CE5710: DESIGN OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

ASSIGNMENT-1

Q = Last two digits of your roll number

An I-girder of a bridge in Chennai is shown below. Span of the girder is 10m and it is
concentrically prestressed with 20-strands of 98.7mm2 each. After short term losses, the
effective stress in the prestressing cable is (1400+Q) MPa. The concrete has a compressive
strength of (40+0.2Q) MPa and take the average annual relative humidity in Chennai to be 80%.

1) Loss of prestress in steel due to creep after 10 years, if the girder is loaded on the 14th day
after casting.
2) Plot the strain variations due to creep with time (upto 5 years) considering the girder to be
loaded on the
a) 7th day after casting
b) 14th day after casting
c) Compare the strain values in the graphs a & b at salient times. What do you observe
and why?
3) Plot the strain variations with time (upto 5 years) due to autogenous, drying and total
shrinkage assuming
a) 7 days of moist curing
b) 14 days of moist curing
4) If the same girder was constructed under identical loading conditions in Indore, where the
average annual relative humidity is 50%, what would be the loss of prestress in steel due
to creep after 10 years?
