Bio Sketch

Jiban K. Mukhopadhyay is at present Consultant, Corporate Economics &


Governance.

I. Mukhopadhyay was Professor of International Business,


Economics, Business Environment and Coordinator, Ethics and
Business-an Integrated Course of SP Jain Institute of Management &
Research, Mumbai (ranking 5/6 as a Business School in India).

He was also Project Director, SPJIMR’s Strategic Initiatives on Corporate


Governance as sponsored by National Foundation of Corporate Governance,
a forum constituted by Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India,
Confederation of Indian Industry, Institute of Chartered Accountants of
India, etc. which accredits B- schools, and other higher educational
institutes for doing serious research in corporate governance.

He was also Faculty- in-Charge of the institute’s library and seriously


involved in SPJIMR’s unique Beyond Classroom initiatives.

His areas interests in SPJIMR included applied economics, corporate &


strategic planning, international business, corporate governance, ethics &
business, etc. (May 2004 January 2017)

II. Before coming to SPJIMR, he was the Chief Economic Adviser of


Tata Group, India’s most reputed business house, where he worked in
the Tata Group’s Economic Think Tank for almost three decades,
eventually heading the organization and retiring in mid-June 2004.

Simultaneously, he was Chief WTO Officer of Tata Group companies,


implementing the globalization initiatives within the Group and outside. He
was also Chief Editor of Tata's famous Statistical Outline of India. (February
17 1975 to June 24 2004)

III. Prior to the above, he was Urban Economist with Asansol Planning
Organization (attached to Calcutta Metropolitan Planning
Organization), Ministry of Planning and Development, Government
of West Bengal. (Februray1974 - Februrary75).

He started his career with teaching at his alma mater, Ramakrishna Mission
Ashram, Narendrapur, West Bengal, a premier educational institution in
India (1967-72).

He was Research Fellow, Indian Council of Social Science and Research,


New Delhi (1972-74).

He holds a B.A. (Hons.) from R K Mission Residential College,


Narendrapur, University of Calcutta and M.A. in Economics from the
University of Calcutta.
He also participated in a number of Advanced Courses on various topics
organized by reputed institutions like ISI, TMTC, etc.

As Chief Advisor of Tata Group, he used to be Member of various Expert


Committees with Apex Chambers of Commerce as well as several
Government Bodies.

He has over 165 published papers, articles and pamphlets, excluding the
wide range of research studies/ papers prepared for the Tata Group over a
period of about 30 years.

As Tata groups Chief Economic Adviser, he had to take care of the


economic assignments of the top corporate leaders as well as those from the
Group as whole and individual companies. He headed a team of eight bright
economists in managing these endeavors.
During the years of the economic reforms in the Indian economy (since June
1991) and the restructuring of the groups business, he played a crucial role.

During 1999-2004, alongside his corporate economic works for Tata Group
companies he implemented Tata Group’s WTO/ Global Competitiveness
Initiative, conducting over 100 WTO Awareness programs as well as 30
WTO Audit for a number of Tata Group companies/ businesses based on
the methodology devised by him.

In August 2003, received an invitation from Project Management Institute


(PMP) in Tokyo and International Simulation & Gaming Association’s
annual conference , ISAGA 2003 to deliver a number of talks on Indian
economy and Enterprise Innovation Adopting Program Implementation with

respect to Tata Group’s World Class Project Implementation record (Indica
and Tata Steel’s CRM) in Tokyo and Chiba Japan, August 24-31 2003.
Abstract of the paper was published in the journal of ISAGA 2003.

He was also the Project Director and Chief Author of a Tata Centenary
publication, Reforms & Productivity Trends in Indian Manufacturing Sector,
December 2003.

After his retirement from Tata Group as Chief Economic Adviser in June,
2004, he joined SPJIMR as a Professor. As a Professor, he coauthored a
paper, ‘Business Effectiveness – the Next Level: Being Served by the Poor’,
published by Harvard Business School in a book, Business Solutions for the
Global Poor, 2007.
He also prepared a short paper on PPP in Higher & Technical Education in
India to the World Bank, March 2007.

