information for Chikane. “It seems

(Maguwu) because he suddenly
changed his approach and we later
learnt of his decision to certify the
situation around Chiadzwa as well as
Farai's arrest,” the source, whose
identity we cannot reveal said.
Maguwu was repeatedly denied bail by
the courts and there was growing
international outcry over his
incarceration until his release a
fortnight ago. His incarceration was
one of the issues being cited by those
countries and organizations still
opposing the decision to allow
Zimbabwe to sell the diamonds from
Chiadzwa.

Experts in the international trade of diamonds insists that

fields in Marange may never find a way onto the official
market of trade due to very stringent measures and
monitoring system.
The Zimbabwe Government of National Unity this has
announced its plans to go ahead and sell huge quantities of
gemstones from Chiadzwa that have been stockpiling despite
the stalemate that came out of the KP meeting held in Tel
Aviv last month.
We spoke to an expert in international diamond trade in
Harare on condition he remains anonymous and he said there
have always been very stringent systems, but which are being
further tightened aimed at ensuring the diamonds from
Chiadzwa are not accepted on the official market.
“I can assure you, they (Zim) will never sell those diamonds
on the official market,” he said. “There are very tight
systems across the whole world and which make it impossible
for Zimbabwe's diamonds to be smuggled through. Every
diamond that enters this market is monitored and it has to be
known where it originated from.”
The expert added that Zimbabwe could only trade the
Chiadzwa diamond through what he described as “some
illegal and unscrupulous channels operated by mafia or
illegal dealers”, which possibility he said could lead to the
total ban on the country's diamonds by the international
community.
Zimbabwe has already been selling diamonds from Chiadzwa
illegally on the international black market, through both
state institutions and individuals involved in the looting orgy
that has dominated the Chiadzwa diamonds' saga.

Stakeholders and donor organizations
have taken a major step towards reviving
the water and sewage reticulation systems
here, which have degenerated into serious
health hazards.
The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) and the

Vision, and AusAID have joined hands to
launch the Bulawayo Water and Sewage
Emergency Response(BOWSER)
programme in efforts to revive the city's
health and sanity to prevent the outbreak
of diseases.
The launch of the programme was held at
the Large City Hall in Bulawayo on June 24.
Speaking at the launch, the World Vision's
Humanitarian Emergency Affairs Director,
Daniel Muchena said the programme is the
first for Bulawayo and Zimbabwe and that
they will work together with the
BCC, Dabane Trust and other partners
including the private sector to
carry out the emergency rehabilitation
works to the city's sewage and
water reticulation systems that are in

“One of our core values is that we are

evidence of this,” said Muchena.

projects in Beitbridge, Gwanda and
Bulawayo in response to 2008/9 cholera
outbreak that affected more than 80 000
people and at least 3 800 lives were

