FAQ: CCNP V6.0
Frequently Asked Questions: CCNP Version 6.0

Q. Which courses are part of the new Cisco CCNP® v6.0 curriculum?

A. The Networking Academy CCNP v6.0 curriculum that aligns with the new Cisco®
certification exams consists of three new courses:
● CCNP: Implementing Cisco IP Routing (ROUTE), which replaces Building Scalable
Cisco Internetworks (BSCI), is scheduled for release in March 2010
● CCNP: Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks (SWITCH), which replaces
Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN), is scheduled for release in
March 2010
● CCNP: Troubleshooting and Maintaining Cisco IP Networks (TSHOOT) is scheduled
for release in April 2010

These three new courses will replace the current four CCNP v5.0 courses. Please note
that two of the v5.0 courses, Implementing Secure Cisco Wide Area Networks
(ISCW) and Optimizing Converged Cisco Networks (ONT), do not have a direct
replacement. The content of these courses has either been incorporated into the
three new courses, or dropped from the CCNP curriculum.

Q. When will be the current CCNP 5.0 courses be retired?

A. To facilitate a smooth transition, the CCNP 5.0 curriculum will be available for one
year after the release of the new courses. However, all academies are encouraged to
migrate to CCNP 6.0 as soon as possible to take advantage of the new curriculum.
The end of availability dates are March 2011 for ISCW and ONT, and June 2011 for
BSCI and BCMSN.

Q. Until when will Networking Academy students be able to take the current
CCNP certification exams?
A. The four current CCNP certification exams will be available to the general public
through July 31, 2010 and to Networking Academy students using a special
voucher through July 31, 2011. More information about how to obtain a special,
non-discount voucher to enable students to continue to take the retiring exams will
be communicated as soon as it is available.

After July 31, 2011, all Networking Academy candidates for CCNP will need to pass
the Troubleshoot (TSHOOT) certification exam. Passing scores on the BSCI and
BCMSN exams will continue to be accepted as satisfying CCNP certification
requirements, even though the exams will no longer be available. Networking
Academy exam candidates can mix and match CCNP exam requirements to achieve
CCNP certification as shown in the following table:
Q. What are the numbers and acronyms of the existing and the new CCNP
certification exams?
A. The exams are listed below, new exams appear in bold type:

Q. How is the new Cisco CCNP® curriculum structured?

A. The new CCNP v6.0 curriculum comprises three semester long, 70-hour courses
that align with the three new CCNP certification exams: CCNP ROUTE, CCNP
SWITCH, and CCNP TSHOOT. Course components include hands-on lab activities,
case studies, chapter quizzes, a final exam, and a skills based assessment. Unlike
other Cisco Networking Academy® courses, the CCNP courses will not have the
traditional GUI-based curriculum. It is replaced by a Cisco Press textbook.

Q: Now that the revised CCNP has been announced, can I still take the
previous CCNP exams? How long will they be valid?
A: The last day for candidates to take the BSCI, BCMSN, ISCW, and ONT exams will
be July 31, 2010. Candidates who pass the BSCI and BCMSN exams will be able to
apply those exams toward CCNP certification as long as their score is valid—within
three years from the date of the exam. Please note that no direct replacements are
being developed for the ISCW and ONT exams, and passing scores on these exams
will be accepted only until July 31, 2010. Candidates for CCNP who do not complete
all of their certification by July 31, 2010 will be required to pass the TSHOOT exam
#642-832 to meet the requirements for certification.

Q: What if I have completed one or more of the previous CCNP exams? Can I
still count those exams toward my certification?
A. The table below lists all of the valid ways to become certified. Note the expiration
date of the options using ISCW and ONT. Candidates who are in the process of
obtaining their CCNP, and who wish to certify before the new TSHOOT exam
becomes required, must pass all of the required exams on or before July 31, 2010.
After July 31, 2010, all CCNP candidates will be required to pass the TSHOOT exam.

Information on the mix-and-match options for Cisco CCDP® and Cisco CCIP® are
also included, as they require routing and switching skills, as well.

Q. The CCIP certification requires the BSCI exam. The CCDP certification
requires the BSCI and BCMSN exams. Will these exams still be available for
CCIP and CCDP candidates?
A. No, the BSCI and BCMSN exams will be retired and replaced with the ROUTE and
SWITCH exams, respectively, in all related Cisco certifications. Students who are
working toward their CCIP or CCDP certifications should refer to the mix-and-match
tables above for further information.

