Read this manual carefully before installing or operating the device and before carrying out maintenance operations.

1 - SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS – WARNINGS

1.1 – Warnings

ATTENTION! READ THESE WARNINGS BEFORE WORKING WITH THE DEVICE.

1.1.1 – General warnings


- Follow the instructions contained in this manual for all operations relating to installation, use
and maintenance of the device. CEIA cannot be held responsible for any damage resulting
from procedures which are not expressly indicated in this manual, or from any lack of
attention, either partial or total, of the procedures described therein.
- Whenever there is any suggestion that the level of protection has been reduced, the device
should be taken out of service and secured against any possibility of unintentional use, and
authorised service technicians should be called.
The level of protection is considered to have been reduced when:
- the device shows visible signs of deterioration;
- the device does not operate correctly;
- the device has been stored for a long period in sub-optimal conditions;
- the device has suffered severe stress during transport;
- the device has come into contact with corrosive liquids.
- Handle the device with care and without excessive force during installation, use and
maintenance
- This equipment complies with the directive 2004/108/EC for industrial applications

1.1.2 – Installation warnings


- Please contact your supplier if you are not sure how to correctly install or set up the CEIA
RDM Anti-collision system during assembly with regard to aspects that are covered
inadequately, or not all, in this technical documentation or in the respective operating
manuals.

Observe current regulations regarding electrical and personal safety for both the operator and the installer when installing
the device.

- After installation the device should be stable, and not subject to vibration or accidental
movement. All connecting cables should be properly fastened down, in order to avoid knocks
and accidental damage and to obtain optimum performance.
- Before providing the device with electrical power, check that the voltage from the power
mains corresponds to the voltage shown on the device's electrical specifications plaque.
- Only connect the device to the power mains after having made all the connections needed
for its complete installation.
- Observe current regulations regarding electrical and personal safety for both the operator
and the installer when installing the device.
- The device must be connected to a power supply circuit fitted with a switch or other device
which allows the power to be cut off.
- If the device is to be powered via an external autotransformer to regulate the voltage, ensure
that the common terminal of the autotransformer is connected to the neutral of the power-
supply circuit.

- The power-supply plug must only be inserted into a socket fitted with an earth/ground
connection.
Any break in the safety conductor, either inside or outside the device, or disconnection of the
earth/ground safety terminal, will render the device dangerous. Intentional cutting or
disconnection is strictly forbidden.
- This device contains electrical and electronic components, and may therefore be susceptible
to fire. Do not install in explosive atmosphere or in contact with inflammable material. Do not
use water or foam in the case of fire when the device is powered up.
- Avoid fixing the parabola near the structure of the bridge crane, such as principal beams,
beam frames, etc...., which, if they are near the direction of wave propagation, could work as
reflectors. These are the shortest distances at which such structures must be from the axis
of the parabola:
a) 1,5 m up to 20 m. activation
b) 2,0 m up to 30 m. activation
c) 3,5 m up to 60 m. activation
d) 5 m up to 99 m. activation
- When mounting the parabola, make sure that the identification plate is up. Thus insures
correct polarisation of the emitted wave.
- The cable connecting the control unit and the repeater must be at the distance of 20 cm, at
least, from any power lines to the bridge crane; in any case, it is advisable to pass it through
ferrous metal tubes. The same precaution should be taken with the cable connecting the
central unit with the parabola. Do not cut or lengthen these cables.

1.1.3 – Use warnings


- Each intervention distance, set on the RDM, shall be accurately verified to avoid any risk.

1.1.4 – Maintenance warnings


- The device must be disconnected from all power sources before undergoing any
maintenance or cleaning, and before being moved.
- Do not wash the device with liquid detergents or chemical substances. Any cleaning should
be done using a slightly-damp, non-abrasive cloth.
- Read the chapter on “Maintenance” carefully before calling the service centre. Whatever the
problem, only specialised service personnel authorised to work with CEIA equipment should
be called.
- Any damaged parts of the device should be replaced by original components only.
- Any maintenance or repair involving the device being opened while powered should be
avoided as far as possible: if this becomes inevitable, the operation must be carried out only
by qualified personnel who are fully aware of the risks involved.

