ast year was the ‘best ever’ for new mum Katie Piper and it looks like this one will
be equally as good as she plans to tie the knot with her long-term boyfriend.
James, a carpenter, popped the question in early December and much to Katie’s
delight the couple intend to get married sooner rather than later.
‘There are no definite plans and we haven’t set an exact date, but I don’t think it’s going
to be a long engagement, so we may as well get going,’ says 31-year-old Katie.
Most of the couple’s wedding plans will focus on their 10-month-old daughter Belle
Elizabeth who will walk her mummy down the aisle. ‘We’ve been watching her trying to
stand up and walk and it would be great if she could walk down the aisle,’ says Katie.
‘Belle’s part of a whole new world I never thought would be accessible and knowing
we’re going to be a full family unit has really made my life complete.’
TWITTER TROLLS TAUNTED HER BABY
Currently seen on TV as the presenter of C4’s Bodyshockers, Katie believed her dreams of
having a family were shattered when, aged 24, an ex-boyfriend paid another man to throw
acid in her face in a sick revenge attack. She was left in agony, blinded in one eye and
needing many operations to rebuild her face.
While she’s become an inspiration by setting up the Katie Piper Foundation to help
other people living with burns and scars, the former model unsurprisingly still suffers
anxiety from the 2008 attack.
And the experience has heightened how protective she is of her little girl.
‘When strangers approach me for a picture or chat when
I’m out with her I get nervous because of the attack. I try hard
not to show it as I don’t want Belle to be affected by my anxiety
over something from the past. But it’s definitely made me more
protective,’ she says.
Katie also intends to keep Belle out of the limelight because
she knows all too well how cruel people can be.
‘When Belle was born people tweeted terrible things like
“she’s as ugly as her mum”, and I don’t want her to have that
when she goes to school,’ adds Katie.
LOSING THE BABY WEIGHT
Katie also admits she still suffers anxiety over how she looks,
especially when meeting new people.
After giving birth, there were moments when Katie didn’t
feel attractive – and going to mother and baby classes brought
back all her insecurities as she thought people might stare.

Yet Rita Ora falls apart in
Saturday’s episode of The Voice after
meeting a 20-year-old singer.
Rita, who made her Voice debut as
a coach in last Saturday’s premiere
episode, gets all emotional this week
after discovering that ‘blind audition’
contestant Tom Carpenter sings
despite battling Tourette Syndrome.
Wedding singer and DJ Tom, 20,
won the respect of the judges after
telling them how performing helps
him cope with his neurological
condition, which sees him suffer
uncontrollable verbal and facial tics.
It’s the same condition as Big Brother
2006 winner Pete Bennett – but
without the swearing.
Rita, 24, gets particularly overcome
by Tom’s performance of Justin
Timberlake’s swing song Suit & Tie
after he reveals that his Tourette’s –
as well as his obsession with swing
music – meant he was targeted by
bullies at school.

Bow tie-wearing Tom, who lives
with his parents and girlfriend Emily
in Frome, Somerset, discovered he
had Tourette’s aged 12, just weeks
after he began performing on stage.
He recalls: ‘It was hard to take at
first but also a relief to know what I’d
got and I take measures to manage it.’
Tom says it was his DJ dad who
has helped him cope, making him
determined to overcome his struggle
with the condition.
‘When I was first diagnosed with
Tourette’s, Dad said, “Don’t worry,
look at it as an opportunity and get
on with it.” My parents and I don’t
believe in taking drugs to control it,’
he explains. ‘Singing is the only thing
that helps. Since being diagnosed, the
only thing I can do is go on stage. It
helps me get through life.
‘I have made sure Tourette’s has not
held me back – I would never let it do
that. I’m happy with my life.’
Tom, who sings at Tourette
Syndrome charity events, said he
wanted to find success to prove
people with the condition can lead
a normal life.
‘I would like to be an artist in my
own right,’ he explains. ‘I’d like to
prove to people who have doubted
me or people with Tourette’s that,
no matter what your goals are, you
can still achieve what you want to
achieve. This is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity and I’m going to enjoy
every minute of it. These four people
could change my life.’
Unfortunately for Tom, though, his
performance doesn’t go quite to plan.
In Saturday’s show, he confides to
the coaches: ‘I missed out a bit at the
end. I added it in today and it didn’t
work out. I was trying to rethink
things in my head and lost it a little.
Performing for you guys is quite a big
thing for me.’

