* Mission Statement and History 826michigan inspires school­aged students to write confidently and skillfully with the help of
adult volunteers in their communities. Our writing and tutoring programs uphold a culture of
creativity and imagination and support students in establishing strong habits of mind. Through
publication and community engagement, we provide students with an authentic and enthusiastic
audience for their writing.

Our programs provide an energizing creative outlet for students and meaningful volunteer
opportunities for community members. We believe that with one­on­one attention from
caring adults, students improve their academic performance, develop a sense of
belonging, and discover the unique value of their voices.

With this understanding in mind, we provide drop­in tutoring, field trips, after­school
workshops, in­schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with
student publications.

Last year alone, our nine staffers and 500+ active volunteers served 3,000+ school­aged
students during more than 23,000 hours of contact time across our programs in Ann
Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit. All of those numbers add up to something else: Free. We
offer all of our student programs at no cost to students, their families, teachers, or schools.

826michigan is based on the highly successful model of San Francisco’s 826 Valencia,
which was founded in 2002 by renowned novelist Dave Eggers and educator Ninive
Calegari and has since grown to seven cities. Like 826 Valencia, 826michigan’s
headquarters consists of a colorful, comfortable tutoring center and a quirky retail
storefront ­­ Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair ­­ that partially funds our programs.

In the past ten years, 826michigan has grown from a tiny startup into a stable nonprofit
with a staff of eight, an ever­growing service area, a strong base of individual and
corporate donors, and a volunteer corps of 500 and counting.

* Project/Program Purpose 826michigan’s Drop­in Tutoring and Writing Tables Program organizes trained volunteer tutors to
provide valuable support and individualized attention to hundreds of Washtenaw County
students each school year. Four days per week—every week—students ages 8­18 convene in
our tutoring labs on Liberty Street in Ann Arbor and on Washington Street in Ypsilanti to work on
homework across all subjects and creative writing projects.

826michigan is able to provide an essential educational service free to students and
families who otherwise couldn’t afford the kind of sustained, dedicated academic support
that is critical to students’ success. For an entire school year, caring adult volunteers work
one­on­one with youth in all subjects. One­on­one connections between students and
mentors have a significant effect on students’ engagement in their own education. When
an adult mentor cares about a student and their success, the student begins to care about
these things too. 826michigan facilitates these important one­on­one connections and
provides all students with a safe, warm, and welcoming place to go after school and work
on their homework.

Expand after­school tutoring: Currently, the program is overseen by two interns and two
staff members (one of each per site). We anticipate student numbers to reach 200+ this
school year. Hiring a dedicated program assistant would ensure we maintain quality as the
program grows.

Recruit, schedule, train, and oversee volunteers: 826michigan’s trained adult volunteers
 are our greatest resource. We want to increase our recruitment and training efforts to
attract more dedicated members of the community to serve our students.

Outreach: All 826michigan programs are free and open to all students, but we make a
special effort to target low­income students who would not otherwise have access to the
one­on­one attention and support that 826michigan provides. We seek to increase our
outreach to students most in need.

* What is the need that this program/project Every 826michigan program is offered at no cost and targeted toward under­resourced public
addresses? school students, English Language Learners, students with special needs, and other vulnerable
populations who benefit from a no­cost arts enrichment opportunity. In our partner schools,
student populations range from 56% to 87% receiving reduced or free lunches. The need is only
growing. At the state level, Michigan faces a $400 million dollar education fund deficit, forcing
cuts of $430 per student in schools already scrabbling to make ends meet. The Ypsilanti School
District closed multiple schools in the 2010­2011 school year, leading to layoffs of dozens of
teachers and staff and disrupting students’ sense of continuity and safety in their education. Ann
Arbor Public Schools has also been forced to make widespread layoffs of teachers and support
staff along with school closings, leading to a consistent environment of uncertainty in the
schools.

826michigan understands that 1­on­1 attention is critical for students and is ever more
rare as households face economic difficulties, teacher­to­student ratios decline, the
pressure for students to perform academically increases. We bring our project­based
approach reflects the 826 National Theory of Change: given a safe, supportive, creative
third­space, students show academic improvements and develop habits of mind that
positively impact their learning, self­confidence, and expression. Our caring, trained adult
volunteers are dedicated to helping students and families where they need it most: in safe
welcoming spaces during those hours between school and home.