1.2 – Residual risks


Approvals
The CEIA RDM anti-collision telemeter, in conjunction with the appropriate passive reflectors,
guarantee a high degree of safety throughout the entire system thanks to the precision of the
measurement and to the internal autodiagnosis system.
Your system must be designed and operated so that in the event of a wrong installation, falsified
measurement, device malfunction or a power failure, suitable safety fittings or equipment, e.g. a
redundant design, safety switches, etc., ensure that no damage can occur.
Safety certification in compliance with EN 61508 (EN 954) Category 1, 2, 3 or 4 is always to be
viewed by the owner or plant constructor in conjunction with all the relevant plant components,
such as control units, drive and break systems, power supplies or tachometer generators, etc., and
is to be fulfilled in this entirety. Any required redundancies are to be taken into account accordingly.
The CEIA RDM Anti-collision telemeters bear the CE marking. This means that they conform with
CE regulations in compliance with EU Directive 2004/108/EC, as laid down in EN 61326-1.
The following applicable basic standards are verified and fulfilled in the product standard DIN EN
61326 for Electrical Equipment, Control Systems and Measuring Devices:

2 - DESCRIPTION

2.1 – General description


This manual is addressed to everybody who owns a CEIA Radar Telemeter for Anti-collision
Systems Mod. RDM and who needs detailed information, both about the device itself and about
correct installation procedure.
Our technical department is at our customers' disposal for further information and to look into
individual problems and queries.

2.1.1 – Description
Our anti-collision devices, which are best defined as ‘anti-collision transceivers', were created for
the slowing-down and stopping, or only stopping, of bridge cranes travelling along the same
running plane in order to prevent collision, as required by D.P.R. 547, article 191.
Our Systems give a direct reading of the distance in meters of the bridge crane from a selected
reference point (another bridge crane or the end of the plane where the units run) and they operate
in output on the switching of exchange relays.
Thanks to the use of silicon semiconductors and miniaturised circuits, these Systems offer a high
degree of reliability and may be placed in a single container, thus simplifying installation
enormously.
The electromagnetic waves irradiated by the transmitters, represent no danger to people or objects
thanks to their low power and high directivity, which is a feature of the system.

Operating principle
To control the slowing-down or stopping of a bridge crane, anti-collision devices utilise various
Systems, mechanical, optical or acoustic (through ultrasonic emissions) which points out the
position of the bridge crane .
The features of the detection system largely determine the performance of the device, not only with
regard to its operating precision but also in relation to the conditions under which the device must
work.
For this reason, in this device a micro-wave system has been utilised to provide a remarkable
insensitivity to environmental noises which are usually more frequent in places where bridge
cranes are used.
This system makes use of the emission of an electromagnetic field with variable frequency which,
according to a process of reflection on a target, not very different from the process which makes
navigation radar work, allows the telemetric measurement of the bridge crane's position to be
obtained.
The working diagram of the device is shown below: the signal produced by a centimetric wave
generator, not shown in the figure, is irradiated by an antenna (the parabola) which concentrates
the emissions onto a target (reflector); the energy reflected by the target to the same parabola,
working also as a receiver, provides a signal which allows the distance between the parabola and
the target, t to be measured by calculating the time required by the front of the electromagnetic
wave to reach the target and, after reflection, to return to the emitting parabola.

This time is given by the formula: ∆t = 2 d/c

where d indicates the distance between the parabola and the target and c is the wave propagation
speed, which is known.
It is clear that knowing the value of ∆t, the distance d between the parabola and the reflector can
be easily calculated.
In this type of application, the time ∆t the wave takes to go and to return falls within the range of
30ns and 300 ns.
Since the measurement is referred only depends on the time of the electromagnetic wave
propagation takes to go and return, the device is completely insensitive to any possible
amplitude variations in the received signal, caused by environmental phenomena (vapour,
dust, etc....) which may be present in an industrial environment.
The realisation of a system of this kind that is suitable for industrial use has recently been made
possible by the development of a new generation of highly reliable, small-dimension microwave
components.

