2. CALCULATION OF MAGNIFICATION FACTOR

As per TR-7 (Magnification Factor is based on mean hourly wind speed)

Calculate k1, k2, k3 & k4 factors as per IS 875 ( Part-III) - 2015
k1- Is the factor which depends on design life of structure & wind speed. Here, we
design for a life of 25 years and wind speed of 44m/sec. Hence, as per IS 875,
table 1, k1 = 0.91
k2- Is the factor which depends on Terrain category & Structure height. Here, we consider
terrain category to be 2.
Hence, using table 33 of IS 875, at a height of 10m, k2 = 0.73
Note: 10m is considered as per clause 2.6.4.3 of TR7
k3- Is the factor which depends on the Topography of the ground, here we generally
assume the upwind slope is less than or equal to 3 deg. Hence k3 defaults to 1
k4- Is the Importance Factor for Cyclonic Region, Here K4 defaults to 1
Thus, mean hourly wind speed (V10) = Vb x k1 x k2 x k3 x k4

Mean hourly wind speed (V10) = 29.23 m /s

no = 0.016
V10

Assume log decrement = 0.2

(Assumed B line in figure 1, TR7)

Response factor () = 1.35

(As per B line in figure 1 of TR7)

Size reduction factor () = 1 - 0.006 x (mast ht - 3)

Clause 2.6, TR7 = 0.886

Magnification factor = x = 1.20

Sample calculation for Joint 9

1) Calculation of Plastic modulus = 4 x 114.74^2 x 5 /1000

4 x R2 x t = 263.30
3
cm
Where, R is Mean radius (D-t)/2 = 114.74 mm
t is thickness of mast at the joint = 5.00 mm
D is Diameter of mast at the joint = 234 mm

2) Calculation of Plastic moment of Resistance 355 x 263.3 x 10^3 / 10^6

Mp = Yield stress x Plastic modulus 93.47 KN.m

3) Calculation of Constant for M* Refer Clause 2.4 of TR7

Constant should not be greater than 1

If D/t ≤ NE/180σy
Constant for M* = 1.00

Else, If NE/180σy < D/t ≤ 200

Constant for M* = 0.9241 x (90σy D / NEt)-0.2858 - 0.1266

Where,
D is the diameter or across flats dimension of section = 234 mm
t is the section thickness = 5.0 mm
N is the number of sides = 20
2
E is Elastic modulus = 205 kN/mm
σy is the characteristic yield strength of Shaft Material = 355 MPa

NE/180σy = 20 x 205 x 10^3 / (180 x 355) = 64.16

D/t = 234.47727272 = 46.90 < 64.16

Therefore, Constant for M* = 1.00

However, the sample calculation for joint 9 if D/t were greater than NE/180σy is shown below
FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY

0 x 355 x 46.895454545454 -0.2858

= 0.9241 x – 0.1266
20 x 205 x 10^3
= 1.11

4) Calculation of Bending Resistance = 93.47 x 1 / 1.15

M* = Constant M* x Mp/γm = 81.28 N-m
Where,
Mp is plastic moment of resistance of the section = 93.47 kN-m
γm is the partial safety factor for material = 1.15

5) Calculation of Acceptance Factor

(Acceptance factor is the ratio of applied stress to permissible stress. If less than 1, it indicates that
the permissible stress is greater than the applied stress, and hence the mast is safe from buckling
or crumpling under the applied load)
AF = M / M* = 9.96 / 81.28 = 0.12
<1

6) Calculation of Deflection at Joint 3

The deflection is computed according to the Moment-Area Method.

The deflection of a member between two joints is dependent upon the deflection of the
underlying member, and on the forces acting on the member under consideration.
Since the calculation steps progressively increase, deflection calculation of joint number 3
is examined for simplicity of the formula
The deflection of the members are computed as the area enclosed by their bending
moment diagrams. The bending moment diagram is broken into triangles and rectangles.

Height of Mast between joints 1 and 2 (H12) = 250 cm

Height of Mast between joints 2 and 3 (H23) = 250 cm

Average Moment of Inertia between joint 1 and 2 (I12)= 46379.52 cm

Calculation of Deflection due to current section of mast (Joint 2 to 3)

Calculation of Triangular portion of the bending moment (AT2)

Base of Triangle = 316.31 - 246.34

3
(M/I)3 - (M/I)2 = 69.969803 N/cm
Height of Triangle
H23 = 250 cm
2
Therefore area of Triangle (AT2) = 8746.2254 N/cm

Calculation of Rectangular portion of the bending moment (AR2)

Base of Rectangle
3
(M/I)4 = 264.24638 N/cm
Height of Rectangle
H23 = 250 cm
2
Therefore area of Rectangle (AR2) = 66061.595 N/cm

Deflection induced due to current section of mast

D2 = [AR2 x (1 / 2) x H23 + AT2 x (2 / 3) x H23] / ε
66061.6 x (1/2) x 250 + 8746.23 x (2/3) x 250
=
205 x 10^5
= 0.474 cm

Therefore, Total Deflection of Joint 3 = (1.24 + 0.47) x 10

D = D1 + D2 = 17 mm

(The above calculation is similar to calculation of Maximum and Minimum forces on an isolated footing.
The total force due to wind load on the mast is assumed to cause tension in the bolts. The weight of the
mast and luminares is assumed to counter the uplift caused by tension forces. Hence, the maximum
tension in each bolt is the difference of the stress due to wind, and self weight of the mast and luminares.)

Diameter of bolt = 39 mm

Embedded length of bolt = 655 mm

Threaded length = 39 x 5

As per clause B-2 IS 456
Permissible bearing stress = 5 Mpa

Tensile force resisted by bolt = π x 39 x 655 x 0.8
