SKILLS
* = see appendix
This project will be achieved using a variety of different hardware and software. The
cinematic part of the video engages in numerous camera techniques and production
skills which will allow me to convey this concept/message visually. I intend to combine
motion graphics into this short film to showcase my skills in kinetic typography and
convey this concept using a range of different media.
The pre-production stage of this project will consist of significant research into cinematic
films, typography, short-film, motion graphics, posters and websites. This research will
inspire me with the development and justification of methods used in the production and
post-production stages. This stage will also engage in sketching of idea generation and
numerous prototypes. A storyboard will allow me to layout my scenes and graphic design
layouts for the typography, poster and website elements. I will conduct prototypes for
typography designs, transitions and colour grading for the film, hyper-lapse/time-lapse
footage, poster and website designs.
The production stage of this project will engage in filming in numerous locations that
revolve around the idea/concept. One location is Manly Beach, Sydney because the
beach represents getting outside and experiencing more which is part of my concept.
Another location would be around North Head because the there is a lot of flora which
makes quality scenic footage.
For the motion graphics element, the production stage will involve sketching out designs
on paper and then creating that design in After Effects. To achieve ‘kinetic’ typography
I will need to add visual displays of text rather than words so which has more of a effect
than text because viewer’s are attracted to images and visuals.

All these skills are ICT skills that i will need to effectively use in my production and post-production
process to ensure a professional looking cinematic/motion graphics video.
Tracking
Tracking refers to a consistent degree of
increase (or sometimes decrease) of space
between letters to affect density in a line
or block of text (definition)*. Tracking is
useful for titles of cinematic videos and can
be used as an animation.
Leading
Leading refers to the distance between
the baselines of successive lines of type.
The term originated in the days of hand-
typesetting, when thin strips of lead were
inserted into the forms to increase the
vertical distance between lines of type
(definition)*.
Design layout
The design layout is combing all three
techniques; kerning, tracking and leading
and creating a graphic design layout by
manipulating the fonts and sizes. Words
that are larger mean there is more emphasis
and meaning to the word. Text can also be
placed vertically to match a layout
These three techniques; kerning, tracking and leading were used all throughout my
typography project. Manipulating these elements allowed me to distort text to match
my desired graphic design layout.
I chose to use ‘BEBAS’ for all my titles in my portfolio which is a modern, sans-serif all caps font.
I chose to use the standard serif font ‘Times New Roman” for all the body of my text because it is
the standard font to use as it is easy to read.
SErif Sans-serif
Serif is a small line attached to the end Sans-serif fonts is text without the
of a stroke in a letter or symbol. These small lines and sharp edges. Sans-serif

Typography inspiration
Eminem - Rap God typography active listening typography
Mome - Aloha
The song ‘Aloha’ by Mome has a similar style to
the song I am searching for in my project. The start
of the song is slow and has a build up towards the
drop towards the middle of the song. This will allow
me to introduce my footage with slow motion shots
at the start and as the song builds up my footage
will become fast paced. At the drop of the song I
will use fast transitions and time-lapse/hyper-lapse
shots to demonstrate effective editing by using the
audio.
I decided to use Odesza’s song ‘A Moment Apart’ which played a major factor into design modifications
as I had to base my typography, camera shots and editing around the song by matching it to the pace, mood
and volume.
Icons
Icons/2D flat images are an important part
of typography, because they display a visual
representation rather than a written expression of
a word, which attracts the viewers attention. Icons
are graphic symbols which are most commonly
formated as a vector graphic. Icons mostly use the
file types .SVG, .PNG, .AI. For my project I used
icons to visually display words on the screen in the
form of an .SVG file. This file type is ideal
GIFS
A GIF is a lossless format for image files that
supports both animated and static images. GIF’s
use a mechanism known as interlacing that makes
images appear faster on-screen by first displaying a
lower resolution version of the image and gradually
showing the full resolution of the file. I chose to use
a GIF in my typography section to display a simple
animation rather than a static image. I chose to use
a lossless GIF of a clock ticking to show the word
‘Time’.