2.1.2 – Special features of the system

From the description of the operating principle of the Radar Telemeter for Anti-collision Systems
you will note that it is completely insensitive to wave amplitude variations, since it takes a
measurement of the real time the wave takes to reach the target and to return.

Unlike with optical or ultrasonic Systems any phenomena such as drafts of warm or cold air,
atmospheric or metallic dust, rain or other types of precipitation, which often occur in an industrial
environment, do not compromise the accuracy of measurement.

The automatic coupling device interfaced with both the logic and the receiver makes it possible
to receive the reflected signal perfectly well even under non-optimal operating conditions.

We would emphasise that the use of a metal reflector, or more precisely a completely passive
component, to send back the electromagnetic waves gives the system "intrinsic safety" to
operation; indeed, while other anti-collision equipment needs control returns via radio, carrier
current waves, private lines, etc…, those based on the radar system have no need to check the
operating conditions of adjacent bridge cranes as each unit controls its own working,
autonomously.

A new type of reflector used as a target, of very limited dimensions, makes it possible for the
telemeter to function even with vertical or horizontal misalignment of the crane of ±10%. This
permits quick and easy installation, without critical aiming and greater operating safety.

An internal self diagnosis circuit checks the working of the power supply, the quartz time base,
the modulator, the microwave devices and part of the receiver, insuring the complete stopping of
the bridge crane when one or more of the above parts have failed. Likewise power supply voltages
can be checked visually by means of appropriate luminous LEDs.

The operation of the transmitter and receiver can be tested instantly by activating the output relay
which has a safe-working feature and can be activated only when a useful return signal is detected.
This also prevents the bridge crane from moving when the device is not connected.

The sturdy structure of the parabola, made of 3 mm. steel and of the containers, made of 1 mm.
steel and equipped with a fixing system with shock absorbers, guarantees adequate protection of
the electronic components, resulting in a highly reliable product.

To identify the unit, open the Control Unit and locate the serial
number on the front panel.

2.1.3 – Application fields


Our anti-collision devices, which are best defined as ‘anti-collision transceivers', were created for
the slowing-down and stopping, or only stopping, of bridge cranes travelling along the same
running plane in order to prevent collision, as required by D.P.R. 547, article 191.

2.2 – Correct and Forbidden use of the device

2.3 – Functional diagram


The RDM system is made up of 4 main parts: parabola, reflector, control unit and cab repeater.
The cab repeater is not essential to the working of the device (in fact, it is supplied as optional) but
it permits the operator to check the device and the position of the bridge crane.
The devices are permanently powered by the same network that feeds the bridge crane, taking
energy from the main switch

The picture here above shows the working diagram of the device; in the interests of clarity the inner
working blocks of the control unit and the parabola are identified. They are the nucleus of the
device.
It will be noticed that the parabola is made up of two parts: the cavity containing all the micro-wave
components of the system and the parabolic antenna itself.
In the case of the control unit, we have shown how the various blocks are distributed between the
three cards RDM AL, RDM MC and RDM RX, which contain most of the system's electronic
circuitry. The greater part of the electronic circuits of the system is held in these cards.
The heart of the device is the quartz time base (A) which supplies the commands for transmission,
reception, counting and memorisation of the digitalized data with the aid of a microcomputer.
Block (C) is a microwave generator in the K band, modulated in frequency with law fm(t) through a
signal generated by the block (B).
A small part of the generator signal is sent via the directional coupler (D) to a demodulator-mixer
(G), while the remaining part is directed into the ferrite circulator (F).
The circulator provides the required decoupling between the transmitter and receiver, using the
same antenna (E).
The signal emitted by the parabola reaches the target, is reflected, returns to the antenna and via
the circulator (F) it reaches the mixer (G).
Since the wave emitted at a generic instant t is :