But the four coaches are still
impressed with his talents. Coach Ricky
comments: ‘You are a good-looking lad,
Tom, and you can sing swing.’
While will.i.am enthuses: ‘I think you
are going to be freakin’ awesome. You
are cute and 20 years old and your age
group don’t really do swing.’

music when he was five years old and

In the dramatic teaser, Kim Kardashian

telling her she isn’t pregnant.
Back in September, reality TV star Kim
admitted that she and husband of nine
months, Kanye West, 37, have been trying
to conceive a sibling for daughter North,
who is two in June. ‘We’re trying, I guess,
it’s all in God’s hands,’ she confessed.
Sister Khloé, 30, who also struggled
to fall pregnant with ex-husband Lamar
Odom, is seen in the clip poking fun
at Kim for having sex at every possible
opportunity – even in a toilet during a
photoshoot – in a bid to fall pregnant.

but he just doesn’t feel it’s right for him.

own biological children and that’s the end

Kim openly struggled to fall pregnant
with North, admitting she was a ‘miracle
baby’ after three specialists told her she
had no hope.
But with plans for a big family just
like the one she grew up in (Kim has a
whopping seven siblings) she’s now looking
seriously into adoption which is an idea
she’s toyed with before.
HE’S CLOSED-MINDED
Kim was seen visiting a Thai orphanage
last April and fell head over heels for an
orphan named Pink, a victim of the 2004
Boxing Day tsunami. Kim said: ‘I literally
cannot stop thinking about her. I told
Kanye, I was like, honestly, this girl is so
sweet and so cute, like, I would honestly
adopt her.’
But Kanye could be resisting because he
thinks Kim is giving up all too easily on

through another difficult pregnancy.’

Kim admitted she found carrying a child
difficult, especially her weight gain – saying:
‘I wouldn’t really wish that on anyone.’
‘Kanye did eventually apologise for
saying that but it was pretty intense
between them,’ says the insider.
‘They have made up but Kanye didn’t
back down on the adoption front. He
refuses to give up and has said they’ll try
IVF and surrogacy over adoption.

Instagram, seemingly eager to prove all is well once again.
After posting a pic of her and Dan with friends on Instagram
captioned ‘Christmas Day love’, Jacqueline joined Dan in
Liverpool over new year, where they were pictured together for
the first time since 11 November.

situation, Katy’s said to be torn between
the two men, creating more drama.
‘John’s been chipping away at Katy
for months, begging her to give things
another try,’ a source says. ‘At first she
was strong and held firm, partly because
of her feelings for Diplo but also because
she’s terrified of having her heart broken

‘But the fact is that he has a magnetism

he credits had barely started rolling
when fans turned to social media in
their droves to celebrate the intriguing
return of the BAFTA award-winning ITV
crime drama Broadchurch last week.
An audience of eight million tuned in to see
how the shattered lives of bereaved parents Beth
and Mark Latimer (played by Jodie Whittaker
and Andrew Buchan) had progressed since
discovering the shocking identity of their son’s
killer, and they weren’t disappointed.
‘To say Broadchurch is really draining to film
sounds negative, but it’s pretty epic for us all,
particularly for me and Andy playing grieving
parents,’ says Jodie, as she reflects on the
demands of such an intense storyline. ‘But it’s
wonderful, I love the job and I love working with
everyone. It’s such a family.’
LIGHTENING THE MOOD
So when the cameras stop rolling, Jodie and her
co-stars – who include former Doctor Who star
David Tennant and Peep Show’s Olivia Colman –
are crying out for some light relief.
‘There’s a lot of banter on set,’ says Jodie, 33,
in her broad Yorkshire brogue. ‘Andy Buchan
[Mark Latimer] is one of the funniest people I’ve
ever met. Who knew? He’s absolutely hilarious.
He’s got naturally funny bones. None of us are
method actors so we all, in between takes, have
a similar need to make each other smile. And we
genuinely love hanging out together, especially in
really beautiful places on location in Dorset.’
While fans and critics alike are impressed
so far, the question now is whether the second
series can sustain the same levels of intrigue and
suspense as the first. And key to that is keeping
the ending a closely-guarded secret.
‘Viewers loved the last series because there
weren’t any spoilers. It’s awful if you’re working
your a**e off in a field and there’s a line of
paparazzi climbing up trees trying to ruin it.
And who is it for? Viewers are too intelligent to
want to be spoon-fed something ahead of time,’
explains Jodie.
‘The whole point of Broadchurch’s success
is that people don’t know which direction it’s
going to go in. We live in an age where there

