EL PRETÉRITO (lesson 7)
2) –ar and –er verbs* that are stem-changing in the present are regular in the preterite:
a) encontrar (o>u): encuentro-encuentras-encuentra-encontramos-encontráis-encuentran
(preterit): encontré-encontraste-encontró-encontramos-encontrasteis-encontraron
b) entender (e>ie): entiendo-entiendes-entiende-entendemos-entendéis-entienden
(preterit): entendí-entendiste-entendió-entendimos-entendisteis-entendieron
*note: the verb poder—an –er verb—undergoes a stem change in the present (o>ue)
but it is irregular in the preterit (see below).
3) Verbs ending in –car, –gar, and –zar, have irregular 1st person singular in the preterit [p. 170]
sacar yo saqué jugar yo jugué empezar yo empecé
* Note that the 3rd person singular of the verb Hacer, is hizo (the c changes to z to maintain the original
sound of the c).
** Note that the “-i”in the 3rd person plural of the verbs decir, traer, conducir, and traducir, is omitted.
1) The preterite of Hay (there is, there are), impersonal form of Haber, is Hubo, (there
was, there were)
2) As you may recall from lesson 7, “Spanish has no equivalent for the English did,
which is used as an auxiliary verb in questions and negative sentences.”
3) The preterite sums up a condition or state viewed as a whole (and no longer in effect).
— Andrés no vino a la clase ayer. “Andrés didn’t come to class yesterday.”