After bitter wrangling involving two rival factions, the Zimbabwe National

Q-What is the story now, we hear of
reunification of Zinasu, for which you
are said to be president?
A-To begin with I want to state that
Zinasu degenerated into its worst
crisis when there were divisions and
we had two factions. But on the 2nd of
May this year executive leaders from
both factions came together and
elected an interim leadership.
On the 22nd of May a General Council
meeting was held and endorsed the
interim leadership, meaning it
became substantive. I became the
president and Joshua Chinyere
became the secretary general. We are
now an autonomous union, with
independent offices and in the
process of employing a secretariat.
Q-But we still hear Tafadzwa
Mugwadi, who was leading one of the
factions claiming to be president of
Zinasu?
A-Tafadzwa Mugwadi was part of the
meeting on the 22nd of May and was
leading a delegation for which I was a
member. The problem came on the
issue of positions and that is where he
differed with us before walking out.
But we are saying there are more
critical issues needing our attention
than mere positions and the union
comes before any individual interests.
He (Mugwadi), together with
Lovemore Madhuku (NCA chairman)
and Kudakwashe Chakabva seem to
want o run some appendage of the
NCA youth wing because we thought
we had all resolved our differences
and now coming together to have one
Zinasu, which is now united.
Q-What is the mission of the united
Zinasu
A-We are set to confront the list of
challenges that are facing the
students in Zimbabwe. These include
underfunding of the education sector.
We are fighting against the cadetship
scheme, which we view as slavery.
We are also confronting the
government of the day in as far as the
quality of education is concerned. We
want the government to formulate an
education policy which clearly
articulates a concrete plan. We are
demanding the right to education to
be in the constitution and clearly
outlined.
Let me mention that we are facing the
arrogance of the government. We
have been writing letters to the
Chancellor (President Robert Mugabe)
and the Prime Minister but not getting
any cooperation. We are planning to
go to the streets. We will make this
country ungovernable. We are now
going for a national protest.
Q-Talking of which, what is your
assessment of the Government of
National Unity?
A-It has presided over the worst
record in terms of education delivery
even going back to pre-independence
era.
To us the GNU is just a government of
excuses and it is not doing anything
for the welfare of students. The
students of Zimbabwe are demanding
the desolution of the GNU and fresh
elections thereafter.
Q-Who is harboring your united union,
or who are you backing? Previously we
had the two factions having alliances
in politics and civil society, for
example one was harbored by NCA and
the other by Crisis Coalition?
A-The students' union is not an
appendage of any organization. We
have strategic alliances with
organizations such as the ZCTU but we
remain independent and autonomous.
Q-What is the state of funding for the
union?
A-There is no funding currently for
the students' union and we are
surviving on the benevolence of a few
individuals that are making sacrifices
from their own resources to keep us
operating.
Q-What is your position over the
constitutional reform process being
spearheaded by parliament?
A-It is a sham. We hear reports of
widespread violence and confusion.
Nothing much has happened in as far
as gathering the people's views is
concerned.
But as it stands we have our own
demands we want to see in the new
constitution. These include the right
to education for all Zimbabweans, a
two-term presidential tenure and the
removal of an age restriction on
presidential candidates.
If they do not incorporate these we
will not accept the document. But let
me make it clear that the process is
flawed and we are not part of it.
Q-What is your position regarding
whether or not elections should be
held with or without a new
constitution?
A-We believe there is need for
electoral reforms that give an
environment for the holding of free
and fair elections. We can go for
elections if there are acceptable
reforms and the United Nations and
SADC supervise them.
Q-And your message to students in
Zimbabwe?
A-This is the time for us to unite to
withstand all forms of pressure from
within and outside the union so that
we fight for the improvement of our
welfare as well as the future of
Zimbabwe's students.

A-Firstly, I need to point out that this
claim is not coming from students
who know that after the divisions of
2009 there have been several
attempts to unify us but the problem
being that they have been
spearheaded by some external
elements who believe to be the god
fathers of students unionism in the
country.
These external elements have been

Mliswa saga-absolute nonsense
Like a soap opera, the saga involving Zanu PF
activist Temba Mliswa has taken twists and
turns as it deepens towards what appears to be
inevitable disaster for him, yet posing a
legitimate scenario for the nation of
Zimbabwe.
There is no need to attempt defending Mliswa
and neither should it be our interest to nail him
or enjoy him going down through the cases
mounting against him. That is for the law to
address based on the existence of facts and
issues that happened.
Very interesting however are a number of
important aspects of the manner the whole
Mliswa saga has happened, and still unfolds.
First and foremost, the shocking revelations of
how it is alleged Mliswa literally became a
loose cannon and hoodlum is very poignant and
proves what has been said over and over again
only that the stupid Zanu PF system of Robert
Mugabe has remained in denial. The so-called
land reform programme started since 2000 was
nothing more than chaotic, barbaric and crazy
looting by the Zanu PF leaders.

Mliswa could freely move around and grab or
loot things as alleged in the cases before the
courts now, then God forbid. What about the
big fish at the central bank, at Mukwati

untouched. Its effects will continue crippling
the nation.
And the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)? Oh,
dear.
May God have mercy on Zimbabwe and help us
drive away the devil from high places.

fter hearing a lot of talk

recently make time and
watch ZTV with the specific desire
to check what I had heard from one
colleague as “ridiculous jingles”.
Unlike some of my colleagues,
however, I was not entirely
surprised or shocked when I had to
bear with indeed what can only be
described as ridiculous on the part
of ZTV as one of the Zanu PF jungles
was played on the screen at hourly
intervals. I was not surprised, but
rather something happened to me.
The jingle they seem to prefer the
most or regard as the hit song,
called Nyatsoteerera re-invoked

footage consistently showing

amidst horror unfolding across the
country of Zimbabwe.