Lossy vs lossless
Transitions
In my film I use numerous transitions such as
zoom, slide, fade, cut and glitch transitions. These
techniques are used to effectively change between
footage while maintaining flow and adding an effect
for the user to enjoy watching. These transitions
were made using key-frames in the After Effects
time-line where the position, scale, opacity and
rotation were changed to create the effect between
the two clips. The smooth zoom transition uses the
mirror effect in after effects to make the clip look
continuous when zooming in and out. A motion
blur is also added to blur out the mirrored edges
when zooming in or out.
Lumetri colour
Lumetri colour is a tool in after effects that is
used to colour grade and colour correct footage
in after effects. Lumetri colour consists of basic
correction, creative, curves, colour wheels, HSL
secondary and Vignette. If a lumetri colour is used
on a layer it can copied over to multiple layers to
apply the same look to give the film consistency and
set a mood through colour. The RGB curves can
be adjusted here to adjust the primary colour in the
footage. The curve can be adjusted at the top which
will increase highlights, in the middle for mid tones
and at the bottom to adjust shadows. A look for
cinematic footage is to make an S shape on the RGB
curve which will increase highlights and decrease
shadows giving it a cinematic look.
Rendering
Rendering is the process of frames of a movie
from a composition inside After Effects. Rendering
can be seen as the process to view the final output of
a movie, however rendering processes are also seen
in After effects when wanting to preview footage
layers in a composition. When I begin to render
my project I will set my resolution to 1920x1080p
which is HD quality. I will also set my frame rate
to 29.97fps (30fps) which is standard for films. My
render will be have a bit depth of 16 meaning it will
be using 65536 colours. For the video codec I will
choose the H.264 format which renders out to a
.MOV file which can be played in QuickTime.
Masking/Rotoscoping
The Mask tool in After Effects is essentially
a crop tool but the crop can be controlled by an
unlimited amount of points making it easy to mask
around subjects or backgrounds creating points on
edges to change movement between points. Masking
is commonly used for background replacement
or masking placing layers such as text behind
the subject to make the text look like it is placed
further back. Rotoscoping is a similar tool but is
more effective because it is an automatic tool where
masking is a manual. Once rotoscoping is used on
one layer, After Effects will try its best to match that
mask on the frames that you have selected.
Sony
Sony’s website features a simple yet interactive
design. The website has a horizontal menu which
doesn’t have parallax scrolling so when the user
wants to access the menu they will have to scroll
to the top. They have all their social media icons
which are hyper-links on the right hand side of the
page with parallax scrolling meaning users can
click them at any time on the site. Sony’s website
has a store page where it lists all it’s products
allowing users to purchase products on the site
using an external payment system such as paypal.
Sony’s website could be improved by adding more
interactivity such as rollovers, parallax scrolling
and adding a colour scheme.
Artists web
Artist’s Web is an website nominated for
the Awwwards website competition. It features
advanced interactivity with numerous rollovers,
scrolling and slide-show features that create an
experience for the user. On the home page it has
the logo in the middle with pop out menu in the
top right corner. They have their slogan next to the
logo and when the mouse rolls over the slogan it
creates a word wave effect. The menu features a
slide-show of each page of the site giving the user a
quick preview to each page design.
Adobe help
The Adobe help website is the official website
for help with all Adobe products. This is the website
I will use if I need to troubleshoot any problems that
occur, the website identifies many problems and
lists a fix under neath it. The website shows how a
website inside of Muse can be uploaded to Business
Catalyst and viewed on a browser as a working
site. Since there are many functions in the adobe
products, it is essential that you know shortcuts in
order to save time in producing your project. On
this official adobe help website they list out all the
shortcuts for every single adobe product.
School of motion
School Of Motion is an external company to
Adobe and provides tools, courses and tutorials
for Adobe After Effects. The tools and presets they
provide assists designers in creating their projects
with ease and speed up the production process.
Their widgets are made using their own code which
creates new functions and buttons inside of After
effects making it easy for the user to perform effects
to create a smoother and better motion. They also
have several courses on their page involve several
step by step tutorials which allow to user to master
motion inside of After Effects.
