Problem
31.46; 31.66; 31.xx; 20y.xx; Paper jam; 201.xx; Jam caused; Toner cartridge; Cartridge auger motor system under
speed; Stalling; Not working properly; Toner cartridge issue
Environment
This document is applicable to the following Lexmark printer models
Solution
Possible cause
Error code 201.22 is NOT caused by a paper jam. Most likely it is caused by not inserting the cartridge fully
before closing the cartridge door. Closing the door in this condition will jam the linkage that opens the toner
port to the imaging unit, thus the Imaging Unit starves and will not print or the auger motor will over
torque because the port is not open.
Error codes 31.46 and 31.66 are precursors to the 201.22 error code. The steps below should be followed
for any of these errors.
Troubleshooting
Step Action
Open the printer's front door and inspect to see whether the cartridge button is stuck. (See the portion
in red circle below.)

Remove and reinstall the cartridge. Push the toner cartridge body forward one last time to make sure
that it is seated completely. An easy way to test that the cartridge is fully inserted is to manually push
the button.
If there is little force needed to depress the button, it may not be fully inserted.
Push the cartridge forward again.
2
Note: Significant more force is required to depress the button if the cartridge is
seated properly.
If the cartridge was fully seated and the force is still low or the button is stuck,
change the toner cartridge.
If these errors re-occur, the problem is the toner cartridge. Try a different (used or new) toner cartridge
that the printer model supports.
3 Note: Should you not have a spare toner cartridge to try or if any of the above scenarios occur, contact
Lexmark Technical Support to report your findings. The Technical Support Agent will determine the
appropriate service needed for the printer.
Please contact Lexmark Technical Support if you need additional assistance. NOTE: When calling for
support, you will be asked for your machine/model type and serial number (SN). If you need help locating
these, click here.
Please call from near the printer in case the technician on the phone asks you to perform a task involving
the printer.

Make sure to go through the suggestions in the customer-level Troubleshooting table before setting up any
service for the printer.
Should the 201.22 error clear when using a different cartridge or if the customer does not
have a spare cartridge to use, ship a new toner cartridge.
If 201.22 persists even with a different cartridge in place, set up service to replace the
Cartridge Gear Box – P/N: 40X8083 (For MS310, MS410, MS510, MS610, MX310, MX410,
MX51x, MX61x).
IMPORTANT! The part number listed here is correct as of March 2013. If you encounter
problems when ordering with this part number, please contact Lexmark Parts Center.
Should issue persist after the above and a 'Mechanical replacement' is required, instruct the
customer to not remove the supplies but instead leave them in the device. Ask customer to
tape the toner plunger down to the door as described in the proper Shipping and return
instructions for the printer. The Product Engineers must receive the cartridge and the printer
to further examine the root cause of the issue.
