EE3003 Power Systems – Problem Set I

Assumptions:
i. Transmission line is transposed unless specified otherwise.
ii. The effect of earth on capacitance is neglected if distance between conductors and earth is not
given.

1. Find the self GMD of a seven strand (two layers) conductor if a strand of same radius, zero
conductivity and unity relative permeability replaces the center strand. Express the result in terms of
radius of individual strand.

2. Find the self GMD of the following unconventional stranded conductors.

(a) (b) (c) (d)

All strands have the same radius r.

3. Find the radius of the strands of a seven strand conductor which has the same self GMD as that of a
conductor of circular cross-section with radius 1 cm.

4. A transmission line is designed with symmetrical spacing of 5 m. It is decided to build the

transmission line with horizontal spacing ( D  2 D  2 D ). The conductors are transposed. What

5. A transmission line 50 km in length with horizontal spacing is to be constructed with conductors 2.56
cm in diameter. The transmission line series reactance must not exceed 21.4  at a frequency of 50
Hz. Find the maximum permissible spacing.

6. The inductive reactance of a transmission line with symmetrical spacing of 2 m is 0.5 /km. Find the
reactance for a spacing of 3 m. Frequency is 50 Hz.

9. A transmission line with horizontal spacing of 3 m has conductors of radius 0.328 cm. The
transmission line is 7.5 m above the ground. Find the % error in the value of capacitance calculated
neglecting the effect of earth.

10. A 50 Hz, 15 km long transmission line with horizontal spacing has conductors spaced 1.5 m apart.
The conductor radius is 1 cm. The currents in the conductors are -30+j50 A, -25+j55 A, 55-j105 A.
Find the magnitude of the voltage drops in the conductors.

11. A 110 kV, 50 Hz transmission line has horizontal spacing with 3.5 m distance between adjacent
conductors. The radius of the conductors is 1.05 cm. Find the charging current per km length of the
transmission line.

12. For the double circuit 110 kV, 50 Hz transmission line shown in question 7, the radius of the
conductors is 0.865 cm. Find the charging current per km per individual conductor.

13. A transmission line consists of three single core cables of 5 cm diameter. Find the line to neutral
capacitance per km if the conductor diameter is 3 cm and the sheath is of negligible thickness. The
relative permittivity of the dielectric is 4.
