Ballet Test Study Guide

Please be able to spell, define, and recognize the body facings explained below
during demonstration either a terre or en l’air:

 à la quatrième – to the fourth/the working leg is extends toward 4th position either
à terre or en l’air and either front or back

 croisé – crossed/legs looks crossed from the front or back either in 5th position or
with an extended leg à terre or en l’air

 effacé – shaded/when in 5th position or leg extended, à terre or en l’air,

the top leg is shading the standing leg or the working leg casts a shadow onto the
standing leg, or this body facing can be referred to as:
ouvert – open/may be used instead of effacé/the opposite of croisé

 à la seconde* – the working leg is extended toward 2nd position either à terre or en
l’air/the body facing is assumed to be en face

 écarté – wide apart or separated/the working leg is extended toward a corner in 2nd
position either à terre or en l’air
(the hard “c” in écarté and corner is a good way to remember the direction)

 en face /de face – facing front

 facing de côté - facing the side (right or left); the body will be profile to the
audience

Directions
 devant – stationary/front
 en avant – traveling/while traveling forward
 derrière – stationary/back
 en arrière – traveling/while traveling backward
 de côté – traveling side
 à la seconde – can also be used for traveling side
 écarté – can also be used for traveling in second position toward the corner

 *en dehors –“outward”, the turn moves away from the standing leg/alternative
explanation…ex., if on the right leg, the turn moves to the left

 *en dedans –“inward”, the turn moves towards the standing leg/ alternative
explanation…ex., if on the right leg, the turn moves to the right
*(The above terms are not only used for formal pirouettes; a simple tendu that
changes direction can be evaluated as an en dehors or en dedans movement.)
