What is AP Studio Art, The 2D Design and Drawing Portfolio?

AP Studio Art, The 2D Design Portfolio and the Drawing Portfolio are rigorous courses where the
student submits a 2D Design Portfolio or Drawing Portfolio to the College Board for assessment. The
portfolio is broad in interpretation for the type of works that may be submitted –ANALOG OR
DIGITAL. The first part of the portfolio requires the submission of 12 BREADTH pieces. These works
demonstrate variety in visual problems, media, or specifics as related to the 2D Design Portfolio.
These works are based on teacher prompts and some BREADTH works may be from works previously
created in prior art classes. Please bring these works to class for a review of suitability in you AP
Studio Art Portfolio. The second section of the portfolio requires the student to do a focused study to
create a body of works for the CONCENTRATION section. The Concentration is student derived and
must demonstrate mastery of the chosen techniques to execute 10 -12 individual works that
demonstrate personal vision that are visually coherent. The third section of the portfolio submission is
the QUALITY section, where the student’s 5 best works (no larger than 18 x 24 inches) are physically
submitted to the College Board. The other works in the student portfolio are submitted through a
digital upload. This is a very demanding and exciting course for the highly motivated art student.

Course Description: Students work in a self-directed environment to develop a

portfolio showing a body of their own work that visually explores a particular artistic
concern, articulated and supported by a written artist's statement. Artists may work
in, but are not limited to, content in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media,
traditional photography, digital photography, and/or new media and emerging
technologies that demonstrate understanding of design principles as applied to a 2-
dimensional surface.
Students regularly reflect on aesthetics and art issues individually and as a group, and
manipulate the structural elements of art and organizational principles of design to create 2-
dimensional works of art that are progressively more innovative and representative of the student's
artistic and cognitive growth.
In keeping with the rigor expected in an accelerated setting, students’ portfolios show personal vision
and artistic growth over time, mastery of visual art skills and techniques, and evidence of
sophisticated analytical and problem-solving skills based on their structural, historical, and cultural
knowledge.
Students are self-directed and display readiness for high levels of critical thinking, research,
conceptual thinking, and creative risk-taking.
Students will practice, sketch, and manipulate the structural elements of art or work with drawing
issues to improve mark making and/or the organizational principles of design in a composition from
observation, research, and/or imagination to create work
Through the critique process, students will evaluate and respond to their own work and that of their
peers.

AP Portfolio Course Overview

This individual program allows the student to explore individual interests as a portfolio is developed
along with meeting the standards set by the College Board. The AP Portfolio is a demanding
undertaking that is for the advanced art student, seeking to challenge him or her and develop an art
portfolio to earn college credit. Students may work with traditional and non-traditional art media to
explore 2D Design visual problems. Cultural and Social Perspectives may be incorporated into projects,
as well as art historical references, and symbolism. Creative analog manipulation of traditional artwork
may be explored with traditional media or through experimentation and / or using Adobe Photoshop /
Gimp or Digital techniques.
The work created in AP Studio Art is a serious endeavor. The work of each student will be
photographically documented throughout the year so it can be included in his or her AP Studio Art
Portfolio to be submitted to the College Board for college. Students are responsible for photographing
and editing each completed work. It is highly suggested to photograph work in process. Work will also
be entered in area competitions and art shows.

Students must also meet the requirements set by the College Board for submission of an AP Studio Art
2D Design Portfolio.

General Criteria for Grading:

Grading is based on a point system. Each assignment will have specific criteria, which the student must meet.
Project assignments are assigned points – 100 – 600 pts. Research / Inquiry / Sketchbook work is also
assigned points as related to each assignment. Sketchbook works may be graded as PROJECTS.

CLASS ART STUDIO:

1. You are to use only the computer assigned to you!
2. You have a class folder for printed work.
3. SAFE EJECT YOUR SD CARD – YOU RISK LOOSING YOUR IMAGES IF YOU DO NOT SAFE EJECT!
4. Make sure you shut down the computer properly at the end of class and return its proper place /
PLUG IT IN. Do not just close the lid!
5. Others use the same space to work. PLEASE make sure to leave your work area clean at the end of
class. Take a last look before you leave class to make sure everything is in order and you have all your
supplies returned to the correct place. This is part of your studio practice / responsibilities.

2D AP and DRAWING Classes SUPPLIES:

Many class project supplies are provided. YOU MUST HAVE A SKETCHBOOK SET OF SUPPLIES TO WORK OUT
YOUR IDEAS. This is a list of supplemental supplies that are REQUIRED for class. Please take care to LABEL ALL
your personal art supplies and keep them in your backpack at the end of each class.

8. 14” x 20” Fiber Portfolio to store your work, as there are not any flat shelves large enough for your work to
be stored. YOU MAY MAKE A PORTFOLIO OUT OF POSTER BOARD OR CARDBOARD.
9. Your personal favorite art tools- Though I will have most supplies (QUALITY – Paints, paper, tools, etc.) for
you, you will be working with individually chosen media as you develop your work. If your supplies of choice are
not available in the class studio, you will be responsible for acquiring your own materials of choice if you wish to
work with other media not readily available in class.
10. 4GB or larger SD Card to document your work digitally and to save your work. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN SD
CARD YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO USE THE CLASS CAMERA OR WORK ON THE CLASS AP COMPUTERS DUE TO
STORAGE ISSUES. You may use your cell phone to document your work and save in Google Photos. Make sure
your image quality is set to high quality.
AKA the OLIVIA Addendum: You cannot use the teacher SD Card.

6. Communicate good news, bad news, important news, and any pertinent information that would affect your
work or class participation. I am here to cheer you on, to listen, to help, to advocate for you, and to make any
situation workable, but you must COMMUNICATE with me. Ask me questions if something is not clear or you
need help. Let me know of any problems.
7. Keep your CELL PHONE off and away during class unless we are doing a class activity that requires you to
research on your phone. ASK FIRST! I WILL SEND YOUR PHONE TO THE OFFICE FOR PARENT PICK UP IF IT IS OUT
WITHOUT PERMISSION. COMPUTERS ARE USED FOR RESEACRH AND CLASS WORK – NOT FOR GAMES OR OTHER
CLASSES’ WORK.
8. No food is allowed in class. This protects YOU AND YOUR artwork. If you have a drink, make sure you can close
it or it has a lid so it does not spill on your work.
9. Do not venture to the “Off Limits” areas of the art room without teacher permission, i.e., outside patio,
teacher planning area, supply / storage areas.