.PNG
A PNG is a Portable Network Graphic which is
a bitmap image where the quality depends on the
amount of pixels on the screen. I will use PNG files
for my content in my portfolio and content in the
website. A PNG is optimal for this, rather than a
JPEG file because a PNG has lossless compression
where a JPEG has lossy compression. This means
the images can be resized in the portfolio and
website without losing quality. PNG files are an
open format with no copyright limitations meaning
they can be used by any content creator.
.mov
.MOV is the file type I used for all my rendered
parts of my film. The MOV file is a common
multimedia file format which is commonly played
through Apple’s QuickTime Player. This file type
is useful because it can be played through multiple
versions of Apple and Microsoft devices. When I
render my film I will choose to use the H.264 video
codec which compresses the film into a .MOV file
with a lower file size than many other video codecs.
It commonly uses the MP4 codec for compression
and remains lossless, not loosing any quality.
.ttf
A TTF file is a True Type Font which is a file
extension used by Apple. I will use the file type for
downloading all fonts used in the film, portfolio
and website. A TTF is a raster font meaning it can
be scaled to any size without losing any pixels
or quality. Fonts can be created in Apple and
Microsoft operating systems such as CorelDraw
and OpenOffice which allow this file extension.
.JpEG
A JPEG file is the most common format for
images on the internet. JPEG stands for Joint
Photographic Experts Group which is a group that
created the JPEG compression standard. A JPEG is
a type of image commonly found on the internet.
The term JPEG refers to a type of compression that
makes image files have less file size than the RAW
files that are taken by high-end DSLR’s. A JPEG
may not be useful if the image needs to be resized,
because it has lossy compression meaning when it
is rescaled it loses pixels, decreasing the quality of
the image.
.HTML
A HTML file stands for HyperText Markup
Language which is a file format used as a basis of a
web page. A HTML can be used to create headings,
paragraphs, lists, links, quotes, and interactive
forms which can all be displayed on the site. I will
use this file type for my website accompanied by a
.CSS which defines the colours, style, look etc. The
HTML file will allow me to preview my work onto
a live browser so I can see what the final product
will be like on the web. Code can be added to the
HTML to create these elements of the website and
be adjusted by linking the code to the CSS file.
.CSS
A CSS file is a Cascade Style Sheet used to assist
the HTML file and format what has been coded. A
CSS is used to change the display of the website to
format all the content such as text, images and video
inside the website. I will use a CSS file to make sure
my video is centered in the screen no matter how
much the browser’s size is changed. I will also use
this to change the colour of the menu to match the
colour scheme in the website. I will use it to add
stroke around objects with the same colour scheme
to put emphasis on the images/video.
.Tiff
A TIFF file is a Tagged Image File Format that
is used for saving high quality raster graphics. The
format supports lossless compression so that users
can archive their photos to save disk space without
losing any initial quality. GeoTIFF Image files also
use the TIFF file format. These are images as well
but they store GPS coordinates as metadata along
with the file, using the extensible features of the
TIFF format.
Vanguard tripod
I will use a tripod for some still shots in order
to have no movement. With this tripod I make sure
the camera is balanced so the shot can be parallel
to the ground. I can adjust the tripod so that I can
see everything in the frame before I begin to shoot/
record. This tripod is very lightweight making it
easy to carry around and set up each new frame.
There is 3 adjustable latches on each arm making it
easy adjust height if the camera isn’t balanced
Gopro hero 5
The GoPro Hero 5 will be used to capture footage
underwater. This GoPro specifically can record at
1080p while having a frame rate of 120 fps. which
can be slowed down by 25%, meaning even if the
footage is shaky it can be slowed down and will
look smooth in the final product. This GoPro has an
optimal 1 hour battery life giving me lots of time to
get the right shots underwater and capture enough
footage.
s40 steadicam
The S40 steadicam is a well known hand held
steadicam that uses weights to stabilize a dslr. Using
a steadicam eliminates a significant amount of hand
held movement but it can still be seen as the weights
aren’t always perfect. This product can easily be
used for the Canon 80D which is the camera i will
be using. The downside of a this steadicam is that
it takes time to setup the camera making sure the
weights balance it and keep it in the center. The
advantage is that it is fairly affordable and easy to
carry and move around.