This signal is amplified by block (H) and it is sent to the counting unit (I), which process it and
calculates the time ∆t the wave takes to reach the target and return and therefore the distance of
the target.
In this unit 9 measurements of the distance are made a second; this distance is simultaneously
compared with the values (in meters) of the slowing-down and the stopping distances pre-set on
the unit (L). When the real distance is equal to or less than the pre-programmed values, the
respective relays come into action through block (N). This action remains memorised until the
distance between the bridge cranes again exceeds the threshold values; an eventual over-ride can
be effected by by-passing the relay manually, through a push-button.
In order to prevent collision, when distances have not been pre-selected (for example during
installation) the device itself automatically sends a stop command, when a distance shorter than 5
meters is pointed out; to have cranes closer, under this threshold, a by-pass as mentioned above
should be used.
The information relative to the distance and any stopping or slowing-down actions is transmitted in
series, asynchronously via the interface (M) to a cab receiver (P) equipped with a display and
optical and acoustic monitors so that the operator can, when necessary, check both the distance of
the bridge cranes and the actions taking place.
Block (O), connected to the secondary of the feeding transformer, provides power supply voltages
to the cards and to the cavity. A filter for suppressing disturbances on the network (block (Q),
necessary in the industrial field, is placed between the transformer and block (O).
The output contacts of the relays are also equipped with anti-disturbance filters for the suppression
of any eventual transients that might be caused by the inductive load of the remote control switches
connected to then and generally used for working the bridge crane's translation motor.

With these reflectors a sufficient return signal is assured with an alignment tolerance of ± 10°.

2.4.2 – RDM-RC Cab Repeater


The distance between the bridge cranes, digitalized in
meters by the counting unit, and notification of slowing-
down and stopping operations can be sent, via serial
interface, to a separate unit placed in the operator's
cabin. This unit, denominated RDM-RC, is shown
beside.
On the upper part of the repeater there is a display with
two figures (A), showing the distance in meters
between the bridge cranes. When these cranes get
further away from each other than the range of the
device, two horizontal segments (out of range) will be
visualised on the display.
Below the display there are two LEDs (B) and (C) which
indicate the slowing-down and stopping actions
respectively.
A the same time as the deceleration LED goes into
operation, an intermittent acoustic signal (sound signal
D) is activated and becomes continuous during the
stopping phase. This acoustic signal can be cut out by
switch E.
The connection between the Radar Telemeter for Anti-
collision Systems and the cabin repeater is made by a 4
pole shielded cable supplied by CEIA, with plated
connectors at the ends and with a maximum length of
100 meters.

Strings of data are sent in series asynchronously at a


rate of 9 per second; this transmission speed allows a
real time monitoring of the counting unit.

The decoding of the signals and the relevant displays are controlled by a microcomputer.

- Power supply: 24 Vdc, supplied, through the interface cable, by the Radar Telemeter for
Anti-collision Systems .

3 - INSTALLATION

Before starting any installation operation, read carefully the Safety instructions - Warnings section of this manual.

3.2 – Mechanical installation


3.2.1 – Positioning
The picture below shows the recommended layout of the RDM transceivers. Parabolic antennas P
and reflectors R must be fixed onto the outside of the bridge crane according to the distances
indicated.
The reflector and the parabolic transmitter have to be located at an equal distance from the ends of
the bridge crane. The distance between them should be equal to about a third of the bridge
width, and in any case not less than 5m.
Since the distance between two bridge cranes is controlled by two different devices, one placed on
the first crane and one on the second, in order to avoid interference between the two systems it
could be useful to install RDM devices with different polarisation of the emitted wave: in this way,
placing a vertical polarisation (Pv) system on bridge crane CP1 and a horizontal polarisation
(Ph) system on bridge crane CP2, the possibility the two electromagnetic fields generated by the
two devices influencing each other are affecting the accuracy of the measurement is reduced to the
lowest level. It should, however, be noted that generally, thanks to the high directivity of the
antenna system a reliable operation can be counted upon without this provision.

The picture beside illustrates the example of port


cranes: to avoid flutter, and therefore misalignment
of the parabolic antenna and the reflector, it is
advisable to fix these at an average distance from
the ground.

During mounting, special checks should be made of the solidity of the supporting structure
to avoid dangerous oscillations to the electronic apparatus.

