Abstract—Voice Controlled Home Automation is a very useful project for adults and
physically disabled persons, who are not able to do various activities efficiently when they
are at home and need one’s assistant to perform those tasks. With Voice Recognition the
complication of wiring in case of wired automation is prevented. With the use of Voice
Controlled Home Automation considerable amount of power saving is possible and it is
flexible and compatible with future technologies so it can be easily customized for
individual requirements. Voice recognition system provides secure access to home. In the
recent years, Home Automation systems have seen rapid changes due to introduction of
various wireless technologies. Home Automation industry is growing rapidly, this is fuelled
by the need to provide supporting systems that are made to ease our life. Automation
systems is supposed to be implemented in existing home environments, without any
changes in the infrastructure. The automation is based on recognition of voice commands
and uses a microcontroller. This paper presents the overall design of ‘Voice Controlled
Home Automation’, which we are currently developing. The automation recognizes voice
commands given by the user and transfers it to our microcontroller which detects the voice
command and proceeds with the switching accordingly. We are using Raspberry Pi
microcontroller module to implement our vision. Further we are trying to implement the
same on a more user friendly and bigger scale. The home automation system is intended to
control all lights and electrical appliances in a home or office using voice commands

I. INTRODUCTION
Automation is a trending topic in the 21st century making it play an important role in our
daily lives. The main attraction of any automated system is reducing human labor, effort,
time and errors due to human negligence. With the development of modern technology,
automation has become a necessity for everyone. Applications are being developed on
Raspberry Pi‟s that are useful to us in various ways. Another upcoming technology is natural
language processing which enables us to command and control things with our voice.
Combining all of these, our paper presents a micro controller based voice controlled home
automation system. Such a system will enable users to have control over every appliance in
his/her home with their voice. All that the user needs is a control circuit.

Description: This paper enlightens upon the invention as well as technological

advancement in the field of voice recognition and also focuses upon different steps
involved for speaker identification using MATLAB Programming. Voice controlled
wireless smart home system has been presented for elderly and disabled people. The
proposed system has two main components namely (a) voice recognition system, and
(b) wireless system. Each home load will be having two commands ON and OFF
commands. Automation of 2 loads such as fan and light has been tested by giving 4
voice commands through personal computer. When user creates his own profile and
automates the load speech recognition accuracy of more than 90% is achieved. Other
people who were allowed to automate the load by the user can use user profile and
achieve a speech recognition accuracy of 75% in the same personal computer.

2. Voice Controlled Home Automation: Special Issue on 3rd International Conference on

Electronics & Computing Technologies-2016 Conference Held at K.C. College of
Engineering & Management Studies & Research, Maharashtra, India

Description: This project is based on recognition of voice commands and uses Bluetooth
modules along with microcontroller. This paper presents the overall design of „Voice
Controlled Home Automation‟, which we are currently developing. The automation
recognizes voice commands given by the user and transfers it to a microcontroller which
detects the voice command and proceeds with the switching accordingly. It uses Raspberry Pi
microcontroller module & Bluetooth module HC05 to implement the project. The home
automation system is intended to control all lights and electrical appliances in a home or
office using voice command.

III. PROPOSED SYSTEM

The proposed solution to the problem statement includes a voice controlled system that will
enable users to control basic level home automation. The system includes a Raspberry Pi
whose GPIO pins will be used to transfer signals to a controller based on voice commands
filtered by the Raspberry Pi‟s module. System will enable users to have control over every
appliance in his/her home with their voice. The control circuit consists of a Raspberry Pi,
which processes the user commands and controls the switching of devices. The connection
between the Raspberry Pi and the controller is established via inter-connection. Using this
effective yet ingrained form of communication we would humanize technology to a great
extent. Voice controlled House Automation System deploys the use of voice to control
devices. The advantages of using voice as an interfacing medium are multifold. Firstly we
would do away with or significantly decrease the need of training for operating technology.
Secondly, the simplification of services would entail a wider adoption of existing technology
and would help people with varied disabilities access the same technology. Voice controlled
House Automation System leverages the power of Raspberry Pi to provide a holistic voice
controlled automation system.

IV. DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

Our System will use a mic or a webcam to provide input to a Raspberry Pi. This voice input
will be processed in the Raspberry Pi. User will have to speak their command. This command
would have to be preceded by a keyword specified by them. This command would then be
analysed in the Raspberry Pi. Depending on the command, a signal will be sent to an
appropriate GPIO pin on the Raspberry Pi. This signal would then go from the GPIO pin to a
remote controller which will wirelessly control the specified appliance. After receiving the
command as well as after completing it, an audio acknowledgement will be given to the user.

Design of the System

V. CONCLUSION
This application will help the user to set a particular keyword which when spoken followed
by a command will execute the desired command. The AI present in the hardware will
politely ask the user to speak the command after the keyword and will execute the command
with audio acknowledgement.
