A HEROINE IN DISGUISE
(by ANNE CORINE A. RAMOS
As dedicated to MS. MA. AGNES R. MATAWARAN)

“Values are more indispensable than scientific laws, theories

or formulas” is what my teacher told me when I was still a 6th
grade pupil. Laws, theories and the likes can be refuted, they are
not eternal truths. They are easy to memorize as well as to
forget. Knowing many things, being an intellect may give you a
feeling of prominence, but then, it can’t give you a whole sense of
fulfillment. But a small act of kindness, a life lived for others,
having self-effacement despite your achievements in life, being
generous to the deprived are the things that can really make you
exceptional. It is not your knowledge that can make you notable
and evocative, but it is the character and great personality that
can make you reminiscent even if years pass by. Academic
knowledge would be of no value if a person fails to possess good
behavior that will shape his knowledge towards the furtherance of
himself. In short, intelligence knowledge and wit are nothing
without a kind a pure heart.

According to Thomas Alva Edison: “Genius is 99% inspiration

and 1% inspiration”. I first heard this quotation from my teacher
who inspired me to always strive for excellence and persevere in
my studies. Education continues until our last breath. Albert
Einstein said that intellectual growth should commence at birth
and cease only at death. We should be life-long learners.
Persevere and persevere. Even the geniuses commit mistakes
and the scientists repeat their experiments to obtain accurate and
precise results. Failures and problems are the spices of life.
These failures are actually the secret to success because they
serve as the practice shots and doors for improvements. They
make a person tougher than yesterday which will enable him to
surpass the problems of the future. We learn from our mistakes.
Another thing is that we shouldn’t take life in a rush. Haste
makes waste. An example of this is the story of a woman had a
pet mongoose. It was very faithful. One day, she went to the
market leaving her baby in the care of the mongoose. At that
time, a big cobra entered the house. The mongoose killed it after
a long and fierce fight. When the woman came back, she saw the
mongoose lying at the entrance. She noticed its blood-covered
mouth. In her haste, the woman thought that the mongoose
killed her baby. In a moment of sudden fury, the woman threw
the water pot on the mongoose and killed it. Alas! When she
entered the house, she was filled with remorse. Her baby was
playing cheerfully. Nearby, a big cobra lay dead. The woman
shed tears of grief fondling the carcass of the mongoose. Moral:
do not act in haste or might regret in the end. “Stay committed
to your decision but flexible in your approach.” Another value that
I acquired from my teacher is responsibility. Being a leader is not
an easy task. You should be deeply committed with your duties
and responsibilities. Leadership should come from the heart. It is
giving and sacrificing oneself. Be able to discover different
approaches. Leave your comfort zone, be open-minded. If you
leave your comfort zone, you will be able to adapt to different
changes that may come on your way. To be a good leader, you
must be a good follower. If you yourself disobey rules then your
associates will not follow also. Leaders should be the first to
abide in the law that they implemented or else they will not gain
the respect of their associates. This was true with my experience,
thanks to my teacher who continues to guide me along the way.
She made me realize my mistake and corrected me. It feels like I
was slapped on my face upon hearing her sermon but it’s okay, a
leader must be accountable enough in facing the consequences of
his actions and learn from these. “Seize every opportunity that
comes your way. Don’t waste them, for sometimes, they came
only once in a lifetime. Believe in your ability, do the best you
can.” A statement of moral support is very much pleasing to the
ears. Truly, self-confidence is the first requisite to great
undertakings, for if you don’t have self-confidence, you won’t be
able to win a battle because you don’t have the will of winning it
at all. And the most important thing that I learned from what she
always says: “TO GOD BE THE GLORY”, is to submit everything to
our Creator. Praise Him for His goodness for without Him we are
all nothing. Glorify His name by sharing each one’s God-given
talents, by proclaiming His goodness and His word and lastly by
living up the Christian values…

As I quote from Henry Brooks Adams, “A teacher affects

eternity; she can never tell where his influence stops.” I
realized that my life would never be the same without my teacher
who has influenced and inspired me a lot since I was on my
elementary days. “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I
do and I understand.” She’s my teacher…and she’s my hero…