Polarisation of the emitted wave is indicated on the transmitting antenna (parabola) with a mark:
letter V with a green point for the vertical one and letter H, with a red point, for the horizontal one

3.2.4 – Installing Parabola and Reflector

Parabola
To fix the parabolic transmitter and the reflector, weld a steel plate with A

anchor bolts to the beam of the bridge or even to its railing, if suitably
stiff.

The figure beside shows the correct mounting of the parabola. As will
be notified, fixing on the plate is effected by means of bolts with nut
and lock nut to allow changes in parabola orientation

The same technique is used for the reflector.

If for any reason a different system must be used, it is important to avoid tightening the fixing plates of the parabola
directly to a support which is only estimated to be perfectly flat in a first approximation; if this is not checked accurately the
parabola might become distorted during mounting, thus reducing the effective range of detection.
Obviously, no obstacles should be allowed to stand between the parabola and the reflector.

With these reflectors a sufficient return signal is assured with an alignment tolerance of ± 10°.

When mounting the parabola, make sure that the identification plate is up. Thus insures correct polarisation of the
emitted wave.

3.2.5 – Positioning of the RDM/xx-20 electronics unit
In the case of the RDM/xx-20 model, the transmitting antenna is incorporated in the electronics
unit. This must be fixed to the bridge crane as per instructions for other RDM models, but in a
horizontal position, and after checks have been made to ensure that the antenna points towards
the reflector.

3.3 – Electrical installation


3.3.1 – Minimum requirements
See paragraph 2.7 for all technical characteristics.

3.3.2 – Components connection


Connect the parabola (not for RDM/xx-20) to the control unit by plugging in the relative connector.

It is advisable to protect the cable inside a metallic pipe.

The cable connecting the control unit and the repeater must be at the distance of 20 cm, at least,
from any power lines to the bridge crane; in any case, it is advisable to pass it through ferrous
metal tubes. The same precaution should be taken with the cable connecting the central unit with
the parabola.

Do not cut or lengthen these cables.

3.3.4 – RS232 Serial Interface connection


Connect the RDM to the remote computer, using one of the CEIA
cables (available on request) and plug it to the serial port indicated in
the figure.

3.3.5 – Power supply connection

Grounding of the device is carried out by connecting terminal G of each device with the grounding

CAUTION! The use of a mains voltage different from that specified, may damage the equipment.

For different voltages, they must be connected to a transformer supplied by us.


Its input voltage must be equal to the network voltage and the output voltage equal to that required
by the devices.

3.4 – Start-up
3.4.1 – First start-up
In order to ensure the proper functioning, after the first start-up, is recommended to check the
parabola or reflector orientation, following the instructions of the next paragraph.

3.5 - Orientation of parabola and reflector


Alignment is carried out in two consecutive phases.

- In the first one the bridge cranes are set at a distance of a few meters (normally the
minimum survey distance, 5 m.), so that it is easier to estimate the relative location of the
two components of the antenna system. The parabola and reflector are then mounted, care
being taken to ensure that they are in line and that any misalignment does not exceed ± 20
cm in any direction, measured at their respective axes. The reflector must be installed with
the fixing plate (fig. A2) in the vertical position.

This operation has to be carried out with the utmost care in order to achieve the best alignment possible.

- In the second phase the bridge cranes are
moved to a position equal to about at half of the
maximum range (15m for RDM/XX-30 models
or 30m for RDM/XX-60 models). The position of
the parabola can then be altered, using the
fixing nuts and lock nuts, so as to achieve the
best alignment.
This operation is easy thanks to a red led on
the back of the parabola, whose luminous
intensity is proportional to the amplitude of the
received signal: the brighter the light, the better
the alignment.

A similar indication is provided on the control panel of the threshold 2 display. In this case, in order
to enter into the measuring mode, the equipment must be turned on while holding down the "+"
button of the intervention threshold 2. The display will show a number between 00 and 99 which
is proportional to the amplitude of the signal.
Adjust the position of the parabola, by means of the fixing nuts so as to achieve the maximum
signal amplitude and, in any case, a value not lower than 6.0.