Q. Is there a specific order that the exams need to be taken for the new
CCNP?
A. The exams may be taken in any order, but the recommended order for the
courses is to take ROUTE and SWITCH before the TSHOOT course, which
incorporates the knowledge from ROUTE and SWITCH into the lab scenarios that are
used for course work.

Q: What is being changed in the routing exam and course?

A: The CCNP routing course (Implementing Cisco IP Routing) and 642-9032 ROUTE
exam now cover these additional topics:

* Configuring EIGRP across HDLC, Frame Relay, MPLS, VPN, and MPLS virtual circuits
* Configuring OSPF over HDLC, Frame Relay, PPT, and over different WAN links
* Implementing alternate routing path control
* Implementing IPv
* Analyzing branch office network designs and planning installation
* Analyzing designs to support mobile workers and planning network modifications.

Q: What is being changed in the switching exam and course?

A: The CCNP switching course (Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks) and 642-
813 SWITCH exam now cover these additional topics:

* Implementing Per VLAN Spanning Tree (PVST) and 802.1W Rapid Spanning Tree
Protocol
* Implementing network monitoring in a highly available network
* Integrating the latest WLAN devices into the campus infrastructure

Q: What happens if I have already passed some of the current CCNP

requirements? Which of the new exams do I need to take?
A: You will have until July 31, 2010 to complete the current series of CCNP exams to
achieve certification. As of August 1, 2010, the BSCI, BCMSN, ISCW, and ONT exams
will be retired. Note that no replacements are being developed for the ISCW and ONT
exams. Because of the similarity of topics, candidates who have a valid passing score
on BSCI will not be required to take the ROUTE exam, and those who have a valid
passing score on BCMSN will not be required to take the SWITCH exam. However,
candidates who have not passed the ISCW and ONT exams by July 31, 2010 will
need to pass the TSHOOT exam to achieve CCNP certification. Please refer to the
online table for your specific situation located on the CCNP home page off Cisco.com.

Q: I have passed only the ISCW or ONT exam, not both. Should I try to take
the other exam before July 31, 2010? *OR* I have taken the ISCW (or ONT)
course, but not the exam. Should I try to take the exam before July 31,
2010?
A: If you can pass both the ISCW and ONT exams by July 31, 2010, before they are
retired, you will not have to take the TSHOOT exam to achieve certification. If, on
the other hand, you do not think that you have a good chance of passing both exams
before July 31, 2010, then you should focus your time on preparing for the TSHOOT
exam, as you will not have an opportunity to retake ISCW or ONT after July 31,
2010. Do not waste your time and money trying to pass just one of the exams,
because one is not enough to waive the requirement to pass TSHOOT beyond July
31, 2010.

Q. Why is the online curriculum being replaced by a book?

A. Networking Academy wanted the CCNP curriculum update to coincide with the
release of the new certification exams to help ensure that the curriculum is relevant
to the needs of students and academies. To optimize development time and
resources, we decided to replace the resource- and time-intensive development of
online course content with textbooks. This decision allowed us to focus on the
development of other course components that are highly valued by the Networking
Academy CCNP community.

Q. How will Networking Academy guarantee the alignment of the textbooks

with other course components?
A. All course components, including the books, are part of an instructional design
that guarantees their consistency and alignment. We are working in close
collaboration with Cisco Press to help ensure that the study guides traditionally
published by Cisco Press align with the Networking Academy CCNP courses.

Q. Will the books be available in electronic forms.

A. Yes, Cisco Press will make all books available in electronic format.

Q. What are the prerequisites for the new CCNP 6.0 couses?
A. Please refer to the following table. Please note that although no prerequisites are
indicated for CCNP Switch, all CCNP courses presume knowledge at the Cisco CCNA®
routing and switching level.

Q. What type of instructor training will be required to teach the new CCNP
6.0 curriculum?
A. The following table summarizes the training requirements for CCNP. All instructors
will need to complete instructor training to teach CCNP Troubleshoot, regardless of
their current training status. Instructors who are currently certified to teach both
CCNP: BSCI and CCNP: BCMSN will not require any additional training to teach the
CCNP Route and CCNP Switch courses.

Q. Who will offer instructor training?

A. Instructor training will be offered by CCNP CATCs and regional academies (where
applicable). Please check with your support academy for the availability of instructor
training classes.

