SOCIAL MEDIA: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES TO THE

STUDENTS OF CDCNHS

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND:

Online social media have gained astounding worldwide growth and popularity which

has led to attracting attention from variety of researchers globally. Although with time all

generations have come to embrace the changes social network has brought about, teenagers and

young adults are the most fanatic users of these sites. According to various research studies in

the field of online social networks, it has been revealed that these sites are impacting the lives of

the youth greatly. When using these sites such as TWITTER, FACEBOOK or My SPACE, there

are both positive and negative effects on the youth.

Consumer are always been the key source for all marketing creations. Ever since

business houses have realized the importance of marketing orientation, business houses have

meditated of one single ideas called ‘Customer’ or ‘Consumer’. During different decades of 20th

Century and 21st Century technological innovations have changed the dynamism of media

platforms like print, radio, television, internet, and social media. Marketer exploited commercial

utility of each such platform and tried to communicate through these media and enhance his

brand equity. Marketing today is more exciting than ever before, with the advent of internet and

social media, the field of marketing is witnessing numerous opportunities as well as facing a

variety of challenges. Today a marketer can reach a costume from any part of the globe,

understand his need, propose a product or a service, and win over his heart and remain profitable.

At the same time today’s empowered, critical, demanding, price sensitive costumer’s are

growing in numbers in social networks, blogs, video sharing sites, online review forums and

others channels to quench their thirst for objective advice about product and to identify brands

that seem to care about forming relationship with them ( MCKinsey Quarterly, July 2011 ).
POSITIVE IMPACTS

It is inevitable to ignore the fact that nowadays social network plays an essential role in

teenagers ‘lives. Most youths are spending at least an hour in these popular social media sites.

Generally,1out of 7 minutes which are spend online by most of those who can access internet is

spent on Facebook according to Shea Bennett.One may ask how spending all that time on the

social media sites may have a positive impact on them. Well, social media helps the youth and

any other using updated with what is happening around the world, help the teenagers stay

connected and interact with each other even if they are many miles apart. These strengthen their

relationship even if they finished school and moved to different locations they stay connected

and update one another. In addition, social media sites have provided a platform whereby the

youth can create groups and pages based on their common discipline and end up building

connections and opportunities for their respective careers by updating various topics to discuss.

Youth who have been interviewed they say that social media has become their lifestyle and it

makes their lives easier and efficient.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS

While on one hand social network sites seems to bring people and connected on the other

hand it creates social isolation in regard to BBC News report. As the youth tend to spend many

hours on these sites, they rarely have face to face interaction. According various studies,

scientists’ evaluation determined that social isolation can lead to a host of emotional,

psychological, physical and mental problems which include anxiety, depression and somatic

complaints among many others.

Other negative effects of social networking various people suggested included encouraging

poor spelling and grammar, exposing underage to online predators, allowing spread of

misinformation that is perceived as fact, decreasing productivity as those who are supposed to be

working spend time in the sites to chat, provide a perfect platform for cyber bullying and

providing details that increase risks of identity theft.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study was valuable to determine the advantages and disadvantages of using

social media among selected students of Catalino D. Cerezo National High School. This study

aimed to assess the advantages and disavantages of using social media as perceived by their

parents that will be based on the data gathered.

The researchers find their study beneficial to the following:

a) Students;

b) Parents;

c) Teachers; and

d) Administrators.

SCOPE OF DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study confined itself to the identification of the advantages and disadvantages of

of using social media among the selected students of Catalino D. Cerezo National High School

on barangay Malimpec, Malasiqui, Pangasinan during the school year 2018-2019

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to determine the advantages and disadvantages of using social media to the

students of Catalino De Cerezo National High School. Specifically, the following question will

be answered:

1. What are the advantages and Disadvantages of using social media?

2. How many hours do you spent using social media per day?

3. How do you cope with the disadvantages through social media?

4. How does the social media affects your daily lives specially to your studies?
DEFINITION OF TERMS

STUDENTS- This group may use this study as an example to bear their mind that they are

more luckier than those who are bullied that their parents can send them into school. And to

know more what are the emotional effects of bullying if they tried or attempt to bully their

classmates, schoolmates and even the other people.

