1. To express how long something has been going on, the following formula is used in Spanish:

Hace + length of time + que + verb (in the present tense)

E.g.: Hace tres horas que estudio = “I have been studying for three hours”*

* “Note that English uses the present progressive or present perfect tense [“I have been
studying”] to express the same concept (See footnote, p.139).

2. To ask how long something has been going on: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + (subj.) + verb
(present)?

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (tú) estudias español? = “How long have you been studying
Spanish”?

---Hace dos años que estudio español. = “I have been studying Spanish for two years.”

*Alternative construction (Verb + hace + time): Estudio español hace dos años. (“que” is
omitted)

II. Lección 9: Hace …meaning ago (p. 231)

1.) Hace + period of time + que + verb ( in the preterit)

E.g., Hace dos años que (yo) estudié español = “I studied Spanish two years ago.”

2.) How long ago something took place?: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + (subj.) + verb (preterit)?

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (tú) pediste la cuenta? = “How long ago did you ask for the bill?”

---Hace una hora que (yo) pedí la cuenta. = “I asked for the bill an hour ago.”

*Alternative construction (Verb + hace + time): Pedí la cuenta hace una hora. (“que” is omitted)