826michigan students agree that our programs provide essential resources: ”They
changed my writing skills. They cheered me on when I thought I couldn't do it” said
student Kasim Brown. Another student, Terrance Gardette, shared “The most memorable
moment for me was when they commented on my work. It made me feel good and like I
could do anything.” 

* How does this program impact the 826michigan teaches students that they have a voice—and that their community hears them.
community that you are in? Our 10­year history has clearly demonstrated that 826michigan’s impact on young people is
long­lasting and important; we also make a difference in the lives of our volunteers and the
community at large. Giving adults the opportunity to work with students on their writing, and
experience their challenges, is a key step in community collaboration.

Most importantly, our students benefit immeasurably when they see adult members of
their own community sitting at the writing table, ready to read what they write. It’s a sweet
surprise and so motivating for 826michigan students to learn that their dedicated weekly
tutor is not being paid to play that role and is in fact also a business owner, an author, an
attorney, or an engineer. We know this attention make a difference. Each year, we survey
our students’ parents to see what sort of difference we’re making. One writes: “826 has
inspired my child to write A LOT! He has struggled with school for many years. The
positive, accepting attitude of 826 volunteers has been so beneficial for a child who is not
social or successful in school."

The 826michigan Drop­in Tutoring Program balances flexibility with stability by ensuring
that the students served will receive consistent attention from tutors on teacher­assigned
projects. This allows 826michigan to serve students in a manner that is as diverse as their
needs. Program evaluation confirms that 826michigan successfully helps students
become better writers; supports greater engagement in academic work; provides valuable
homework assistance and supports student gains in homework completion; helps
students become more confident in their schoolwork; helps students persevere and
believe in their ability to achieve their goals; inspires more creative thinkers; encourages
and helps students share their stories; programs helps students learn to ask for help; and
fosters community collaboration. 

* Use of Funds Explanation A grant from the Build­A­Bear Workshop Foundation will help underwrite program costs. These
 expenses include student supplies including pencils, paper, laptop computers, art supplies,
healthy snacks; program management and evaluation; and printing costs to produce chapbooks
of the students' writing projects.

The program budget also includes volunteer recruitment and training expenses. Because
826michigan volunteers are so crucial to our work, we focus significant effort on outreach
and recruitment, training, engagement and recognition. With a priority on reaching a
diverse pool, volunteers go through broad and program­specific training on our unique
approach, how to coach students in their writing, and more. Ongoing appreciation
activities let tutors know how much we value their work and the impact they have.  

* How will you measure or quantify the 826michigan’s programs are continuously reviewed and adjusted based on the data and
success of this funding? anecdotes we collect each year in pre­ and post­program surveys from students, teachers and
parents. 826michigan also works closely with 826 National to develop and implement our
methods of evaluation, developed by a PhD certified youth development outcomes expert.
Because we continually strive to do better, we’re always looking for ways to improve and grow.
We use a number of evaluation strategies to ensure that we’re on track and to help us see
where, and how, we can do better. These include:

Program goals: Every year, 826michigan staff develops program goals for the year, and in
addition to weekly staff meetings and regular check­ins, the program staff meets every
three months to ensure we’re meeting them.

The numbers: We track every interaction we have with every student and every volunteer,
so we know exactly how many volunteers are serving how many students, for how many
hours.

Participant evaluations: At the end of every 826 program, participants fill out an evaluation
form to let us know what worked and what can work better. We look at this feedback
regularly and use it to help us plan and improve future programming.

Last year, 89% of our After­School Drop­In Tutoring and Writing Tables Program students
told us that they liked working with 826michigan tutors, and they feel confident about
finishing their homework. 75% of students shared that 826michigan helped them improve
grades at school, and 78% told us they were proud of their writing. Parents also
recognized positive results in their students: 87% of parents told us their their child is
more confident about doing schoolwork with the help of 826michigan tutors; 82% of
parents also shared that by finishing homework with help from 826michigan tutors, it
allows their child to spend more quality time with their family.
