What is prayer?

 Is a communion with God


 Communication with God
 Spiritual breath(respiration)
 Proves the existence of God
 Means of securing heavenly intervention
 Requires grace
 We need Him more than He needs us
The origin of prayer

Genesis 1:26 ¶ And God said Let us make


man in our image, after our likeness: and
let them have dominion over the fish of the
sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over
the cattle, and over all the earth, and over
every creeping thing that creepeth upon
the earth.

The prayer of Thanksgiving

The prayer of worship

 Worship is an attitude
 It is not worship if it does not involve our attitude
 Psalm 95:1-7
 It is usually described in scriptures with words such as
bowing down, kneeling down, raising hands, etc
The Prayer of commitment

 Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the


LORD; and he shall give thee the desires
of thine heart.
 5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust
also in him; and he shall bring it to pass
 6 And he shall bring forth thy
righteousness as the light, and thy
judgment as the noonday.
 This is casting all cares on Him. 1Peter 5:7
The prayer of Dedication

 To sanctify means to set apart


 John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself,
that they also might be sanctified through the
truth.
 Romans 12:1 ¶ I beseech you therefore, brethren,
by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies
a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which
is your reasonable service
The Prayer of faith

 Usually for healing and miracles


 Usually prayed only once
 Mark 11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have
faith in God.
 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say
unto this mountain, Be thou removed and be thou cast
into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall
believe that those things which he saith shall come to
pass he shall have whatsoever he saith
 James 5: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick
and the Lord shall raise him up and if he have
committed sins, they shall be forgiven him
The prayer of Desperation

 Zechariah 14:1 ¶ Behold, the day of the LORD cometh


and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to
battle; and the city shall be taken and the houses rifled
and the women ravished and half of the city shall go
forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall
not be cut off from the city.
 3 Then shall the LORD go forth and fight against those
nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
The Prayer of Agreement

 Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever


ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven:
and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.
 19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall
agree on earth as touching any thing that they
shall ask it shall be done for them of my Father
which is in heaven.
 20 For where two or three are gathered together
in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
United Prayer
 Acts 4:23 ¶ And being let go they went to their own
company, and reported all that the chief priests and
elders had said unto them.
 24 And when they heard that they lifted up their voice
to God with one accord, and said Lord, thou art God,
which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all
that in them is:
 25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said
Why did the heathen rage and the people imagine vain
things?
 31 And when they had prayed the place was shaken
where they were assembled together and they were all
filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of
God with boldness
Praying with your spirit
 1Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown
tongue, my spirit prayeth but my understanding is
unfruitful.
 15 ¶ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit,
and I will pray with the understanding also: I will
sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the
understanding also.
 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how
shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned
say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he
understandeth not what thou sayest
 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other
is not edified
The prayer of supplication

 Philippians 4:6-7
 Supplication is making request to God concerning our
needs
 Most believers pray this prayer: they are always asking
for something from God
 ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and
Supplication
 Our asking should be done with great humility and
earnestness
The prayer of petition

 To petition is to lodge a complaint against someone or


something
 1 John 5:15
 We can petition to God against evil governments,
individuals and circumstances. We “complain” for His
intervention
 Related to supplication
The prayer of intercession

 The intercessor takes the place of another before God


 He/she stands in the gap. Ezekiel 22:30-31
 Moses stood in the gap
 Numbers 16:48
 Daniel interceded for Israel
 Abraham interceded for Sodom and Gomorrah
 Paul interceded for Israel
The prayer of command

 Joshua issued a command that was obeyed by nature


 Joshua 10:12
 Elijah prayed this prayer and stopped rain and brought
rain
 James 5:13-17
 The prayer of binding and losing falls within this premise
The prayer of Importunity

 This is persistence
 Children can be very importunate with their parents
 The importunate widow Luke 18:1-8
 This is a Pray Until Something Happens (PUSH) type of
prayer
 This prayer does not take no for an answer
 Importunate prayer warriors “disturb” heaven until there
is a response from above!
The prayer of blessing

 By this prayer blessings are released upon an individual,


group or community
 Leviticus 6:23-27
 The children of Israel were blessed with this prayer by
the High Priest
 You can bless whoever God has blessed already and
release blessing wherever and on whomsoever it is
needed
The prayer of cursing

 If we can bless then we can also curse!


 Jesus cursed the fig tree
 Mark 11:11-24
 We can curse forces of darkness and every thing
contrary to God
 We can curse what God has cursed already
