37º Salón Nacional de Fotoperiodismo
In the 37th National Photojournalism Exhibition, the show with the longest tradi-
tion in the country, we award the best photographic works taken during 2014 in
the various news fields.
With more than two thousand images submitted by 103 photographers working
professionally in Chile and abroad, the 37ª year of this contest has given awards
to 152 photographs, by 38 photographers, for their quality and journalistic power,
having portrayed the different social, cultural and political manifestations of Chi-
lean society. Together, they address a wide variety of subjects that show us and
connect us with the different events, the people, and the social processes taking
place in Chile.
In the digital era, each year brings new technological tools that provide ways
to depict a story, a time, a news spot, a reality. Speed, definition, and pixels are
allied with the fundamentals of photography. There is a creative perspective that
lies within an event giving the photographer the ability to show it, denounce it and
disseminate it to the world with credibility.
Organized by the Unión de Reporteros Gráficos y Camarógrafos de Chile, the
show began in 1950 as the first Experimental Photography Contest. Years later it
would become what we know today as the National Photojournalism Exhibition.
From this date, photojournalists residing in Chile and citizens carrying out pho-
tojournalism work overseas have sent their pieces to Fotoprensa.

The Unión de Reporteros Gráficos y Camarógrafos de Chile represents media
professionals throughout the country and since 1938 has played a fundamen-
tal role in the development of skills and the organizing of the photographers
working in different types of communication media, national and international
news agencies and among those who carry out independent photojournalism.
Its mission is to stimulate, promote, and disseminate the value of professional
photography and recognize its role in journalism.
We experience change. The news does not belong to the communication media
and the number of independent groups that organize to show their work is on
the rise, bringing higher standards of quality, expression, professionalism and
credibility to photojournalism. The organization of this show seeks to promote
these values in its different fields of action.
This book is the result of the work of national photojournalism professionals.
We present the public with the quality and power of this unique journalistic lan-
guage, which has the ability to reveal, exhibit and document the different social,
cultural and political manifestations of daily life in Chilean society.
We appreciate the professionalism, passion and freedom of the work sent in this
year. All of them, whether awarded or not, constitute a valuable summary of the
most important events of 2014 in Chile and around the world, from the unique
perspective of the photojournalists depicting a country that has as many realities
as there are eyes behind the camera.

37º Salón Nacional de Fotoperiodismo
En la 37ª versión del Salón Nacional de Fotoperiodismo, la muestra con mayor
tradición en el país, premiamos a los mejores trabajos fotográficos registrados
durante el año 2014 en distintos ámbitos noticiosos.
Con más de dos mil imágenes presentadas por 103 fotógrafos que se desempe-
ñan profesionalmente en Chile o en el exterior, la 37ª edición del concurso ha
premiado a 152 fotografías de 38 autores, por su calidad y potencia periodística,
con las que han registrado las distintas manifestaciones sociales, culturales y
políticas de la sociedad chilena. En conjunto, abarcan una amplia gama de te-
máticas que nos muestra y conecta con distintos sucesos del país, su pueblo y
los procesos sociales en curso.
En la era digital, en cada versión nos enfrentamos con nuevas herramientas tec-
nológicas que aportan posibilidades para retratar una historia, un momento, una
noticia, una realidad. Velocidad, definición, pixeles son aliados de lo imprescin-
dible en la fotografía, esa mirada creativa que se interna en un acontecimiento
con posición para exponerlo, denunciarlo y difundirlo al mundo con credibilidad.
Organizado por la Unión de Reporteros Gráficos y Camarógrafos de Chile, el
certamen tiene su origen en 1950 con en el primer Concurso Experimental de
Fotografía, el que años después se convertiría en lo que hoy conocemos como
el Salón Nacional de Fotoperiodismo. Desde entonces, los reporteros gráficos
que viven en el país y los residentes en otras latitudes del planeta envían sus
creaciones a Fotoprensa.
La Unión de Reporteros Gráficos y Camarógrafos de Chile agrupa a profesiona-
les de todo el país y desde 1938 ha jugado un rol fundamental en el desarrollo
de competencias y organización de los fotógrafos y fotógrafas pertenecientes a
los distintos medios de comunicación, agencias de noticias nacionales e inter-
nacionales y entre quienes ejercen el fotoperiodismo de manera independiente.
Su tarea: estimular, promover y difundir el valor del trabajo profesional en la
fotografía y reconocer su rol en la información periodística.
Vivimos cambios, la noticia no es patrimonio de los medios de comunicación y
los grupos independientes que se organizan para mostrar sus trabajos aumenta,
planteando nuevos desafíos de calidad, expresividad, profesionalismo y credibi-
lidad al fotoperiodismo. La organización de esta muestra busca respaldar esos
valores en sus distintos ámbitos de acción.
Este libro es el resultado del trabajo de los profesionales del fotoperiodismo na-
cional. Ponemos a disposición del público la calidad y potencia de este lenguaje
único, periodístico, con capacidad de revelar, exponer y documentar las distintas
manifestaciones sociales, culturas y políticas del cotidiano vivir de la sociedad
chilena.
Agradecemos el profesionalismo, la pasión y la libertad de los trabajos enviados
en esta nueva versión. Todos ellos, premiados o no, constituyen un valioso re-
sumen de los hechos más destacados del año 2014 en Chile y el mundo, desde
la particular mirada de los fotoperiodistas para retratar un país desde tantas
realidades como ojos que se sitúan detrás del lente.