Very few victims of the small king
would have noticed or understood the
significance of one of his latest acts of
madness because of many reasons,
but chief among them the fact that
the victims of this abusive and
tyrannical small king have been
pulverized into submission as well as
some state of behaving like dead
zombies.
Small king, so arrogantly and
shamelessly abused his excessive
powers to have the huge debts and
heap of rubbish him and his fellow
thieves have been piling at the
kingdom's central bank transferred to
the poor peasants and workers of this
troubled small kingdom.
Most will easily remember the looting
and plundering orgy that the small
king, using as his chief strategist the
corrupt head of the central bank,
carried out for a couple of years,
characterized by robbing the national
coffers, dishing out non-existent
money, printing fake money as well as
stealing everything and anything that
the central bank had under its
reserves. They invented all sorts of
names and titles to label their
economic and political madness all
aimed at self-enrichment of the small
king and his gangs of thieves as well as
murderers.
It was going to be unavoidable that
the central bank would plunge into
serious crisis epitomized by it owing
huge amounts to individuals and
institutions both in the small kingdom

buffoon on behalf of his master, the
small king. These poor peasants and
workers were helplessly bearing the
brunt of shortages, inflation as well
as long queues which emanated from
the looting and stealing. Very few of
them had access to the loot and
benefits of the stupid policies but
here they are now being forced by
their small king to pay the debt.
It never rains for the small kingdom
victims. There they have the small
king, arrogantly staying in power and

Poor fat cheeked, he must be
perfecting the art of looting and
stealing as well as he increasingly gets
immersed in the comfort of the small
king's system of plunder and looting.
Even the less intelligent of winnower's
students have been observing and
commenting on the gradual toning
down by fat cheeked and his gang of
followers, who are surely enjoying
what the small king gives to all those
who accept to be his wives.

him carries nothing much but a lot of
political prostitution.
By the way, never mind that the small
kingdom is broke and suffering from a
serious lack of funds, small king is

(Mis)Firing Morgan's legacy

I was one of the Zimbabweans sent
into serious pondering and soul-
searching on several days recently.
Communicating from my mobile
phone was an uphill task and the
internet connection from everywhere
was a hell of an experience. For those
of us who rely largely on
communication for our daily tasks and
fulfillment of schedules, these
experiences are disastrous.
I am sure there are increasing
numbers of Zimbabweans whose
livelihoods depend on the availability
of communication systems and one
shudders to imagine what becomes of
the situation like experienced on
some terrible days.
At one time after struggling up to 20
attempts to send an sms from my
mobile I wondered. There was no
explanation from anyone about the
problems with networks and internet
connections. Something reminded me
we were getting the same of the old
that is part of our standards and
values. The same of the proven failing
Mugabe system that has mediocrity
and failure as some of its entrenched
values.
But there is a young man called Nelson
Chamisa. A former firebrand students'
union leader, MDC youth mobiliser,
and now one of the men and women
making up the Government of
National Unity (GNU).
He is the minister of Information
Communication and Technology, and
Nelson would obviously come into my
thoughts as I continuously battled
hard to try and send a single sms for 30
minutes or spent an hour trying to
open an internet link. I recalled
several of occasions when Chamisa
articulates his highly ambitious and
plausible wishes and plans for his
ministry, which include, in his own
words “making Zimbabwe the super
highway of ICTs in Africa”.
Inevitably I questioned how and why
he could have survived the chop when
his party leader and GNU Prime
Minister Morgan Tsvangirai fired the
likes of Elias Mudzuri, Fidelis Mhashu

and Thamsanqa Mahlangu. Was Nelson
considered to be competent or to have
achieved the goals set for him when

In the end I managed to smile and
reduce the pressure of terrible

practically criticizing and analyzing
Morgan's move and finding it to be
more of the drama that the GNU
politics have been, and which the
MDC-T leader himself is increasingly
becoming an embodiment of.
Morgan, for long considered to be the
face of the struggle against the Zanu
PF Mugabe dictatorship, a champion
of democracy and fighter for human
rights to be upheld, is increasingly
getting deeper into the reality of
being part of a political battle for
long modeled along the values and
attitudes that Zanu PF is known for,
such as hypocrisy, deception,
selfishness and even barbarism.
A system and culture in which people
spend much of their time fighting and
squabbling behind their closed doors,
even to the extent they could plot
each other's death but when they
want to achieve something, they go
out to say “we are working well” and
other such nonsense.
A system in which gradually all and
sundry move away from the common
goals and the aspirations of those
down at the bottom line of society for
personal expediency.
Granted, it is in order for Morgan, as a
leader to hire and fire those working
under him based on their
performances as well as his plans for
the office he occupies. But we also
have to be honest with each other
without fear or favour that one of the
attributes of good leadership is
objectivity and the other is
consistency.
By firing the few individuals is Morgan
trying to make us believe that the
rest, including Robert Mugabe, Arthur
Mutambara and himself are any
better? I would be shocked if he really
believes this! Does he believe the