DJI RONIN
The DJI Ronin is a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer
which allows the user to move it freely without
effecting the shot of the camera allowing for the
smoothest possible footage. The gimbal can be used
for panning shots, tracking shots, running shots,
rotating shots and more. The advantage of this
product is that it gives you the smoothest possible
footage you can get, being extremely useful for
cinematography. The disadvantage of this product
is the cost being at $1599 and the time it takes to set
up and pack up is long.
Softbox lighting
Softbox lighting are cheap, portable, battery
powered lighting for cinematography that give
an extra amount of light when needed. If the
environment is dark and the subject isn’t easily
visible then a softbox can be used project at the
subject from behind the camera to create artificial
light that is needed to make the subject stand out.
This product is successful because it is relatively
cheap and east to use.
Imovie
iMovie is a basic editing software for films. It has
limited transitions and effects that can be used on
layers. Most processes inside iMovie are automatic
allowing the user to select different presets to match
their project. For my project I probably won’t use
this software as I require a more advanced software
like Adobe After Effects to create effects rather than
select preset effects in iMovie.
This Intro was made to showcase a unique effect of placing video inside of text. This is achieved by
creating a text layer and video on top of the layer and setting the mode to ‘Alpha’. This allows the video to
be displayed inside the text layer.
This effect of text behind people presents to the viewer that the text must be on the wall behind. However
the text is on top of the video and I have created masks to where the people walk in front of the text.
Before After
For this footage, I used a teal and orange colour Look-Up-Table (LUT) to colour correct and grade to a
more cinematic feel and vibe. I also added black bars to the top and bottom to give it a cinematic feel.
This was my main prototype I was focusing on for October-November of 2017. This 34 second video
displays kinetic typography based off audio from a speech from Frank Sinatra talking about how he would
like to be remembered. For the layout of the text, I first sketched the design matching the grid I had on After
Effects. The grid allowed me to keep my text and images centered and consistently positioned. For the white
line drawing effect around the text, I drew frame by frame drawings, where each frame I would draw 1cm
more than the last frame. This prototype may appear in the final project because the message is around ‘the
Path Taken’ and it showcases knowledge of the typography media and After Effects skills. For the final
product, I will have a typography element like this prototype at the start of the film to introduce the topic,
then in the slow part of the song I will have another section of typography that is centered around the topic.
The audio would preferably be from a speech because it needs to be motivational and inspire the audience.
I chose to not include the hyper lapse in the final film. This was because there wasn’t enough footage
filmed at the location so having this clip would look random and out of place. Although it would have
showcased the skill and technique of a hyper lapse, it didn’t fit the flow of the film and therefore wasn’t
included. The initial idea was to combine this hyper lapse with various other hyper lapses to create
motion and a panning transition than would continue in the same direction. However, I felt that it wasn’t
worth doing any other hyper lapses because they needed to have a significant purpose to be in the film as
the location has to be established by other shots.
I noticed towards the end of the major project time period i spent more time on my portfolio and website.
I realised that the website would take a significant amount of time to design and develop as it was my first
time using Adobe Muse to develop a website. I also ended up spending more time in term 1 researching
as I found new tools inside different software’s that i felt would be useful for my major project.
25.10.17
On the 25th of November I started working on a kinetic typography prototype that either be
practice or end up in the final project. There were three steps I had to do in order to produce this
typography; creating text and matching it to the audio layer, changing the tracking, kerning and
leading of the text to match the desired design layout and making a frame-by-frame drawing
animation that creates a box outlining my text.
28.11.17
On the 28th of November I started to research kinetic typography.
I was looking for examples that had effective use of design layouts
and transitions. The example I found was a lyric video of Eminem’s
‘Rap God’. This videos shows advanced motion graphics with over
1000 text layers in the song. The creator makes use of shaping the
text in a way that represents the next word. This also uses transitions
from all directions and using 3D text to create an effect for the
viewer.
5.11.17
On the 5th of November I conducted numerous research into
colour grading in cinematic style films. From the research I
found that you can apply Look Up Tables (LUTs) to your
footage according to what style you desire. A common
LUT to use is the teal and orange colour correction. This
is popular in the industry because teal highlights water and
the orange/brown colour enhances the skin colour to look
more cinematic. However for my film I will be manually
colour correcting my footage instead of using LUTs because
each clip I take will need manipulation of contrast, exposure,
temperature and saturation.