“Es una Muestra de lo que está pasando en nuestro país.”
Egresado de Licenciatura en Artes de la Universidad de Chile, durante 37
años ha trabajado como fotógrafo deportivo y de prensa en las revistas Foto
Sport, Estadio, Deporte Total y Triunfo, y en los diarios La Época, La Mone-
da, el Zoológico, La Nación. Se ha dedicado también a la labor académica,
impartiendo clases de foto-periodismo en el Instituto Alpes. Actualmente es
director de la Agencia independiente Luna Cornata.
“It is a display of what’s happening in our country.”
Graduated with a degree in Arts from Universidad de Chile, he has worked
for 37 years as a press and sports photographer for magazines Foto Sport,
Estadio, Deporte Total and Triunfo, and in the newspapers La Época, La
Moneda, el Zoológico, La Nación. He has also been active in the academic
realm, teaching photojournalism classes at Instituto Alpes. Currently, he is
director of the independent agency Luna Cornata.

Luis Navarro
Fotógrafo chileno / Chilean Photographer
“Si hay alguien que está siempre en sintonía, es el reportero gráfico, pues tiene una
responsabilidad social muy grande.”
Formó parte del equipo fundador del diario La Época. Trabajó en la revista
“Pluma y Pincel” y como editor de fotografía del diario Fortín Mapocho. Fue
fundador y último presidente de AFI, entre 1981 y 1992. Actualmente es fotó-
grafo del Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho. Con más de 40 años de oficio,
durante la dictadura militar trabajó para la Vicaría de la Solidaridad, entre
1976 y 1981. El año 2010 fue reconocido con el Premio Altazor.
“If there is someone who is always tuned in to what’s going on, it is the photojour-
nalist. His sense of social responsibility is huge.”
Luis became part of the founding team of the newspaper La Época. He
worked in the magazine “Pluma y Pincel” and as photography editor for the
newspaper Fortín Mapocho. He was founder and former president of AFI,
from 1981 to 1992. Currently he works as photographer for the Centro Cul-
tural Estación Mapocho. With a career that spans over 40 years, he worked
for the Vicariate of Solidarity during the military dictatorship, from 1976 to
1981. In 2010, he was recognized and named the winner the Altazor Award.
Roberto Pera
Fotógrafo argentino / Argentinian Photographer
“Me voy con los ojos llenos de fotografía y eso siempre es una buena noticia, una
alegría y un honor.”
Con casi 40 años de trabajo, ha participado de numerosas muestras colecti-
vas como “El Periodismo Gráfico Argentino” (Buenos Aires), “Continente In-
fanza” (Roma, Italia), entre otras. Ha colaborado en la edición de numerosos
libros, como “Democracia Vigilada”, “La Fotografía en la Historia Argentina”
y “30 Años de Democracia”. Actualmente, es Editor Jefe de Fotografía de la
sección de Espectáculos del diario Clarín de Argentina.

an honor.”
With almost 40 years’ experience, he has participated in numerous collective
shows such as “El Periodismo Gráfico Argentino” (Buenos Aires), “Conti-
nente Infanza” (Roma, Italy), among others. He has collaborated in the pub-
lication of numerous books, like “Democracia Vigilada”, “La Fotografía en
la Historia Argentina” and “30 Años de Democracia”. Currently, he is Chief
Photography Editor for the Arts and Entertainment section of the newspaper
Clarín in Argentina.
Natacha Pisarenko