mandarins from Zanu PF who are part
of the so-called cabinet deserve to
continue masquerading as
government ministers?
If there is anyone who should be fired
first in the GNU it is Mugabe, followed
by Tsvangirai himself and Arthur
because they are the so-called
principals and we have even heard
from some of their juniors that the
barbaric failure by them to fully
implement the Global Political
Agreement has them to shoulder
much of the blame.
I am not attempting to defend or
exonerate any of the individuals
Morgan fired recently, but my point is
in plain and simple terms, the fellow
from Buhera is increasingly sinking
into the mode of stupid politics we
have grown tired of at the hands of
Mugabe, which include acts of
scratching the surface, doing window
dressing or trying to apply lipstick to a
frog amidst ululation from blind
followers.
Which, or how many, ministries have,
since the formation of the GNU,
performed or delivered Mr Prime
Minister? Which of the so-called
principals has broken from the norm
and tradition to tackle head on and
expose the decadence that is choking
this country through corruption in the
diamonds sector for example, or
abuse of state funds by those in this
GNU, led by their principals through
globetrotting?
The effects of Morgan's act, which to
some of us is simply inconsequential,
include hoodwinking pliable
Zimbabweans into believing he is busy
and seriously attending to work when
in reality all he is doing is trying to
apply lipstic to a frog. Another day
passed with smiles on the green lawns
of state house and this time it was
Tapiwa Mashakada excitedly standing
before the cameras to talk about his
dreams about revamping the
economy.

did exactly the same there not so long
ago before he came face to face with
the reality of an animal called Zanu PF
system, which runs this country and
remains determined to resist any
reform for selfish interest. Ask Elton
about the hell of working hard and
sincerely trying to do the right thing
only to find out you are part of a
dysfunctional system of political
hypocrisy and deception.
But the worst part in my view in the
latest all-for-free comedy by Morgan
is the manner he used to handle the
whole issue, which is key in analyzing
and understanding his approach and
strategies as a leader. The MDC-T
leader had his juniors in the party
later tell the media things such as
that they had been shocked by the
news of their firing.
I laughed when I read a report which
quoted Mahlangu saying he had learnt
of his dismissal through the media
whilst attending his mother's funeral
and still believed he was the deputy
minister he had been made to believe
he would be all along.
Mudzuri and Fidelis Mhashu also
mourned their dismissal as well as
pouring scorn over the whole move,
further exposing the whole drama
being directed by Morgan at Harvest
House as an appendage of the GNU.
Yet their leader claimed the decisions
were taken also to ensure those fired
would attend to party business with
more time and attention.
Phew, kangaroo politics!
It doesn't need a lot of intelligence to
see here the possibility of the
dismissals having been a way of
dealing with divisions and power
struggles in his party and suffice to
say, that is Morgan's own business,
which is likely to produce some
reactions and developments within
his party, again which will be his own
business.
Time will tell.

