The sounds for the blue characters above can be changed by using small ヤ、ユ、and ヨ。

Since Katakana is used to write loan words (words borrowed from other languages), you can also use

the five vowels (ア, イ, ウ, エ, and オ) to make new sounds. When used in this way, you simply change

the vowel sound of the kana.

This is useful for creating sounds that are not usually present in Japanese. For instance, if your name is

Tina, you wouldn’t want to write it as チナ, because that would be pronounced “Chi-na” instead of

“Ti-na”.