PARENTS- So that the parents will be able to know that they should have a sense of

dedication and devotion to duty as parents in implementation of some strategies for the due of

their being student although they experienced being bullied or those who committed bullying to

bring them in them in a state that they can be proud

This study mainly tackles about the advantages and this advantages of social networking

sites.The advantages of social networking sites are advertising communication and

research help to students and the disadvantages of it are cyber bully,cybersex, and short

attention span.Social Networking sites have been a good help to everyone in the

community,especially among the students,businessmen,and other member of the

Society.People can enjoy the features of the social networking sites but misusing or over

using them can be harmful.Talking of Social Networking Sites,we may define first the 5

most popular Social networking sites and the bad ones.

Facebook is said to be most popular social websites where one can share and upload

pictures,videos,message,chat,and may other features (Sales, 2010).Next is the

twitter,which is a social networking site for tweeting posts,sharing ideas,for easy

connections of celebrities and other personality,and for the trending topics

(Dorsey,2009).While Tumbir is a social networking sites for blogging

pictures,information,and an easily sharing of pictures and other stuffs

(Martin,2008).Then Bing is a social networking site . Then Bing is a social networking

site that allows people to search information,pictures,video clips, and files that can be

downloaded throughout the internet (Tyler,2006).And lastly is the Myspace known for a

good social networking site that allows the users to view someone’s profile picture and

comment(Anderson,2008).

We all need to realize that social networking communitiesare there to stay,considering

the millionof users that they have (Armstrong,2010).In addition,there are students today

have begun to stay to accessibility of information that is available on the social media

platforms specifically as well as the web in general in order to get answers and to please

themselves through playing games.Now,high school students,social websites are to help

them,giving them knowledge for thesis,journalis,and others.But misusing them could

deprive their focus on studies.

Social Networking started as a place to connect with your friends in an easy and

convenient way(Jackson,2009).Social networking sites allow the individual in the family

to share their daily lives in a sure but public forums.Family members are able to

organized events.Relatives abroad can communicate and share things everytime in there

own freetime despite the fact that there geographical distance.Celebrities are no more in

contact with there fans,giving them recent updates to what is currently happening

picture,videos and articles related to them(Parrack,2008).Celebrities can easily tell the

public on the future events and post something regarding to other things.With the advent

of social networks,social scientist and media experts have wondered about the benefits of

social networking brings to communication(Jeffrey,2009).The ability to say in connect

with friends allow us to maintain closes ties to our loveones across long distances.People

are able to update what is currently happenng in the social media.Updating status is the

most frequent thing than by people.A social networking sites can be a good way to make

connections with people with similar interest and goals(Steve,2008).Communication is

one of the main things why social networking sites to gather information to broaden their

knowledge.Since social networking is a huge place to gather information to what is

trending nowadays.Trending topics regards to celebrities,politics,sciences

technologies,discoveries and amazing facts(Green,2008).Other things in the social media

are a great chance to gaher ideas since those article are specified (Green,2008).Businesses

have notice the value of social networks in our life,and they are using different

techniques to promote their products(Salita,2008).There are number of customized

application being made in the social platforms whose main purposes is to promote the

products or brands a social marketing is cost effective and brands have a huge

audience,they are shifting more towards to social marketing.Social networking sites is not

only good for us,because others are having inappropriate content,such as pornographic

sites and nude photos,and other sites can tend people to be addicted in a specific social

networking sites and most of this are cyber games.Good sites like facebook cannot

always be said to good because some people use it badly and worst such as cyber

bullying and any other inappropriate action.Since the arrival of the internet and of social
networking sites in particular we have noticed our attention spans shortening and recent

years(Gerald,2011).There is so much information to assume that we rarely spend anytime

explaining any of it,in great dept.Many studies have shown that the extensive use of

social media can actually cause addiction to the users(Mayer,2012).Students tend to focus

on cyber games that block the focus on their studies.A person gets lazy of works dues to

over usage of social networking sites and online games.