25.11.17
On the 25th of November I made a hyper-lapse of a significant building closely located. This
involved over 80 photos from different locations sequenced together to create a movement effect.
The majority of this was done in production however there are vital post-production steps needed
for a successful hyper-lapse. A feature that I added in post-production was colour grading to
make it look cinematic by increasing the temperature and saturation. Furthermore, I used a Warp
Stabilizer VFX in After Effects to make sure I had stabilized movements throughout the sequence
of the shots.
15.12.17
On the 15th of December, I started brainstorming logo designs to create a brand for my project.
My initial thought was to use my initials in the logo to represent myself as a brand and the media
I create. The software I chose to use was Photoshop as I am more
familiar with the program and I can create vector graphics in the
software. My logo developed over time as I thought the logo was
too simple and plain, so I decided to add a wave inside the logo to
represent the flow of my brand. Later, I thought this design was too
over the top and went back to the original design of my initials in a
dark blue colour connecting the T with the H to make the design flow.
I also chose to write media at the bottom with a drop shadow to give
a 3D effect to the logo.
22.12.17
On the 22nd of December I started to film at the location of North Head. The equipment I used on
the day was a Canon 80D, DJI Ronin stabilizer, tripod, GoPro and a drone. I took numerous shots of
my subject with the gimbal, consisting of panning, tracking and rotating shots. I used the GoPro to
take shots for my record of production and to take a time lapse of the headland. For one of the shots,
I followed the subject walking behind him then panned out revealing the view. In post changed the
colour grading to a summer vibe with deep blues and an orange skin colour, this was used to match
the rest of the film with a warm, summer vibe.
10.2.18
On the 10th of February, I started the second component of Kinetic Typography which involves
a similar message about a ‘path taken’. I chose to use After effects for this section, because it has
the certain animation tools to create effective and smooth typography. For this section I used
several icons to display what was being said, so that the audience will not have to read everything
and they will become more connected with the design of the typography.
27.3.18
On the 27th of March, I started making improvements to the second component of the
typography. One of the changes I made was adding a stroke and drop shadow to each layer of text
to give it depth and more meaning. The stroke is a black outline of the text which puts emphasis
on the words rather than just plain white text. The drop shadow is an effect that gives it a 3D effect
as it casts a small shadow behind each character. For words that stood out I used a 4-colour
gradient, to give it even more emphasis and make it salient to the viewer. For example this was
used for the words ‘Supreme Destiny’ seen in the image below.
5.5.18
On the 5th of April, I continued working on the typography. I grouped multiple text layers to a
null object and changed it’s position, scale and rotation. This allowed the text that was on screen
to smoothly exit the scene by grouping with other text layers and leave the frame by changing the
position. I also noticed that the sequence of text was shaped like an E so I tried to incorporate it
into the next sequence of words where i could replace the E in a word with the typography design
in the previous scene. This attracts the viewer’s attention as they follow the design which flows
into the next sentence which gives a smooth animation with consistency.
30.5.18
On the 30th of May I started researching websites to get inspiration for a website design. I
wanted to have a 4 page website including the home page, film, portfolio and contact page. I started
to look on the website Awwwards which is a website that showcases the best websites based on
design, usability, creativity and content. They feature websites that have user interactivity such as
parallax scrolling and rollover mouse effects which give the user an experience on the website.
These sites gave me an insight into what I could be using in Adobe Muse to create interactivity
and user experience.
3.6.18
On the 3rd of June, I finalised my last component of the film, being the second part of the
kinetic typography. I noticed that one of the sentences had the same start to being “Get in the
wrong marriage, in the wrong relationship”. So for this I used the ‘decoder fade in’ text animation
so that it looks like the word marriage gets scrambled into letters that form the word relationship.
For the final frame the sentence was “But it’s all leading to the same path”, I chose to shape the
text to form a path someone is on to give it a kinetic effect. I also added a 4-colour gradient to the
word ‘Path’ to give it emphasis as it is the main concept of the film.
