Sheet Pile Walls

Introduction- Cantilever Sheet Walls

Sheet Pile Walls

Sheet Pile Walls ‫الستائر اللوحية‬

Retained structures to retain water or soil.
• These structures are more flexible and much
thinner than retaining walls
• They may be temporary or permanent
structures.
Materials:
• Timber
• Precast reinforced concrete
• Steel
Sheet Pile Walls

Uses of the Sheet Piles

1. Retain soil in excavations
2. Water Front structures to retain water
3. Earth dams, (decrease piping under dam).

Stability of Excavations Braced Excavations

Sheet Pile Walls

1- Timber
• For shallow excavations: Height of retained soil < 3 m
• Can be last from 10-15 years
• Should be used above the ground water table,
• Used for temporary works like electricity and sewage works
• For permanent use, it should be treated against erosion

3- Steel Sheet Pile Walls

The most used type, it has the following advantages:

1. It resists high driving stresses.

2. It is of relatively light weight.
3. It can be reused several times.
4. It is more durable.
5. It is easy to increase its length by welding
or bolting.

What is meant by Design of sheet Wall ??

1. Calculation of the depth of penetration (D)
2. Calculation of the Section Modulus (z)

Types of Steel Sheet Piles

1.Cantilever sheet piles
2.Anchor sheet piles
3.Strutted (braced ) sheet piles
Sheet Pile Walls

Cantilever Sheet Pile Wall

• They are used for sand or stiff clay soil

• They are driven to adequate depth under
dredge line
• They behave as a cantilever beam
• Sheet pile gain its stability from passive earth
pressure under dredge line in front of wall D

• They have much deflection compared to

anchor type
• Applied for moderate heights, H < 6 m

Design of Cantilever Sheet Pile Walls

Two Cases are studied

1. Backfill sand, penetrated soil sand
2. Backfill clay, penetrated soil is clay

Notes D

• Under dredge line, rotation of sheet pile is

occurred (at point of rotation)
• Net earth peruse should be calculated

Notes

1. For Equilibrium, momoents of active and passive

pressures about any point =0.0
2. 𝑴𝒐 = 𝟎. 𝟎 (point at depth D)
Ea
3. The calculated depth D should be increased by about
20-30% to develop more passive earth pressure, and Ep
to provide erosion.

Sheet Pile Walls

Design steps of cantilever sheet pile wall

1. Calculate the active and passive earth pressure

2. Take moments of active and passive pressure
about the toe point (o), and determine D Ea
3. Take design depth 𝑫𝒅 = 𝟏. 𝟐 − 𝟏. 𝟑 𝑫
Ep dD
4. Assume the point of zero shear at distance x d
from the dredge line, Apply the equation O
𝒇 𝑿 = 𝟎. 𝟎 , 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝑿
5. Calculate the maximum moment ( at point of
zero shear at distance x)

6. Calculate the section modulus 𝒛, 𝒛 =
