Lesson Plan # 8 Title: Solving Logarithmic Equations

Performance Objective:

Performance Objective #15: Given a calculator, students will solve a logarithmic

equation of the type log (x−1) +log (x) = log (3) in 2 out of 3 questions on a quiz.

Performance Objective #16: Given a calculator, students will solve a logarithmic

equation of the type log (x−4) – log (x−1) = 1 in 2 out of 3 questions on a quiz.

Performance Objective #17: Given a calculator, students will solve a logarithmic

equation of the type log (x−2) + log (x+3) = 2 in 2 out of 3 questions on a quiz.

Resources or Materials Needed:

Computer, document camera, and projector

Warm-up Activity

Exit Ticket

(See instructional material page for all activities)

Time: 75 minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities:

Warm Up Activity:

Have students answer the following questions:

1. log(𝑎) + log(𝑏) =

2. log(𝑎) − 𝑙𝑜𝑏(𝑏) =

3. 𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑔(𝑏) =

Condense the following logarithmic expressions:

4. 2ln(𝑥 + 2 ) − ln(5 𝑥 )

5. log( 3𝑥 − 5 ) + log( 2𝑥 − 7 )
Step 2: Content Presentation:

As a class go through the following examples, express your answer as both an exact expression

and a decimal approximation rounded to four decimal places:

 log 6 ( 𝑥 + 4 ) + log 6 ( 𝑥 − 4 ) = log 6 ( 4𝑥 + 5 )

 2 ln( 𝑥 + 1 ) = ln( 4𝑥 + 25 )

 log 2 ( 𝑥 + 2 ) + log 2 ( 𝑥 + 2 ) = 4

 2 ln( 𝑥 − 3 ) = ln( 10𝑥 )

 log 5 ( 𝑥 − 3 ) − log 5 ( 𝑥 ) = log 5 ( 4 )

 log11 ( 𝑥 − 2 ) + log11 ( 𝑥 + 2 ) = log11 ( 𝑥 − 1 )

 log 2 ( 𝑥 − 3 ) − log 2 ( 𝑥 + 2 ) = 1

Step 3: Learner Participation:

Exit Ticket:

Solve the following equations, make sure to show all your work:

1. log 5 ( 𝑥 − 3 ) + log 5 ( 𝑥 + 4 ) = log 5 ( 5𝑥 + 9 )

2. ln( 𝑥 − 1 ) = ln( 9𝑥 )

3. log 6 ( 𝑥 − 1 ) − log 6 ( 𝑥 ) = log 6 ( 2 )

Step 4: Assessment:

Students will take a mini-test over this material using an online software. (See assessment page)

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities:

Student completes Section 7.5 certification in Hawkes (computer homework software).

Lesson Plan Summary:

To start this lesson, have students, complete the warm up activity. This activity will help

them review the rules of logs what will be needed to solve the equation in this lesson. After

going over the answers for the warm up activity the instructor will lead the class through the

example problems of solving logarithmic equations. After completing the examples as a class,

have the students work the exit ticket questions and turn in.