are spoilers everywhere, to try to give viewers
maximum hooks. But Broadchurch proves that
you don’t have to do that to be successful.’
‘I HATED THE BUMP!’
Series two returned to find Beth heavily
pregnant, yet it certainly didn’t give Jodie –
who’s been married to American actor Christian
Contreras since 2008 – a taste for motherhood:
‘It was pretty hot so I was happy to hand back
the fake bump at the end of the day. I’m certainly
not nicking that costume at the end of the job!’
The only thing Jodie ‘nicked’ at the end of the
last series was a pair of trainers, following all
her running scenes. Fortunately, they’ve come in
handy, as her love of exercise is one trait Jodie
shares with her character. As well as squash and
long-distance running, Jodie is a fan of boxing!
‘The difficulty with that, when you’re an actor, is
that you’re sparring with someone who can’t hit
you back,’ she says, referring to the need to keep
her face free of cuts and bruises.
‘I’m just a scrawny-armed lass and I thought
I’d love to do it. I did it for six months and
thought it was going to kill me – it was the hardest
thing I’ve ever done. But I was the fittest and
healthiest I’ve ever been.
‘Then I did Bikram yoga for a year. The
first few times you go, you can’t understand
why you’d ever go back. But I’m faddy. That’s
probably why I failed most of my GCSEs –
because I’m interested for a very short amount of
time, then I jump on to the next thing.’
TEMPER TANTRUMS
Jodie is full of surprises and she finds the common
misconceptions about her quite funny.
‘I think most people probably see me as quite
vulnerable, but I’m not,’ she says. ‘I’m quite
aggressive. I’ve got a short temper and I can be a
stroppy little s**t!
‘Andy would say that on set I’m a miserable
cow in the morning, which is fair! Everyone else
is chatting away in the make-up truck and I’m
sat there traumatised by the early start. But once
I’m awake, there’s no shutting me up!’

jail sentence,’ says Donna.
But the fraud local service leader is
quick to point out that the majority of
people who receive benefits are deserving
of a helping hand. ‘Most of our claimants
are completely honest. Less than one per
cent of spending on welfare is money lost
to fraud,’ she says.
Though Donna has worked for the
Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)
for 24 years, she joined the fraud unit in
2009. During that time, she has handled
some rather high-profile cases of ‘living
together fraud’.
In 2012, Jean Ahmed came to Donna’s
attention after a tip-off via the DWP
website said the mother-of-four from
South Shields had been living with her
partner for 16 years. An investigation
revealed that

Lynn said they had split, but when they
reconciled in 2008 she didn’t declare it
because she was up to her eyes in debt.’
In September, Lynn was found guilty of
falsely claiming nearly £50,000, narrowly
escaping a prison term with a 12-month
sentence, suspended for two years.
In both the Lynn Harrison and Jean
Ahmed cases, public tip-offs were crucial
in bringing their scams to attention.
‘We’re always looking for the public to
help us in the fight against benefit fraud.

Davina McCall’s new year fitness DVDs are almost as much of an institution as the Queen’s speech on Christmas RATING
Day. But this year she has a new trainer and has updated her fitness approach.
Here she offers seven workouts, each lasting seven minutes. They are based on the latest scientific approach
which proves short, high-intensity sessions can burn more calories both during and after exercise than long workouts.
Sessions include Tone & Sculpt and Advanced Abs, as well as a fitness challenge at the end of seven exercises, each
performed for one minute. All are simple to follow, and many body movements are repeated which is both good and bad
– you’re more likely to perform them correctly but also likely to get bored more quickly.

