This year in social studies students will cover U.S. government and economics, which
includes foundations of government, functions of the three branches, and introduction to
economics in the U.S. and throughout the world. All eighth grade students will take the
Virginia SOL test at the end of the course.

HCS GRADING SCALE –


A = 93 – 100
A- = 90 - 92
B+ = 87 – 89 Social Studies Grading Weights -
B = 83 – 86 35 % = Tests/ Projects
B- = 80 – 82 35 % = Classwork
C+ = 77 – 79 20 % = Quizzes
C = 73 – 76 10 % = Homework
C- = 70 - 72
D – 64 - 69
F – Below 64

Chromebook Policy –
Your student is expected to follow HCS procedure and policy when using their
Chromebook in the classroom. Any violation of the policy could result in referral to
administration and loss of Chromebook privileges.
Test Correction Policy -
Upon return of a test, students not scoring a 100% will be able to complete test
corrections.

- Each corrected question is worth 1⁄2 of the original value of the


question. (Example: 25 questions on the test, 4 points each – all corrected
questions are worth 2 points. A student that originally missed 5 question scored an
80% after doing the test corrections that student’s grade is a 90%)

- Directions

1. Rewrite the ENTIRE question (for all missed questions.)

2. Rewrite the ENTIRE CORRECT answer 


Test corrections are mandatory and count as a homework grade. It allows the
students to be exposed to the material again.

Quia --
Your student will be creating an account on the website Quia.com. They will have a
personal log-in and password. Quia is accessible from school and home. All tests will be
administered through the Quia account. The tests format will mimic the end of the year
SOL test. Your student’s account will store all the tests and test results for later viewing.
The Quia site also contains practice quizzes and games for each SOL. Please encourage
your student to log on and review.

Homework Policy –
All homework assignments will be written in the agenda the day they are assigned.

Unless otherwise noted homework is due the next day the class meets. Homework is
expected to be complete before the start of class.
Consequences for not having homework:
1st: warning & note in agenda with signature
2nd: parent phone call / email

3rd & 4th: detention

***Any further missing homework will result in a referral to administration.
