SITUATION 1 000 psi for the steel segment BC.
The compound shaft consists of Determine the diameter of each
bronze and steel segments, both segment so that each material is
having 120-mm diameters. If the simultaneously stressed to its
torque T causes a maximum shear permissible limit when the torque T
stress of 100 MPa in the bronze = 16 kip-ft is applied as shown. The
segment, determine the angle of shear moduli are 6x106 psi for bronze
rotation of the free end. Use G = 83 and 12x106 psi for steel.
GPa for steel and G = 35 GPa for
bronze.

SITUATION 5
Both ends of the steel shaft are
attached to rigid supports. Find the
distance a where the torque T must
be applied so that the reactive
torques at A and B are equal.
SITUATION 2
The stepped steel shaft carries the
torque T. Determine the maximum
allowable magnitude of T if the
working shear stress is 12 MPa and
the rotation of the free end is
limited to 4 degrees. Use G = 83 GPa
for steel.
SITUATION 6
The steel rod fits loosely inside
the aluminum sleeve. Both components
are attached to a rigid wall at A
and joined together by a pin at B.
Because of a slight misalignment of
the pre-drilled holes, the torque T0

The tapered, wrought iron shaft rod before the pin could be inserted
carries the torque T = 2000 lb-in. into the holes. Determine the torque
at its free end. Determine the angle in each component after T0 was
of twist of the shaft. Use G = 10x106 removed. Use G = 80 GPa for steel
psi for wrought iron. and G = 28 GPa for aluminum.

attached to rigid walls. The maximum A solid steel shaft transmits 20 hp
shear stress is limited to 10 000 while running at 120 rev/min. Find
psi for the bronze segment AB and 14 the smallest safe diameter of the
shaft if the shear stress is limited

to 5000 psi and the angle of twist
of the shaft is not to exceed 9in a
length of 10 ft. Use G = 12x106 psi
for steel.

SITUATION 8
The two steel shafts, each with one
end built into a rigid support, have
flanges attached to their free ends.
The flanges are to be bolted
together. However, initially there
is a 6 degrees mismatch in the
location of the bolt holes as shown
in the figure. Determine the maximum
shear stress in each shaft after the
flanges have been bolted together.
The shear modulus of elasticity for
steel is 12x106 psi. Neglect
deformations of the bolts and the
flanges.

SITUATION 9
The figure shows an inboard engine,
8-ft long steel drive shaft, and
propeller for a motor boat. The
shaft is to be designed to safely
transmit 200 hp at 3500 rev/ min.
Determine the diameter of the
smallest shaft that can be used and
its corresponding angle of twist.
For the steel, use a working shear
stress of 12 000 psi and G = 12x106
psi.

SITUATION 10
A hollow steel propeller shaft, 18
ft long with 14-in. outer diameter
and 10-in. inner diameter, transmits
5000 hp at 189 rev/min. Use G =
12x106 psi for steel. Calculate (a)
the maximum shear stress; and (b)
the angle of twist of the shaft.