hen I was 17, I never
imagined anything could go
wrong with my body.
I loved sport – particularly
weightlifting – didn’t drink or smoke and
ate a balanced diet. I was healthy and busy
with my new full-time job as a bookkeeper.
But within the space of a few months I’d
become a different person. It was like my
body had been zapped of every ounce of
energy. I was so exhausted I often went to
bed the minute I got home and my social
life became non-existent.
At the same time my right leg became
increasingly sore and I began waking in
the night due to searing pain in my knee.
I put it down to heels I wore for work, or
I’d been working too hard in the gym.
One morning after Christmas in
2006, I woke up to find my right leg
had ballooned. It was huge, red, and
excruciatingly sore to touch. A locum GP
suggested it could be deep vein thrombosis
and sent me for some blood tests, which
came back clear. A week later, when
the swelling still hadn’t gone down, he
suggested it could be shin splints. There
was no treatment, just taking regular
painkillers and avoiding exercise.

However, the symptoms didn’t go away
and by February 2007 I couldn’t straighten
my leg or put weight on it. Finally I was
referred to an orthopaedic specialist for
X-rays. Straight after, I was whisked up to
a ward where I was finally told the cause
of all my pain – a tumour in my right leg.
Shock and fear ran through me. But
even worse was the week-long wait I faced
before tests could show if it was cancerous
or not. Those seven days were the longest
of my life and, though I knew I shouldn’t,
I couldn’t help but google my symptoms.
It sounds crazy now, but I didn’t think
teenagers could get cancer. I thought kids
got leukaemia and adults got various types
of cancer, but not teens. But then I learnt
bone cancer is the third biggest killer of
teenagers and I was terrified.
In hospital, the doctor took a deep
breath and told me I had sarcoma – a rare
cancer. My parents sobbed as he explained
my hair would fall out, I might not be able
to have children and there was a chance
I could die. At that moment, it felt hopeless.
The tumour was huge, measuring
30cm in length. It had savaged pretty
much my entire femur and consumed my
knee to the point where it was completely
immobile. I needed nine months of
intensive chemotherapy, as well as limb
salvage surgery, where they would remove
the cancerous femur and knee joint and
replace it with a metal prosthesis.
The chemo started on Valentine’s
Day 2007 in
six three-
week cycles,
which left me
in bits. With
my immune
system so low
I got severe
infections
between each
cycle. I barely
left hospital.
I developed
removed. The recovery was gruelling as
each bout of chemo floored me, leaving
little energy for the daily physiotherapy
sessions I needed to learn to walk again.
Through all this I had to stay positive. By
September I was home and went straight
back to work, while doctors put me on a
drug trial for Interferon to try to minimise
the chance of cancer returning.
During my treatment, I found a lot of
information on osteosarcoma through the
Bone Cancer Research Trust and Teenage
Cancer Trust, so I knew that I only had
a 50 per cent chance of survival over five
years. I was willing to try anything and
with each monthly check, I was relieved to
hear the cancer hadn’t come back.
Then, right when I least expected it,
in December 2008, I discovered I was
pregnant. My then boyfriend and I were
beyond shocked and overjoyed. It wasn’t
something we’d thought would happen
after what I’d been through.
That euphoria disappeared when I was
told there was a very high chance our baby
could be severely disabled or deformed due
to the Interferon and I was advised to have
a termination, but I refused.
Luckily I listened to my instincts, and
on 24 July 2009 I gave birth to a healthy
7lb 5oz boy. Dexter is five now and there’s
not a day when he doesn’t inspire me.
Four years ago I met my fiancé Stephen,
32, and we’re expecting a brother or sister
for Dexter in April – another miracle.
I am reminded daily about my battle
with cancer though. My leg suffered severe
nerve damage so I still rely heavily on my
crutches and the chemo has left me with
fatigue. I can’t help but think that if I’d had
an X-ray when I first developed symptoms,
would I be suffering to this extent now?
I made and lost friends on the teenage
cancer ward and my wish is that more
young people are made aware of this
deadly disease and get diagnosed earlier.
Every time I look into Dexter’s eyes,
I know that I’m one of the lucky ones.’