METHODS AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the research design used in the study and the data of the targeted reseach

respondents.Include further are the research instrument use and the data gathering procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study use the descriptive-survey method,which is suitble whenever the subjects vary

themselves and interested to know the extents to which different condition and obtained among

these subjects.Survey research involved the use of questionnaires or statistically surveys to

gather data about one or more groups of people perhaps about their thoughts, attitude, or

previews experiences, buy asking questions and tabulating their answers.The main goal is to

collect data in order to test hypothesis or to answer questions concerning the current status of the

subject of study (Gay,1976).Qualitative research design was also used in these study;Qualitative

research is a generic form of investigating methologies described as

ethnographic,naturalistic,anthropological,field,or participant observer research.Field research is

often used interchangeably with qualitative research to describe systematic observations of social

behavior with no preconceived hypothesis as to be tested (Rubin&Babbie,1993).

The Written approach was use in this study to found out the views that the respondends ‘.The

researcher used this to determine the use of social network sites.These methods were use to

gather data on the use of social among Gas students of Catalino D.Cerezo National High School

1)What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of using Social Media ?

For me, the advantages of social media is- it is very useful in terms of using internet for projects

and researches and also for communication,while it’s Disadvantages are the hours I spend using

social media and playing too much in online games.

Disadvantages of it is many users didn’t use it properly like they learn “kabastusan” and etc.

Nowadays,in the 21st century technologies are evolved and social media is rampant and it is very

useful in many ways like having a better communication,in business,in school and more.And the

disadvantage is, not proper usage of it so that I am become addicted of using my gadgets.

para sa akin at sa ating lahat dahil kung wala ito ay mahihirapan tayo na makipag-communicate
sa mga kamag-anak nating nasa karatig-bayan o abroad,dahil ditto napapabilis ang

komunikasyon natin at napapadali nito ang paggawa nito ng mga aktibidades natin sa

Social networking clearly portrays both positive and negative effects on the youth. It is

decision of an individual to make whether to continue using the sites or not. The effects of social

media on language and communication

Social media’s had both positive and negative impacts on language and communication.

Communication can be described as an act or a process between sender and receiver using

words, sounds or symbols. Having the ability to communicate effectively is definitely the most

important life skill to learn. Providing us the opportunity to not only understand, but to connect

with the people around us. Communication provides links, which bind an association together in

order to evolve common understanding Rodgers etal (2002). Social media is our link to sharing

breaking news and to communicate with larger audiences from all over the world. As a result, if

you happen to have family or friends who live out of state, you can instant message or “Face

Time” them to keep in touch. In addition, emoji’s as well as acronyms such as BRB (be right

back) have added major elements of nonverbal communication. So, if someone unable to see you

at the present time, you’re still able to express yourself by using an emoticon. Not to mention

you can post photos and share those on your Facebook instead of having grandma wait by the

mailbox for those lovely class portraits. Also, a lot of events have taken place in the past few

years that wouldn’t have known about if it wasn’t for social media. In regards to the recent police

brutality incidents, only the officer’s side of the story would have reached media neither the

victims nor bystanders. Then, you have the #FlintWaterCrisis hashtag which reveled to America

how contaminated water in the city of Michigan resulted in more than 6,000 children being

exposed to high levels of lead and a series of help problems. Furthermore, has become the norm

for people to communicate through technology most no longer know how to interact when face

to face anymore, few people are actually taking the time to communicate verbally . Most rather

text friends in the same room or tweet about how much of a good time they’re having. I’ve
watched families while out for dinner, take calls and even their toddlers are glued to a

smartphone or tablet. Social networking sites and technology as a whole takes away from the

time we would spend telling loved ones about our day and that’s truly unfortunate.