Mliswa's “file”
reportedly getting more

Temba Mliswa and are putting
together more cases to pile on
the already long list that has
seen him remain in custody for
over a month now.
Inquiries by The News Leader
in the goings-on in the Mliswa
saga reveal that despite him
having clumsly involved
himself in violent and
unlawful property grab in the
name of the chaotic land
reform programme of Zanu PF,
he is involved in a bitter battle
that has its origins within the
Zanu PF's power struggles as
well as also personal
differences with senior
officials within the system.
A number of people involved
and privy to the Mliswa saga,
mainly within the police force
and judiciary system have
confirmed that there are
powerful hands behind the
goings-on, with a senior police
officer saying there are more
cases yet to be revealed that
the architects of the plot
intend to bring before the
courts.
The sources say there is a "file"
that has been in the hands of
senior police officers who over
the years have been compiling
and keeping track of Mliswa's
conduct and behaviour.
It has always been believed
within the circles of power
that the Zanu PF system of
Robert Mugabe, which is run
on the basis of patronage has
its members held to ransom
and and bay by the aged leader
through his intelligence
system, which keeps track and
records their misdemenours.
Members of the Mugabe
system are understood to be
aware that their leader,
through his dreaded
intelligence system, has
records of their criminal acts
and uses them to whip them
into line. It is said within their
circles that Mugabe, or his
intelligence chiefs
occasionally summon senior
officials including top
government officials to
remind them about their
misdeeds and warn about the
concequences in the event
action is taken as a way to
whip them into line and keep
them loyal to the geriatric
leader.
Mliswa is said by insiders to
Temba Mliswa
have stepped on the toes of
senior officials within the
Mugabe system, who are
understood to include Police
Commissioner General,
Augustine Chihuri.
"The issue of bad blood
existing betweeen Mliswa and
Chihuri is now commonly
known within the corridors of
power, and the young man
(Mliswa) made it worst
recently when he spoke badly
about the police chief," our
source said.
Mliswa is reported to have
blasted Chihuri and labelled
him a corrupt individual
recently before his world
started crumbling around him.
He was arrested over a fraud
case and has since seen his
cases grow to five as he
remains in custody.
"There are more cases coming
up and his file is growing
bigger, he might indeed end up
having to answer charges in up
to 20 cases," a well-placed
source within the police
system revealed to us this
week.
He added that a team put
together to work on the
Mliswa saga by those in
powerful positions has been
all over, to the central bank,
finance houses and
commercial banks where it is
believed there are issues that
may be used to nail Mliswa on
new charges of fraud and

corruption.
In an interesting revelation,
and as an expose of the fact
that the Mliswa saga is being
plotted by powerful
individuals out to settle issue
with him, it has emerged that
those in key positions within
the police and government
circles have since ensured
there are no fears for any
other Zanu PF members to be
arrested over land and
property grab allegations
similar to those sinking
Mliswa.
"There is nothing of that sort
happening," a top source
retorted when we inquired
whether there were
possibilities of more
individuals being brought to
book. "There was never
anything beyond the Mliswa
saga and I can assure you that
is not a story at all."
There had been a flurry of
speculation that more could
be arrested over similar
charges but with serious
doubts since the majority of
people involved in the thick of
property grab since the start
of the controversial land
reform programme in 2000 are
within the Mugabe system and
include the very top officials
themselves.

Zimbabwe's CD4 count
increased by WHO
HARARE,
ZIMBABWE'S CD4 count has been increased from
200 to 350 by the World Health Organisation
(WHO) The News Leader can reveal.
The WHO said the count had been increased
following improved health trends and
medicational facilities internationally.
"The CD4 count has been increased from 200 to
350," a spokesman for the National Aids Council
(NAC) said in an interview.
"This follows global trends where the count has
also been increased. This will however mean that
our resources also need to be increased to match
this figure," he said.
He said the ARV figure needed in Zimbabwe would
also shoot up from a mere 250 000 currently to 500
000 following the increase in the CD4 count
globally
The CD4 count is the figure an HIV positive person
needs to have as a minimum for them to receive
ARV treatment.
The spokesman said the new figure meant that the
country's ARV resources would receive more
pressure and there was need to immediately boost
the amount of money made available for ARV
procurement countrywide.
Zimbabwe has more than five million people either
infected or affected by the HIV/Aids virus.
More than 3 000 people are dying weekly, the WHO
has confirmed.
Sikhala attack causes fears
HARARE
The attack on MDC99 leader job Sikhala's home by
suspected Zanu PF activists has been viewed as the
heralding of another possible wave of political
violence as the possibility of national elections
being held next year looms large.
Sikhala reported that a group of individuals
driving an unmarked vehicle last week attacked his
St Marys home and petrol-bombed a bus that was
parked outside. He said that although the
attackers left fliers purpoting to be from the MDC-
T, he was convinced they were Zanu PF activists.
“It is the works of Zanu PF and they tried to fool us
into believing this would be the MDC-T,” Sikhala
said. He added that he has been a target of
assaults as well as victimisation lately since his
formation of his party a couple of months ago.
A founding member of the original MDC in 1999,
Sikhala defected at the split of 2005 to join the
smaller faction led by Arthur Mutambara but has
since formed his own party.
The News Leader heard from political analysts
that the attack on Sikhala's home, coming at the
same time with other signs of political tension
mounting, could be a harbinger of a looming wave
of political violence and tension as the nation
draws closer to next year, which could see it
holding national elections.
“That is a sign of what is likely to return on the
political front and dominate as soon as dates of
elections are announced,” Fanuel Maremba of
Harare said. “It is likely, if not obvious, that the
usual culprits, Zanu PF are behind the scenes of
violence witnessed so far.”
Another political analyst who remains unnamed
said the intensity of violence might even increase.
“There is the possibility we might have even more
serious violence because of a number of factors,
such as the emergence of new players on the
political players such as Sikhala's party,” he said.

