ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 3

Thayer School of Engineering Summer 2018

Prof. Snyder

Solve the following problems from the textbook by R.C. Hibbeler, 4th Edition:
Problems: 4–101, 4–106, 4–109, 5–16, 5–17, 5–24, 5–44, 5–60
and complete the design exercise to be assigned separately.

4–101. The uniform 50-lb beam is supported by

the rope that is attached to the end of the beam,
wraps over the rough peg, and is then connected
to the 100-lb block. If the coefficient of static
friction between the beam and the block, and
between the rope and the peg, is ms = 0.4,
determine the maximum distance that the block
can be placed from A and still remain in
equilibrium. Assume the block will not tip.

4–106. The shaft assembly is supported by two

smooth journal bearings A and B and a short link DC.
If a couple moment is applied to the shaft as shown,
determine the components of force reaction at the
journal bearings and the force in the link.
The link lies in a plane parallel to the y–z plane and
the bearings are properly aligned on the shaft.

4–109. Determine the x, y, z components of

reaction at the fixed wall A. The 150-N force is
parallel to the z axis and the 200-N force is
parallel to the y axis.
ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 3

*5–16. Determine the force in each member of the truss in terms of the external loading and state
if the members are in tension or compression.

5–17. The maximum allowable tensile force in the members of the truss is (Ft )max = 2 kN, and
the maximum allowable compressive force is (Fc )max = 1.2 kN. Determine the maximum
magnitude P of the two loads that can be applied to the truss. Take L = 2 m and θ = 30°.

*5–24. The Howe bridge truss is subjected to the loading shown. Determine the force in
members HD, CD, and GD, and state if the members are in tension or compression.

*5–44. Determine the force in members KJ, NJ, ND, and CD of the K truss. Indicate if the
members are in tension or compression. Hint: Use sections aa and bb.

*5–60. The platform scale consists of a combination of third and first class levers so that the load
on one lever becomes the effort that moves the next lever. Through this arrangement, a small
weight can balance a massive object. If x = 450 mm, determine the required mass of the
counterweight S required to balance a 90-kg load, L.