“La foto ganadora representa un tema súper importante en Chile y a nivel mundial”
Se inició en la fotografía en 1998, en el diario La Nación. Desde el año 2002
integra el staff de la agencia The Associated Press (AP), con base en Buenos
Aires. Entre sus coberturas más destacadas se cuentan la guerra de Afga-
nistán en el año 2003; el terremoto en Chile del 27 de febrero de 2010 y los
33 mineros atrapados en una mina de Copiapó, ese mismo año.
“The winning photo represents a very important issue in Chile and worldwide”.
She began working in photography in 1998 at the newspaper La Nación. Sin-
ce 2002, she has worked as part of the staff for The Associated Press (AP),
based in Buenos Aires. Among some of the most famous events she has co-
vered is the war in Afghanistan in 2003; the February 27th, 2010 earthquake
in Chile, and the 33 miners trapped in a mine in Copiapó that same year.
Catalina Le-Bert
Periodista y Fotógrafa chilena / Chilean Journalist and Photographer
“Los fotógrafos se están tomando un tiempo para hacer trabajos más cerrados, de

Con más de una década de labor profesional, en la actualidad es Coordina-
dora Periodística de Emol-TV, sección digital en la que desde el año 2011
produce y conduce los microprogramas “El Laboratorio” y “El Tercer Ojo”,
dedicados exclusivamente a la fotografía.

With more than a decade of professional work experience, she is currently
Journalistic Coordinator for Emol-TV’s Digital Department. Since 2011, this

Eder Chiodetto
Curador de fotografía, profesor y periodista brasileño / Brazilian Curator of
photography, professor and journalist
“Los fotoperiodistas están cubriendo muy bien los grandes temas que tocan a
la sociedad chilena.”
Maestro en Comunicación de la Escuela de Comunicación y Artes de la Uni-
versidad de São Paulo, se desempeña como director de Ateliê Fotô, de la
que es su fundador. Con 30 años de trayectoria, ha sido asesor de importan-
tes premios internacionales como Prix Pictet, Paul Huf Award, Master Class
World Press Photo y Photoville/Fence.
“The photojournalists are covering very well the big issues in Chilean society.”
Masters in Communication from the School of Communication and Arts at
the University of São Paulo, he currently works as director of Ateliê Fotô, of
which he is the founder. During his 30-year career, he has been an advisor
for important international awards like Prix Pictet, Paul Huf Award, Master
Class World Press Photo and Photoville/Fence.
Alejandro Olivares

“Se está avanzando a nuevas miradas, a nuevas lecturas del fotoperiodismo
mucho más amplias.”
En la actualidad se desempeña como fotógrafo y editor de la revista The
Clinic. En sus 11 años de trayectoria profesional, su trabajo ha sido recono-
cido con diversos premios nacionales e internacionales, entre ellos, Premio
Rodrigo Rojas Denegri 2013; Premio Fifv - Ekho Gallery 2014; Fotografía del
Año, PhotoFest Querétaro – México 2012; Foto del Año 2011 Salón Nacional
de Fotoperiodismo.

tojournalism that are much broader.”
Currently, he works as photographer and editor of the magazine The
Clinic. In his 11-year professional career, his work has won many na-
tional and international awards, among them being, 2013 Rodrigo Rojas
Denegri Award; 2014 Fifv - Ekho Gallery Award; 2012 Photograph of the
Year, PhotoFest Querétaro – Mexico; 2011 Photo of the Year –National

5-year career photographer from Chile

Currently part of the collective “Migrar Photo”, Diego, together with

a group of professional, has developed a series of shows, workshops
and exhibitions.

I believe this photograph is relevant at any time and in any sociopo-

litical context. We are in a state of constant social tension and these
days the criminalization of social protesting makes it very difficult to
take this type of photo. Especially when there are people defending
and justifying the actions of Chilean Police, for example, like in the
recent events in Valparaíso, where two students were killed and an-
other critically injured during the May 21st protests. We are faced with
a scenario in which we have a great task to do as communicators,
photographers and journalists, considering that “deranged” and com-
fortable population.

Everything that is happening is paradoxical. While this situation is going

on, for me it is almost like a picture, an oil painting done by hand, that
freezes the moment and seems to be, almost, a movie in slow motion. It
is the portrait of violence, of inequality, of repression, of indiscretion, of
tear gas, of water with chemicals and “tanks”, because that is what the
police vehicles repressing the students look like. Neither do I believe it
is necessary to applaud the actions of the “masked student”, but when
you are there in the street and you see all these men in green with their
armor and their robots, willing to do anything in order to satiate their
thirst for “vengeance”, anyone with strong ideals would pick up a rock
and throw it.

It is hard to watch, Chilean Police, adults that supposedly have sound

judgment, playing war with kids. The young people know what they are
getting into and I think they are attracted to the idea of fighting against
the Special Forces, entrenched in their schools, a place they know, where
they can hide and protect themselves, throw rocks, chairs, Molotov cock-
tails. But if you look at it objectively, that’s what it is, adults playing war
with children.

Fotógrafo con cinco años de trayectoria formado en Chile.

Actualmente es parte del colectivo “Migrar Photo”, junto a un grupo de

profesionales con los que ha desarrollado una serie de muestras, talle-
res y exposiciones.