GMB says money not enough

Economy stagnant and starting to weaken again

The lack of significant investments
and capital injection in the
Zimbabwean economy that has
prevailed for a long time has started
taking toll and gradually weakening
what had been rescued from the
meltdown of the past couple of years.
Indicators of economic fundamentals
such as the Gross Domestic Product
(GDP), inflation rate, capacity
utilisation and others have struggled
to revive the required impetus
towards achievement of growth,
sustainable strength as well as
security.
Surveys carried out by The News
Leader recently prove that the
country's economy has for the period
since the formation of the inclusive
government comprising Zanu PF and
the MDC factions, largely remained
stagnant although, compared to the
immediate past experience, safe
from the terrible effects that fuelled
a meltdown. Money printing, fiscal
and monetary policy indiscipline as
well as abuse by the Zanu PF regime
before the creation of the
Government of National Unity last
year had become sure recipes for
uncontrollable economic meltdown.
However, largely through the
intervention of Minister of Finance
Tendai Biti in the handling of fiscal
and monetary issues, the chaos by
Zanu PF came to an end, coupled with
the abandonment of the dead
Zimbabwe Dollar the unprecedented
free-fall was arrested.
As often admitted by Biti himself, the
current lack of impetus for economic
growth emanates from the poor
response to the country's appeal for
aid, lines of credit as well as
investments. At the presentation of
this current term's budget last year,
Biti indicated that he anticipated an
amount above US$800 million to
come from donors, and which he
planned to include in the fiscus.
However, he says only less than US$3
million has come through.
Former Economics Minister Elton
Mangoma was also on record
admitting that the rate at which the
country has been receiving new
investments was poor, casting a dark
cloud since it was also hoped that this
could be one of the avenues to re-
energize the economy.
A simple survey by our
correspondents through various
means such as the Zimbabwe Stock
Exchange, the industrial index as well
as commerce and industry bodies
proves that there has been negligible
activity on the front of investments
in old or new ventures over the past
12 months.
“What has happened mostly is the
already existing giants on the market
such as blue chips taking advantage
of the reprieve and better operating
conditions to improve their
operations as well as get back to
former levels of performance,”Peter
Jerere, a Harare-based economic
analyst said. “There have not been
enough opportunities and resources
for those that had totally collapsed
or shut down to revive and bounce
back to operations, and the same
applies in the area of new
investments.”
Although there have been several
inquiries as well as interest
expressed by various foreign interest
in taking up investment
opportunities, our survey shows that
very few have so far moved to
implementation levels, and again,
one of the major effects being the
uncertainty and fragility posed by the
political bickering characterising the

says there are new developments and
insists there have been foreign
investors that have done due
diligence and already embarking on
implementing projects but it was
difficult to obtain specific examples.
We also established that the
manufacturing industry remains
suppressed as the majority of

over the years struggle to re-
capitalise towards revival of
operations.
“There is not the money to use for the
revival of operations. Fine, there is
what you may call stability but the
problem is for you to recapitalise you
need funds and they are difficult to
obtain either on the market or from
elsewhere,” a member of the
Confederation of Zimbabwe
Industries spoke on condition of
anonymity.
As a result of the failure by the
industry to revive productive levels,
the country's GDP levels remain
suppressed, itself remaining one of

continues to import much of its
requirements from basic

equipment and other necessities yet
without much produce, a scenario
that leads to negative growth and

No survivors as Pakistan
plane crash kills 152
An airliner on Wednesday crashed
near the Pakistani capital,
Islamabad, killing all 152 people on
board.
The plane, a domestic flight from
Karachi operated by the private
company Airblue, came down in hills
just north of the city as it was about
to land.
There is no word on the cause of the
crash. At the time the area was
shrouded in fog.

served Zifa with papers demanding
$150 000 compensation for unfair
dismissal on top of other demands.

