Fiction Analysis with Annotated Bibliography

Due: 6/9 at 11:30 PM on D2L

Goal: Write a short fiction analysis with an annotated bibliography

Essay Length: 4 pages
Sources: 5 outside sources (does not include primary text)
Format: MLA8

Assignment
Write an analysis of one story assigned during the fiction portion of this course. The goal of this
essay is to analyze the story in efforts to understand the theme, plot, character(s), or symbolism.
An analytical essay should include significant support from the text. This means that your thesis
should present an original point of analysis that you can fully develop with direct quotes from the
text.

Sources
This essay should also include five outside sources located in the SCC databases. Each outside
source must be incorporated in the essay as support for your points or as a way for you to refute
an opposing point of analysis.

Annotated Bibliography
Annotate each source for the Fiction Analysis assignment. Each annotation should contain 2-3
sentences of each: summary of the source, evaluation of the source, and discussion of how you
use the source in your essay. This will total 6-9 sentences for each annotation. Please do not
include any direct quotes in the annotations; include only your original work. The annotated
bibliography operates as the Works Cited page. It does not count towards the 4-page total for the
essay.

MLA8 Format
Both the essay and the annotated bibliography should follow MLA8 document format. You may
use a free program like Easybib.com to help create the annotated bibliography. You may also
review the format for an Annotated Bibliography on the SCC Library handout:
http://library.sccsc.edu/SubjectGuides/english/annotated-bibliography.asp

Grading
The fiction analysis and annotated bibliography are worth 10% of your course grade each (20%
total). Students who earn less than 70% on the annotated bibliography may complete a second
annotated bibliography with the second essay as an additional rewrite option.