For an ideal calibration, the position of the parabola should be slightly corrected after the distance between the two bridge
cranes has been brought to the maximum measuring distance.

When these procedures are finished, turn the device off and turn it back on.

No special adjustment is required for the reflector, since its position is not critical for alignment.
After this calibration, the bridge cranes, while working, can vary up to ±1,5° in alignment ° (6° in
the case of model RDM/xx-20) without affecting the proper working of the device, even at the
maximum preselected distance.

Avoid fixing the parabola near the structure of the bridge crane, such as principal beams, beam
frames, etc...., which, if they are near the direction of wave propagation, could work as reflectors.
These are the shortest distances at which such structures must be from the axis of the parabola:
a) 1,5 m up to 20 m. activation
b) 2,0 m up to 30 m. activation
c) 3,5 m up to 60 m. activation
d) 5 m up to 99 m. activation

4.4 – Use of the device


The device's function change according to the two Models RDM/1S and RDM/2S.
The former only features the possibility of stopping the bridge crane, while the latter offers both
stopping and slowing-down by means of rotor resistances.

- Model RDM/1S : This device is equipped with an output relay to stop the bridge crane,
which is stopping is determined by the interruption of the excitation current of the remote
control operating switch. This interruption occurs when the switching contact of the relay
opens the 1-0 connection to which the remote control command circuit is connected
normally.

- Model RDM/2S : This device is equipped with two output relays, for slowing-down and for
stopping the bridge crane. Slowing-down is effected by the interruption, through terminals A-
B, of the remote control switch excitation current by the partial or total insertion of rotor
resistors. Stopping is determined by the interruption of the excitation current to the remote
control operating switch when the switching contact of the relay opens the 1-0 connection ,
to which the remote control command circuit is connected normally.

Adjusting the intervention distance


The setting of the intervention distance, for threshold 1 and threshold 2, is made by means of the
"+" and "-" buttons located on the central electronics unit in the correspondent section. The number
shown by the display is the distance in metres between the antenna and the reflector.

- On the RDM/1S model, threshold 1 is not available and only threshold 2 is selected for the
stopping of the bridge crane.
- On the RDM/2S model, threshold 1 is used to slow down the bridge crane, while threshold 2
is used for the stopping of the crane.

The speed of movement of the bridge cranes does not affect the intervention threshold.

NOTE
The two intervention thresholds are independent: it is possible to interchange them or, depending
on the specific application, it is also possible to attribute them with a meaning that is different from
the standard meaning, though it should be born in mind that, in the event of self-diagnosis, the
relays will be set in anomalous conditions:

- the slowing relay is forced into the normal position (as if the distance exceeded the slowing-
down threshold)
- the stopping relay is forced into the alarm position (as if the distance was less than the
stopping threshold)

Stopping of more than one bridge crane using mod. RDM/1S


To stop two bridge cranes travelling on the same plane two RDM/1S devices, marked by letters A
and B, are used; device A is set up on one bridge crane and device B on the other, as shown
below.
It should be remembered that, to guarantee efficient, reliable operation, two devices with different
polarisation are required (see paragraph 3.2.1).

When there are more than two bridge cranes on the same track, the device must be positioned as
shown here below:

When there is only one bridge crane on the track, the device must be positioned as shown in the
following picture.

Slowing-down and stopping of one or more bridge cranes using through model RDM/2S
Mod. RDM/2S has two tripping thresholds, one for slowing-down and the other for stopping the
bridge crane.
These devices are therefore used on high speed bridge cranes requiring a slowing down action,
equipped with rotor resistors or other deceleration equipment.

Positioning of the devices is similar to the previous example.

4.4.1 – Start
Open the control unit cover and light on the main switch. The RDM is immediately operative.

4.4.2 – Standard operation

The setting of the intervention distance is made by means of the and buttons located on
the central electronics unit.

