Subject: Project 3 Reflection Memo

Date: August 10, 2018

The purpose of this memo is to desmonstate success in reaching the Student Learning

Objectives (SLOs) for English 307 SSII18. Use and support from artifacts created in and out of the

course will assist in demonstrating this success.

The first student learning objective met during this course was, “Critically use key rhetorical

concepts through analyzing and composing a multitude of professional and technical texts and

genres responding to a variety of cultural situations and global audiences”. I worked on this

objective through Project 2 which was completed in the course and fact sheets that I created at my

internship for the Mayahuel Underage Drinking Prevention Program. While both artifacts allowed

me to work on the objective, the fact sheets created for the Mayahuel program is what allowed me

to fully meet this objective. Creating the fact sheets allowed me to achieve this objective because

multiple versions were created for different racial/ ethnic groups. Due to the differences in each

revision, I had to be culturally competent and understand each differing cultural situation.

The second SLO met was, “Participate in intentional cross-cultural relationships during

collaborative and social aspects of writing processes, including giving and responding to productive

feedback and working in teams”. I achieved this objective through extensive collaboration with my

group in Project 2 in this course. I worked on this objective through constant collaboration with my

team and by understanding our own different cultural perspectives and relationships to address

cross-cultural issues for the project. We also provided constant feedback for each other which

assisted in our revision process.

The third SLO I achieved was, “Reflect on development of self as a writer, building on prior

experiences to respond to new and challenging contexts”. Considering this objective, I progressed

through Projects 1 and 3 of this course. In both projects, I had to encounter new contexts that I was

unfamiliar with and use prior knowledge and multiple revisions to progress the projects to their final

state. Through these revisions, and newly gained skills for those contexts, I was able to reflect how

each project assisted me in progressing as a writer in different aspects.

Lastly, the fourth SLO I was able to meet was, “Deconstruct how genre conventions for

structure, paragraphing, tone, and mechanics vary; compose using common formats and/or design

features for different kinds of texts”. I worked on this objective the most through Project 1. Within

this project, there were many different texts that each had their own structure, tone and mechanics. I

had to work through each separate text, some of which were completely new to me, and consider

feedback and suggestions to guide my revisions. Through these multiple revisions, I understood the

distinct differences between the varying texts and could progress my writing for each of them.

With the guidance set from the student learning objectives, I was able to progress as a writer

through varying texts in this course. This allowed me to enhance my writing outside of the course

while still addressing the student learning objectives. The skills and knowledge gained from the

course will continue to benefit me in the future and guide the progression of my writing.
