

-- For newly enrolled students

These rules are formulated to promote the level of improvement in SUFE’s quality of education

for international students, referenced from Pilot Scheme of Shanghai Government Scholarships

for International Students (Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (diplomatic) No.78【2006】)

and Regulation of Shanghai Government Scholarships for International Students (Shanghai

Municipal Education Commission (financial) No. 77【2006】).

I. Categories and Standards

SGS award for newly enrolled students are divided into two categories, namely, class A and class B.

Details are as follows:

1. Class A Scholarship (Full Scholarship)

Class A scholarship provides monetary aid for academically excellent international students

for graduate programs in SUFE. In reference to the current standards of Full Scholarships of

Chinese Government Scholarships implemented by Chinese Ministry of Education, SUFE

provides the Class A scholarship recipients with:

1) Exemption from tuition fee of corresponding academic year;

2) Basic accommodation (one bed, double room);

3) Insurance against major illnesses and accidents;

4) Basic learning material fees (600 RMB per person per year)

5) Monthly living allowance of RMB 1700 for master candidates and RMB 2000 for doctoral

candidates.

2. Class B Scholarship (Partial Scholarship)

Class B scholarship provides monetary aid for academically excellent international students for

degree education in SUFE. Class B scholarship recipients are provided by SUFE with:

1) Exemption from tuition fee of corresponding academic year;

2) Basic learning material fee (600 RMB per person per year for both doctoral and master

candidates);

3) Insurance against major illness and accidents.

II. Qualification for Application

1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health;

2. The age of bachelor applicants should be no more than 25 years old; the age of master

applicants should be no more than 35 years old; the age of doctoral applicants should be no

more than 40 years old;

3. Doctoral applicants should have obtained master degree, master applicants should have

obtained bachelor degree, bachelor applicants should have graduated from high school;

4. Applicants who graduate from highly-ranked universities in China or other countries and have

passed the new HSK5 test are preferred;

5. Applicants should have been accepted by SUFE as fall semester degree students in

corresponding academic year;

6. Applicants should not be awardees of other Chinese Government scholarships, foreign

Government scholarships or any kinds of scholarships at the same time;

7. Programs applied should be programs that enroll international students and taught in Chinese

(exclude MBA, MPA and Chinese & foreign cooperation programs).

III. Application Procedure

1. Applicants need to fulfill SUFE’s international student online application.

2. The materials (two copies) that applicants need to hand in or post are as follows:

1) Fill out, print and sign Application Form of the Shanghai Government Scholarship for

International Students at the website of Study in Shanghai.

2) Personal statement written in English with no less than 1000 words which includes reason

for applying, family financial situation, personal study and work experience, awards,

specialty, etc.

3. After materials audit, postgraduate and doctoral program applicants should come to SUFE for

interview and will be qualified for scholarship review only after being accepted as degree

student of the next academic year. Interviews are normally set around the end of May to the

beginning of July. Students will be directly informed of exact time and place of interviews by

the admission office via email or telephone.

IV. Time for Application and Review

Applicants of both Class A and Class B scholarship should hand in or post application materials to

the Admission Office of International Culture Exchange School (ICES) of Shanghai University of

Finance and Economics (SUFE) by May, 20th each year. The review committee of Shanghai

Government Scholarship for International Students will review after the deadline of application,

discuss and propose the final list of recipients. The list of recipients will be announced on the

website of ICES (URL: http://ices.sufe.edu.cn).

V. The time length and termination of scholarship

1. In principal, the time length of the scholarship equals to the length of education, as in 4 years

for undergraduate students, 2 years for postgraduate students and 3 or 4 years for doctoral

students (differed by programs). One cannot make optional changes of program. Recipient

will continue his/her study as self-financed student if he/she isn’t able to graduate within the

set time period of the program.

2. Scholarship recipients should report and register to SUFE at pre-set time. Students who fail to

register on time without approval will be deemed as giving up the status as student

automatically and will be deprived of the qualification of scholarship.

3. Class A and Class B Scholarship recipients should be reviewed annually. Students who pass the

review will be awarded continuously and the scholarship will be terminated for students who

failed to pass the review.

4. Scholarship will be terminated if one violates the rules of university or fails to continue study

due to grades or health condition.