Creo que esta fotografía es transversal a cualquier época y contexto so-

ciopolítico. Estamos en constante tensión social y en estos días de cri-
minalización de la protesta social se hace muy difícil conseguir que este
tipo de imágenes sean. Particularmente cuando hay personas defen-
diendo y justificando el actuar de Carabineros, por ejemplo, en hechos
como los ocurridos recientemente en Valparaíso, con dos estudiantes
asesinados y otro gravemente herido durante las manifestaciones del 21
de Mayo. Estamos ante un escenario en el que tenemos una gran tarea
como comunicadores, fotógrafos y periodistas, frente a esa población
“enajenada” y acomodada.

Es paradójico todo lo que ocurre alrededor. Mientras sucede esta esce-

na, para mi es casi como un cuadro, un óleo hecho a mano, que congela
el momento y que parece ser, casi, una película en cámara lenta. Es el
retrato de la violencia, de la desigualdad, de la represión, del descrite-
rio, del gas lacrimógeno, de agua con químicos y “tanques”, porque eso
parecen los vehículos policiales reprimiendo a los estudiantes. Tampoco
creo que hay que hacerle un monumento al “estudiante encapuchado”,
pero cuando estas ahí en la calle y ves a todos esos señores de verde con
su armadura y sus robots, dispuestos a todo con tal de saciar su sed de
“venganza”, cualquier persona con las ideas bien claras, tomaría una
piedra y la lanzaría.

Es complicado ver eso, Carabineros, personas adultas, que supues-

tamente tienen un criterio formado, jugando a la guerra con niños.
Los chicos saben a lo que van y creo que los atrae pelear contra
Fuerzas Especiales, atrincherados en sus colegios, un lugar que
conocen, y donde pueden esconderse y resguardarse, lanzar piedras,
sillas, molotov. Pero si lo ves fríamente, es eso, adultos jugando a la

Las protestas estudiantiles en Chile se han extendido
por más de diez años y han motorizado las demandas
por transformaciones profundas en el sistema educati-
vo del chileno, que hasta ahora no han sido satisfechas.

se originó la tarde del 12 de abril de 2014
es considerado el mayor siniestro urbano
en la historia de Chile. Las llamas consu-
mieron 12 barrios periféricos emplazados
en los cerros de la ciudad. El fuego estuvo
activo durante cuatro días, causó la muerte
de 15 personas, destruyó cerca de 3 mil vi-
viendas y miles de damnificados.

ered the largest urban disaster in Chile’s
history. Flames consumed 12 outlying
neighborhoods located in the city’s hills.
The fire burned for four days, taking the

Chile ha sido el foco noticioso desde el año 2011 producto de las movilizaciones
estudiantiles en demanda de una educación pública, gratuita y de calidad. Cada
manifestación congrega a cientos de miles de personas y terminan con grupos
de estudiantes enfrentándose contra la represión policial. Este trabajo es un en-
sayo fotográfico sobre algunas de las escenas de estas movilizaciones.

Chile has been in the news since 2011 for its student marches demanding free,
quality public education. Each march congregates thousands of people and
ends with student groups clashing against police repression. This work is a
photographic essay of scenes from these demonstrations.

de la década de los ‘90 la industria del salmón ubica a Chile en el segundo lugar
de la producción mundial. Desde su instalación, las salmoneras desatan impor-
tante procesos de transformación económica, social y cultural en el sur de Chile.

gates. A cloud of humidity reins over the facility and the peeling paint is evidence
of its abandonment. But, in the penitentiary center’s “Calle 4” it’s a different
world: 252 prisoners standing and organized into rows pray and sing with their
hands in the air along a corridor of cells. They have gotten up at 6:00 am to do
the cleaning and wash their clothes in turns. They spend the entire morning in
workshops held in the same hallway, with the smell of air freshener. The walls
are recently painted, the bathrooms are new, and they installed the ceramic tile
and laminate flooring themselves.
For the prison guards, outnumbered by the prison population to the tune of 70%,
the evangelicals are a solution for communal living inside the facility. For the
rest of the prisoners, they are “those that hide behind the Bible”.

como oficio y pasión. Sus vidas nos son
fáciles, pero todo se olvida al momen-
to de subir al escenario, aunque a veces
sean más artistas que público. El “amor al
arte” es su mayor consigna y la tolerancia
a la diversidad su principal invitado.

The sequence shows the story of a trav-

elling circus on the outskirts of the city
of Antofagasta that day after day fights to
keep its drag queen show alive.
They are part of a family of homosexuals
that have taken the art of dressing in drag
as their profession and passion. Their
lives are not easy, but all is forgotten
once on stage, although sometimes the
artists onstage outnumber the audience.
