MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE R-3&4-EMP-50000-06

0.0 TITLE:

Maintenance Procedure for Station Grounding Resistance Measurement.

1.0 SCOPE:

This procedure is applicable for station grounding system of RAPS-3&4.

1.1 CATEGORY OF EQUIPMENT / MAINTENANCE CRITERIA:

Category – A

Maintenance Criteria: Grounding Resistance is to be measured annually.

1.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The subject of grounding comprises of the system of grounding of electrical equipment,

steel structures and lightning protection. Equipment grounding pertains to earthing of all
non current carrying metal parts of all electrical equipment with associated structures
steel vessels, which are in contact of electrical equipment and fence enclosing
substations/ electrical equipment.

Object of grounding is to stabilize circuit potential with respect to ground and limit the
potential between non current carrying parts/ structures and earth within a safe touch and
step voltage under all conditions of normal and abnormal system operations so that it
ensures personnel safety as well as effective ground path for operation of protective gears
in the event of fault, there by limiting damage to equipment or risk of fire.

The grounding system has been designed as:

a) To provide safety to personnel from contact with dangerous potential caused by
ground fault current.
b) To provide low resistance conducting path for ground fault current and lightning
discharge.
c) To facilitate the operation of ground fault relaying.
d) Stabilize circuit potential with respect to ground.

The ground grid of different areas like Turbine, Control, Reactor Service Building,
Switchyard, DM Plant, CW Pump House, SSE etc. are inter connected at least at two
points.

The resistivity of soil is very high, hence two ground conductors from the ground grid of
CW Pump house are going to intake pump house and finally terminate to the existing
river bed electrode. By this way the earthing resistance of whole plant is kept within 1
Ohm.

4
MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE R-3&4-EMP-50000-06

The size of ground conductor is adequate to carry maximum earth fault current for
maximum 3 seconds, duration without exceeding the specified maximum temperature at
the joints.

Grid below ground level has been fabricated by mild steel rods and galvanized steal flats
has been used for exposed areas.

The conductor size selected for grid/rise/electrode is 40mm dia mild steel rod below
ground level and 50x6mm galvanized steel flat for above ground level i.e on
ceiling/floor/ wall. The ground grid below ground level consists of square/ rectangular
mesh to attain a uniform gradient.

1.3 TECHNICAL DETAILS:

a) Equivalent grounding resistance : 0.188?

b) Allowable touch potential : 680.80V
c) Allowable step potential : 2231.6V
d) Location Av. Grid spacing Calculated touch potential Calculated step

2.1.4 Expected time of completion:

2 Days
2.1.5 Safety instruction & precautions
i) During measurement of ground resistance measurement station earth mat should
be considered as live.
ii) Safety Hand Gloves should be used during measurement to avoid hazardous
shock.
2.1.6 Procedure
1. Erect one current electrode mesh (made by three electrodes in a equilateral
triangle form having each area 4 ft.) near Shree Hanuman Mandir (towards
construction south direction)

2. Lay cable of approximately 2 km length from the test electrode in switchyard to

current electrode.

3. Connect one end of the cable to test electrode through a DC source and another
end to current electrode. Inject constant current 5A.

4. Insert spikes at 100 m intervals in parallel to the cable and measure the voltage
with respect to test electrode.

5. Plot a graph for resistance V/S Distance.

6. An average value of measured resistance of the non influential (neutral zone) i.e.
when there is not much change in resistance with distance

7. Record the observations in attached checklist Ref. No. EMP/50000/06/CM/01