The number shown by the display is the distance in metres between the antenna and the reflector.
If this distance is greater than the intervention thresholds selected, the relaitve lights come on and
the output relays are activated (contacts 1-0 and A-B connected).
In the event that the distance between the antenna and the reflector becomes less than one of the
two threshold settings selected, the respective display light blinks, the intervention light turns off
and the output relay switches over.

4.4.3 – Doppler operation


Via this special operating mode the RDM system allows the bridge cranes to be moved closer to
each other than the stop threshold:

- The tripping of the stop relay depends on the relative speeds of the cranes, not on their
distance (this type of operation is denoted by the letters “Ad” (Doppler radar), whilst normal
mode is shown by “AL” (Altimetric radar)
- The stopping distance selector is set to the distance at which the operator wishes to pass
from normal-speed movement to low speed.
- Above this threshold, operation is identical to that of the standard version: the slowing relay
is activated at the selected distance, as does the stop relay (for bridge crane speeds in
excess of 50 cm/s).
- Below this threshold, the device allows movement of the bridge cranes but imposes a
maximum speed of 50 cm/s, so that any contact can easily be absorbed by the bumpers. If
the speed exceeds this threshold, the stop relay is activated. The bridge crane can then start
moving again, but must move slower than 50 cm/s.
- if the distance between the cranes goes below 4 metres, it is not shown on the RDM
electronics unit (the standard limit for normal operation of 4m is shown).

Activation of Doppler operation

the unit is not operational.

Press THRESHOLD 2 once to change the mode from


Altimetric (AL) to Doppler (Ad).

Press THRESHOLD 1 to confirm the change.


Switch the RDM unit off and on again: the unit becomes
operational again, and will function in Doppler mode.

To return to standard operation, repeat the above procedure but select the AL (altimetric) mode.

4.5 – Remote control
The RDM system allows a remote reading of its data, through a serial connection. Follow the
instructions on paragraph 3.3.6 to connect the device to a terminal.

4.5.1 - Commands available


ME (single reading)
This command reports the measured distance between the reflector and the parabola, and all
informations about selfdiagnosis messages and relais status.

Send the command to the RDM typing ME and >ME


pressing Enter. All RDM/2S-xx will answer as in

5 - MAINTENANCE
Before performing any maintenance operation on the device, read carefully the Safety instructions - Warnings section
of this manual.

5.1 – Periodical maintenance


The RDM system does not need any periodical maintenance.

5.2 – Troubleshooting
The device is equipped with a self-diagnostic system which
guides the intervention operations in the event of a
breakdown. In such a case, a message blinks on the display
corresponding to the distance measured, according to the
following table.

5.3 – Replacing the parabola


- Disconnect the parabola from the Control Unit and remove it from its position on the bridge
crane.
- Install the new parabola, following the instructions on paragraph 3.2.4.
- Calibrate the new parabola with the RDM Control Unit , following the instructions on next
paragraph.

5.3.1 – Calibrating the RDM Control Unit with the parabola

Be sure that the parabola is disconnected from the RDM unit.


Switch the unit on and …

… press the following keys in sequence within 10 seconds.

The display will show the following:

Open the back of the parabola and check inside for a small
round label, reporting a voltage value (for example 5V).
Remember this value.

THRESHOLD 2 display shows 14.
Move carefully the bridge crane until parabola and reflector will
be positioned at a distance of 14 meters.
When done, press THRESHOLD 1 to confirm.

The RDM is calibrating the distance. The two dots of ACTUAL


DISTANCE display, will blink for a few seconds. . .

During all calibrating procedure for threshold 1 the


two bridge cranes SHALL hold their positions.

When the two dots stops to blink, the threshold 1 is calibrated


and it is possible to calibrate threshold 2.
Press THRESHOLD 1 to start. The displays will be as
shown beside.

Move carefully the bridge crane until parabola and reflector will
be positioned at a distance of 25 meters.
Press THRESHOLD 1 to start.

The RDM is calibrating the distance. The two dots of ACTUAL


DISTANCE display, will blink for a few seconds. . .

During all calibrating procedure for threshold 2 the


two bridge cranes SHALL hold their positions.

Switch off the RDM unit. The RDM unit is now calibrated with
the new parabola.