He was selected as a Panelist (Sustainability and Triple Bottom Line) at the


Third Bentley Global Business Ethics Symposium, Madrid, in June 2007.
His paper, ‘How to Make Indian SMEs Competitive?’, was accepted for
presentation (subsequent publication) at the International Conference on
Global Research & Economics, Houston, March 2008.

He used to sit on a number of several professional bodies and rated as an


eminent corporate economist in India.
Illustratively, he moderated a panel discussion and gave the Valedictory
address in national seminar on Family Managed Business in India organized
by International Institution of Informatics Management, Jaipur, August ‘07.

He was a member, Selection Committee for Senior Fulbright Fellowship 08-


09.
On an invitation from the World Bank Institute and InWent (Capacity
Building International Germany), he participated at 12th International
Business Forum 2007, Washington D.C. Oct 07.
He also participated at the global conference on Sustainability related issues
at the 2010Annual MARAAS Conference, Pennsylvania State University
22-23 Oct 2010.

He is regularly invited by Corporates/Apex Chambers of Commerce,
management schools, international organizations like World Bank Institute,
etc to deliver talks/ do presentations. Recently, he made presentations to The
Raymond Ltd., Waker Metroark Ltd. (a Indo – German Company), IIM C,
GRG Institute of Management, CII, etc. (2010-12).

He was Project Director, Corporate Governance Initiatives of SPJIMR,


which has been accredited by National Foundation for Corporate
Governance (NFCG) since 2005-06.
He closely supervised the completions of a number of empirical research
works in corporate governance with his small team sponsored and funded by
NFCG:
(i) Showcasing Best Practices in Corporate Governance by Medium Sized
Family Managed Public Ltd. Companies based on 30 companies surveyed )
– Three Case Studies.
The findings of the report were discussed in a Round Table in April ’09. A
comprehensive research report has been prepared integrating the research
study as mentioned above with the proceedings of the Round Table (March
2010).

(ii) Subsequently, yet another empirical study, ‘A Study on Corporate


Governance Practices and Financial Performance of Selected Family
Managed Medium Sized Listed Companies in India’ was initiated in 2010-11
with the sponsorship of NFCG, and completed in March 2012.
(iii) Yet another empirical study on Financial Performance and Corporate
Governance and
(iv) Risk management and Internal Control of Medium Sized Companies,
completed for NFCG in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
All these reports and the reports of three round tables organized by him are
available in the NFCG website.
(v) Finally, he was Adviser to a corporate governance report of SPJIMR,
prepared by his selected team on the Role of Independence Directors role,
submitted to NFCG in 17 July 2017.

While in Tata Group as well as in SPJIMR, he used to organize Courses/


Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, etc.
He was responsible for ‘building bridges’ with SPJIMR and the Tata group.

He published an article, Beyond TBL – Tata Group as a Governance Model,
TMTC Journal March 2010.He also published an article on Corporate
Governance Practices in Business@ Governance & Sustainability, ICSI, Dec
10, 2010.
A Case on RLEK: Survival with the Bottom Line -- co-authored by him
with three PGDM students won a Case-writing contest organized by ISB-
Ivey, and was published by Ivey (9B12M029), 2012.

He was invited for a week from November 24 2012 as a Special Guest at the
3rd International Academic Conference on Management Innovation and
Competence of Large Enterprises, organized by Business School, Liaoning
University and Management Science Department & National Natural
Science Foundation of China, Shenyang as well as China Academy of
Social Science ( CASS), Beijing.
He delivered the inaugural talk on the MBA day of the Business school and
had several meetings on economic issues with some senior officials of
CASS, Beijing.
His paper, Strategizing Global Business: A Study of Dynamic Companies of
China and was published by Liaoning University in June 2013.
Recently, he chaired a session on GST organized by Indian School of Social
Science and Welinkar Institute of Management, Mumbai, October 14, 2017
where Dr. Asim Das Gupta , former Finance Minister, West Bengal was the
Guest Speaker.
Delivered Key Note address on Vision India 2025 and moderated the panel
discussion on the Union Budget 2018-19 at the inaugural session of the
seventh national seminar, Jaipuria Institute of Business Management ,
Indore, February, 16 , 2018

He has been regularly invited as guest expert on current economic issues by


various T V channels & quoted in the print & electronics media.