18.6.18
On the 18th of June, I began creating my website in Adobe Muse. I decided to have the title and
menu on the home page in the top left corner. Each page of the menu I added a hyper-link which
takes the user to that page. On the home screen I have a slide-show of images taken throughout
the period of the major work, showcasing some of the locations I filmed in. The slide-show is
automatic and play switches photos every 3.5 seconds. This is an effective way of showcasing
images to the user without them having the switch through each image on the website.
1.7.18
On the 1st of July I finished tweaking the film and started my first render. I chose to use the
H.264 video codec which uses an MP4 compression and converts the composition into a .mov
file which can be viewed on both Microsoft and Apple devices. The render was set at 1080p
resolution at a frame rate of 30 fps. The video had a bit depth of 16 which is the max bit depth the
human eye can see. The total file size after the first render was 2.1 GB which is too large to upload
to my website so I had to compress the file using the software, Handbrake. This software is able
compress the file to a lower file size without loosing any initial quality.
16.7.18
On the 16th of July I encountered an error saying that my InDesign file had been damaged
with an ‘error code: 4”. To solve this I had to spend numerous hours troubleshooting to get the file
back. I did some research and found that the reason it corrupted is because I had low disk space
on my macbook laptop. This error was solved by restarting the application and holding Command
> Option > Control > Shift which restores lost or damaged files, but all the elements have to be
copied into a new document and saved under a different name for the file to be working again.
This process took a substantial amount of time that was meant to be allocated to my website. But
thankfully, all files and content were restored without losing any work.
28.7.18
On the 28th of July, I finalised my film and did a final render using the software Handbrake.
This is a compression software that decreased the file size while maintaining the same quality,
frame rate and bit depth. Using the software Handbrake i was able to convert a 2.1 GB .mov file
to a 67.9 MB .mp4 file without losing any resolution or frame rate. This software uses a H.264
video codec which compresses files into an MP4.
Item Selection/justification
Adobe After Effects CC 2017 was the software I chose to use for
making the Kinetic Typography. I used this software as the school
provided it for free and is the industry standard software for special
effects. After Effects is good for kinetic typography because you are
able to animate text easily in the time-line by using key-frames.
Adobe Premier Pro CC 2017 was the software I selected for sequencing
and editing all my footage into the final film. I chose Premier Pro
because it is the industry standard for video editing and provided by
the school for free. I chose this software as opposed to Final Cut
Pro because it offers more editing features such as transitions, colour
grading and time distortion.
Adobe InDesign CC 2017 was the software I chose for the management
portfolio and the poster graphic designs. I chose to use this software
because it offers advanced design features that allow users to create
graphics with a range of tools provided. This was also an effective
software to use because it was free to use compared to other software
as it was provided by the school.
Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 was the software I chose to use for photo
editing and manipulation. It is an effective software because it is
the industry standard for photo editing and the school provided the
software free to use. I will use this software for the images in my
website and for the creation of the logo.
Item Selection/justification
The main camera I selected for this project is the Canon 80D. This
is an effective camera for video as it shoots as full HD with 60fps,
Canon 80D this allows for slow motion footage. Slow motion footage allows
more stability in the shot and adding to the cinematic style. I also
selected this camera because it is part of the school’s equipment so I
can minimise my costs.
The camera I chose for taking pictures, hyper-lapses and time-lapses is
the Canon 70D. This camera is better for those types of shots because
Canon 70D
it doesn’t have the same fps capabilities as the 80D with only 30fps
at full HD. This is an effective camera that provides low costs for my
project, but will still be effective for creating these camera shots for
my film.
I selected the DJI-ronin as a piece of equipment that will be the source
of stabilisation for my film. This 3-axis gimbal allows for little to no
DJI - Ronin hand movement to be seen in the footage. DJI is a trusted brand as
they are well known for drone stabilisation and various equipment to
stabilize footage. This piece of equipment was also effective to use
as the school has it for free to use for the period of the major work.
I chose a tripod to use for my time-lapses, hyper-lapses and some part
of my video. This allowed for me to always make sure my camera
Tripod was level and still before taking the shot. Using the tripod allows no
camera movement which effective for time-lapses and attracts the
viewer.
Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the process of designing or
arranging a work place, product or system, to