Alexandra Jenkins
never imagined her fantasy
would become a reality.
The shop assistant has
transformed herself into a
real-life princess after being
compared to Princess Elsa
from the smash hit Disney
movie Frozen.
With long blonde hair, big
blue eyes and a button nose,
Alexandra is the spitting image of
the animated heroine.
The 20-year-old is regularly
‘recognised’ by children and their
parents who are stunned by her
similarity to Elsa. Many come up
to her while she’s at work in the
children’s section of John Lewis.
Alexandra’s resemblance to
Elsa is so uncanny she decided
to launch a career as a lookalike,
making appearances at children’s
parties and corporate events up
to four times a week.
‘It all took off in January
last year,’ says Alexandra
from Portbury, near Bristol.
‘A few people noticed I looked
similar to Princess
Elsa and then it just
escalated from there.
‘In the summer, a lot
of kids came into the
store to get their back-
to-school stuff and
it went crazy. It was
like some children
thought I was the real
thing. By December
it was non-stop!

With such a busy schedule,
it’s a good job it doesn’t take her
long to transform herself. ‘My
hair’s the same as Elsa’s so I don’t
wear a wig – it makes it more
believable,’ she says.
‘It takes me no longer than half
an hour to transform into Elsa. I
just put on my dress, put my hair
in a plait and apply some purple
eyeshadow. Then I put on my
sparkly dress and cape, and that’s
it – princess perfection!’
Alexandra’s still in shock at
how popular she’s become: ‘I’ve
had a great reaction. It helps that
I genuinely look like Elsa. People
always stop me in the street now,
I can’t seem to be Alex any more.’
The single shop worker was
even offered the coveted role of
Elsa at Disneyland Paris. Though
Alexandra turned it down, she
remains dedicated and makes
her own Elsa costumes as well as
taking singing lessons to belt out
the film’s powerful tunes.
She says: ‘I’m having lessons
at the moment so I can perfect
Let It Go. With the role you get a
lot of kids requesting you to sing
it and I don’t want to let them
down. I love seeing how happy it
makes them.
‘It’s so flattering to be
compared to such a popular
character. I can’t believe how
much it’s taken off and when
people constantly call me Elsa,
I feel like the real deal.’

you’ve hurt yourself, it may reduce the pain.
In one study, volunteers put a hand in a tub of
freezing water and kept it there while repeating
a swear word of their choice. Then they did
it again without swearing. When they were
swearing, they could take the pain for 40 seconds
longer. The pleasure of shouting shocking words
seems to take your mind off the pain, but it works
best if you use them sparingly. But if you’re
someone who swears all the time, it’ll make no
difference if you swear when you hit your head
on a low door frame.

But it seems the singer has finally succeeded in
losing and keeping off the weight, recently being
pictured shopping looking slender and healthy.
The mother-of-two revealed last year that she
was losing weight in a bid to conceive another baby
with husband Reece Hill. And it appears the healthy
weight loss has helped her kick the yo-yoing habit.
Claire, 37, is taking part in new ITV show Get Your
Act Together, which sees celebrities battle it out to
learn different circus skills.
‘Claire is determined to keep the weight off this
time, not just for her but for her growing family,’
says a source. ‘There’s the added advantage of being
able to show off that new figure on TV.
‘She’s fed up with being on an emotional
rollercoaster about her weight. She is
now eating healthily and adamant she will
continue that lifestyle. She’s annoyed that
her weight has defined her. This show will
help her reinvent herself.’

Emerald: I had to practise with the
clamps for hours in front of the TV
because they’re quite complicated to
use. You don’t want them pinging off in
someone’s eye. If I had to deliver a baby
in real life, I’d be a danger to society, but
the scenes are so realistic. My mother
thought we actually delivered real babies
from real pregnant mothers!
Charlotte: I forced myself to watch a
medical video while also watching the
Glastonbury music festival highlights. It
was horrible because not only was I not

Emerald: Some of the episodes are really
harrowing. In the read-throughs, we all
cry. Sometimes we run out of tissues
because we’re sobbing so much.

Helen: Sister Monica Joan, because she
eats cake all day long.
Emerald: Trixie is so much fun and
her clothes are sublime. But then Sister
Evangelina is amazing – she’s a real
ballbreaker. There are a lot of women on
the series so it’s quite an intimidating
bunch. The male cast are a bit terrified,
and they should be!
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR
MIDWIFE COSTUMES?
Charlotte: The uniform is very restricting.
You have to stand up straight otherwise
you get strangled. My character Barbara’s
hair takes a lot of work, too. It gets blow-
dried, then backcombed, so I look like
Edward Scissorhands. Then it goes back
down again like a sleek snail shell.
