Course Description / Objective:


This course is a continuation of LALI 1020 Elementary Korean II. It is designed to further
expand students’ knowledge of the fundamental grammatical structure of Korean and acquire
wide vocabulary used in daily-life situations. In particular, students are expected to acquire the
following skills;
(1) Ability to read Korean sentences more naturally.
(2) Ability to maintain and develop simple conversations in Korean.
(3) Ability to comprehend and initiate simple conversations in Korean.
(4) Ability to write a short essay on a topic.
(5) Knowledge of Korea about cultural practices, politics, history and etc.

(2) http://clscholarship.org/ : The Critical Language Scholarship Program under the U.S.
Department of State. It offers summer scholarship to study in Korea every year. The application
usually starts in October.
(3) http://www.iie.org/Programs/Gilman-Scholarship-Program : This program offers scholarship
to students who study and intern abroad. It has restricted with those who need financial aids.
Check the website for the deadline and eligibility criteria!
(4) http://us.fulbrightonline.org/critical-language-enhancement-awards : Fulbright U.S. Student
Program. It offers intensive language study to Fulbright grant students.

scholarship opportunities sponsored by Korean Government.

Grading:
 Attendance and participation: 10 %
 Weekly Online homework: 15%
 Dictation: 10%
 Chapter Quizzes: 15%
 Mid-term: 15%
 Oral Test: 10%
 Interview: 10%
 Final exam: 15%

 Class attendance and participation (10%) : The class attendance and participation is
important for the development of language acquisition. In class, active participation means
coming to class on time, prepared, and actively contributed to class activities.

 Weekly Online Homework (15%) : Weekly online quizzes are given at ecoursware. Students
can complete them by the end of the semester. Each quiz will consist of 10 - 20 questions.

 Dictation (10%): Dictation will be given at the beginning of every class unless noted otherwise.
At the end of the semester, two lowest scores will be dropped. .

 Chapter Quizzes (15%) : The quizzes are given after finishing each chapter. No make-up quiz
will be given, unless you are excused under the conditions in the University Attendance Policy.

Intermediate Korean 1 (LALI 2010)
Fall 2018

 Mid-term (15%) : The Mid-term covers Chapter 8 and 9. It contains a written as well as a
listening section. No make-up quiz will be given, unless you are excused under the conditions
in the University Attendance Policy.

 Oral Test (10%): Students will create and perform a skit with his/her partner using words and
phrase we will learn through the semester. Check the calendar for the date. Additional
guidelines will be provided in advance. No make-up quiz will be given, unless you are excused
under the conditions in the University Attendance Policy.

 Interview (10%): the interview will be done one to one format with a teacher. The student will
be given a list of questions that will be used during the interview. No make-up will be given,
unless you are excused under the conditions in the University Attendance Policy..

 Final exam (15%): The final exam in this course is cumulative, incorporating all chapters,
grammar, and vocabulary from the entire semester. The final exam will contain a written as
well as listening section. No make-up quiz will be given, unless you are excused under the
conditions in the University Attendance Policy.

Make up Policy:
Students are allowed one make up quiz or exam for entire semester in case of serious emergency
(official documentation is required).

Course Grade

The final course grade will be standard, and will not be based on a curve. It will not be rounded
up.
