This class explores the many facets of jazz through the study of important events and major
figures. Students learn the art of active listening by gaining a greater understanding of the
musical elements through listening (to live performances and recordings), class discussion,
historical videos and reading. This course covers the history of American musical expression as
it relates to ragtime, early jazz, swing, bop, cool, hardbop, avantgarde, postbop, fusion, Latin
jazz and contemporary jazz.

There will be 8 quizzes given, your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. You will be given 30
minutes for each quiz, they will start at the beginning of class.

Jazz Concert Reports
Report 1 due on or before Wednesday September 19
Report 2 due on or before Monday October 29
Report 3 or interview due on or before Wednesday December 5
Papers will not be accepted after the due date, they must be turned in during class. Papers will
not be accepted via email or outside of class. Each report should be between 23 pages, and
should include:
Basic Information
1. A program, if available
2. The name of the band and/or band members (if not listed in the program)
3. The name and type of venue (if not listed in the program)
4. The date of the performance (if not listed in the program)
5. Pieces performed (if not listed in the program)
6. Length of the concert (you should plan on staying from 1 hour to 90 minutes)
Overall Impression of the performance
1. Instrumentation (if not listed in the program)
2. Quality of the performance
3. How the musicians relate to one another
4. How the musicians relate to the audience
5. How the audience relates to the musicians
Map of a specific piece
1. CHOOSE ONE PIECE and make a map of the performance from beginning to end
2. Use terminology we have used in class, i.e. melody, form, texture, timbre, meter, etc.
You can choose to substitute an interview for the 3rd concert report
the interview of a jazz musician must include:
1. Name of the musician and instrument(s)
2. Date of the interview
3. Whether the interview was conducted in person, via phone, email, etc
4. Questions and Answers
5. Reasons you were compelled to interview this musician
The interview should be limited to 10 minutes or 5 questions. At live performances musicians
typically have 30 minute breaks, so informing them you only need 10 minutes of their time will
make them more receptive than they might be to an openended interview