The post of CEO has since been
created following Mhurushomana's
departure and has been held by
Ndumiso Gumede, Jonathan
Mashingaidze, and current post
holder Henrietta Rushwaya.
Rushwaya confirmed that Zifa have
received correspondence from
Mhurushomana's lawyers and the
association was going to forward the
papers to their legal representatives
for advice.
She added that she was surprised
that the issue had to come up now
when the dismissal happened way
b a c k i n 2 0 0 4 .
Mhurushonama, on the other hand
claims that he has for years been
battling to get his package and other
benefits and has been contesting his
dismissal without getting a proper
response.
He revealed that he will fight until
justice has been done since he feels
he was unfairly dismissed.
The former administration officer is
not the only one who still has to
receive his severance package from
Zifa. Gumede at one time also
enlisted legal representation after
being sacked as CEO.
It could not be established whether
Gumede, who is now Zifa's first vice
president is still pursuing that
avenue.
Jonathan Mashingaidze, who was
also fired as CEO following, a World
Cup ticket scandal in 2006 has been
rehired but in another portfolio
after winning his case for unfair
dismissal.

Some members of the Zifa board have been trying to push for
national soccer team caretaker coach, Norman Mapeza to be
confirmed to a substantive position and given a long term
contract but reportedly facing resistance from others who
believe the former Warriors captain lacks the capacity.
Insiders in the Zifa board revealed to The News Leader that
there are some members within it who have resisted
suggestions to have Mapeza appointed as substantive coach
citing what they believe to be his lack of experience and
capacity at the highest level of international football coaching.
“Some of us have been saying we should just appoint him
(Mapeza) and give him a long-term contract but the board has
remained divided because there are others who believe he lacks
enough experience at the highest level,”a board member said
on condition of anonymity.
Zifa have this week called on prospective candidates to apply
for the position of Warriors coach, putting requirements that
include five 0-Levels and five years experience among others.
That was after announcing that Mapeza would be in charge of
Warriors' forthcoming encounter against Liberia but still on
caretaker basis.
Mapeza has been in charge of the national team on caretaker
basis since the departure of Sunday Chidzambwa, who in now
based in South Africa and the former Monomotapa
championship winning coach, Mapeza has posted good results
by leading the national team to qualifying for the CHAN
championships set for January next year.
Zifa, grappling with the perennial funding problems, have
admitted they lack the funds to hire a foreign coach and are

form of what has been described as
“shocking discoveries of massive
corruption” at the Zimbabwe
Football Association (Zifa).
The News Leader can exclusively
reveal that whilst the attention and
debate has centred on the ongoing
investigations into allegations of
match-fixing as well as shady deals
on Asian tours undertaken in recent
years by the national teams as well as
local clubs, the Zifa board has its
focus higher.
We are in possession of information
indicating that the Cuthbert Dube-
led board has been and still is also
probing what appear to have been
systematic channels through which
proceeds from gate takings during
international matches involving the
national teams as well as clubs in
continental engagements were
siphoned.
We have confirmed with key people
involved in the investigations and

football administration
being implicated and
investigated.
According to information
leaked to us, there are
preliminary indications in
the hands of the Zifa board
that in some international
matches, such as those
involving the Warriors at
home, as much as 25% of
cash raised from ticket sales
would find its way into the
pockets of individuals involved in the
networks as soon as the matches
ended.
The Zifa board has lately been busy
probing allegations of match-fixing
and bribery on several occasions the
national association arranged trips
to Asian countries where national
team outfits played wholly farcical
matches and in most cases suffered
massive defeats. At one point former
champions Monomotapa were sent on
the controversial tours.
Zifa chief executive officer, believed
to have been behind the
arrangement of the trips and
matches, has been suspended by the
association's board to allow
investigations into the alleged
scandals.
Another board member privy to the
investigations said evidence
gathered so far indicates there were
what he described as “serious acts of
corruption”, adding if the
association decides to take the right
decision, almost all the individuals
that at any time were involved in the

officials, technical teams and even