Q. Will instructor training be offered remotely?

A. CATCs and regional academies are strongly encouraged to offer Blended Distance
Learning options for CCNP instructor training. A list of options will be published when
available.

Q. What equipment bundles will be required to teach the new CCNP

curriculum.
A. Lab equipment topologies are detailed in the CCNP v6.0 Scope and Sequence.
Academies should be able to use most of their current equipment.

Q. Will NETLAB support the new CCNP lab activities.

A. Yes. All lab activities are being designed to be remote enabled using NDG’s
NETLAB.

CCIE-Routing and Switching

Written Exam - #350-001, v4.0

Cost: US$350

Duration: 120 minutes (Up to 150 minutes for non-English countries)

Questions: 90-110 questions
Available Languages: English
CCIE Prerequisites: There is no prerequisites for CCIE
Register: Pearson VUE

Cisco has revised the certification requirements for CCIE R&S and published the new
v4.0 standards on the Cisco Learning Network. Exams based on the new
requirements are now available and immediately replace the current exams.

Effective October 19, 2009 Cisco CCIE® Routing and Switching v4.0 certification
exams are available in all testing locations worldwide. Both the written and lab
exams have been refreshed with new questions covering MPLS and VPN networking.
The written exam includes new scenario-based questions. The lab exam now requires
hands-on troubleshooting of preconfigured networks, in addition to configuration.

The CCIE R&S written exam is a two-hour qualification exam with 90-110 questions
taken online at a Cisco authorized Pearson VUE testing center. The questions are a
combination of multiple choice and more complex, interactive items that assess
technical knowledge on topics such as IP, IP routing, bridging and switch-related
technologies, and some equipment commands.

Requirements for Certification

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification. Other professional
certifications or training courses are not required. Instead, candidates must first pass
a written qualification exam and then the corresponding hands-on lab exam.

Update to the CCIE Written Exam Format and Scoring

Effective February 17, 2009, candidates taking CCIE written exams will no longer be
allowed to skip a question and come back to it at a later time. In addition, the overall
exam score will now be reported on a scale from 300-1000.

Cost
Written exams are administered by independent vendors at cost of US$350. Costs
may vary due to exchange rates and local taxes (VAT, GST).

Expiration
Candidates must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18 months of
passing the CCIE written exam. Valid passing scores on written exams expire after
18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions:-

Q: What exactly is being changed on the CCIE R&S written exam?

A: The CCIE R&S v4.0 written exam will be refreshed with new questions to reflect
the current job role expectations of employers. Scenario-based questions will be
added to the multiple choice questions. New topics include the skills associated with
planning and evaluating network changes, implementing MPLS, Layer 3 VPN, IPv6,
EIGRP and multicast; and configuring performance-based routing. More information
is available on the CCIE Written Exam Overview page.

Q: Now that the CCIE R&S v4.0 has been announced, can I still take the
CCIE R&S v3.0 exam? How long will it be valid?
A: The CCIE R&S v3.0 written exam will be available through October 17, 2009, at
all Pearson VUE testing centers. Passing the v3.0 written exam qualifies a candidate
to take any available version of the CCIE R&S lab exam. As with all CCIE written
exams, a passing score on v3.0 written exam will remain valid for three years, as
long as the candidate attempts the lab exam once within the first 18 months. If the
lab is not attempted, the written exam becomes invalid and the candidate will have
to retest using whatever written exam is available at that time.

Q: Will there be any changes to the recently-added Core Knowledge portion

of the exam, the part with the short-answer questions?
A: The questions in the Core Knowledge section of the lab exam may cover any area
on the CCIE R&S v4.0 Lab Exam topics.

Q: Which exam will be used for recertification?

A: As of October 18, 2009, CCIEs who take the CCIE R&S written exam for
recertification will be given the v4.0 exam and should prepare using the exam topics
found on the Cisco Learning Network.

Q: Are the previous Cisco 360 components applicable to the CCIE R&S v4.0
exams? Should candidates studying for CCIE R&S v4.0 exams wait for the
new Cisco 360 materials to begin work?
A: The learning components available at first launch of Cisco 360 are still relevant to
candidates studying for the CCIE R&S v4.0 certification exams. No Cisco 360
Learning Program components are being retired. There is no need for candidates to
wait for revised Cisco 360 material to begin their study and practice. The
subscription model ensures that Cisco 360 customers can take advantage of all new
content as it is released and do not need to wait.
