CLUB DE ROMA

GROWTH LIMITS

The club was founded in 1968 by 35 personalities from 30 countries, currently has
its General Secretariat in Hamburg, and currently has a maximum limit of 100
members from 38 countries today.

ITS OBJECTIVES ARE:

- The identification of the most crucial problems that affect humanity, an analysis in
an international context and the search of future alternative solutions and the
development of future scenarios.
- The communication of these problems to the people more relevant and to those
responsible for decision-making, as well as to the general public.

Principles of complementarity that will govern:

- A global perspective in the examination of the various issues.
- A holistic thinking and the search for a deeper understanding of the complexity of
the contemporary problems.
- An interdisciplinary perspective and long-term when considering the elections and
policies that determine the fate of future generations.

AREAS OF INTEREST:
1. ENVIRONMENT
The man, more than ever, has been damage to the nature, putting at risk the very
survival of mankind. Despite this, we still know little about many environmental
issues, such as the greenhouse effect and the holes in the ozone layer;

It is the responsibility of governments, but also of each and every one of the
citizens, act toward the eradication of the macro-pollutants that affect the water, air
and land, and endanger the health of human beings. The environment is an
important facet of the global issues to which we have to deal, intertwined with the
energy, the population explosion in some countries, poverty and
underdevelopment.
2. DEMOGRAPHICS
The explosion of the population has been spectacular in the last century: the world
population has more than tripled since 1900 and duplicated since 1950. The impact
of this demographic growth has had tremendous consequences on the
environment, employment, health, food and water availability, etc. At this point,
there are contradictory tendencies: in some countries an ageing of the population
is occurring, as in the European countries and Japan; While in the poorest
countries, like those in Africa, there is an explosion of the population, which means
education, housing, work, etc. For all the young people who come to the market.

3. DEVELOPMENT
After 40 years of development policies, hunger, malnutrition and poverty still exist
in many developing countries or in large tracts of them.
Has made a series of proposals to put an end to this intolerable situation, which is
a source of suffering, immigration, crime and drug trafficking.

4. VALUES
During the last decades, a strong rejection has been observed to the traditional
values and to the points of reference. The man cannot live only of bread. There is
an increasing need for glance towards a value system, common and compatible,
with the different cultures and ethics.

5. GOVERNANCE
Is this ungovernable world? Why are the governments unable to resolve many
important issues such as unemployment, environmental pollution, corruption,
criminality, terrorism?
Cases to be attack: the increase in the complexity of the problems, the
interdependence among countries, the need of approximations multidisciplinary,
the lack of leadership and of long-term vision, but also uncertainty, which is a mark
of identity of the current time.

6. THE WORK IN THE FUTURE

New technologies have created a real revolution, reducing the number of workers
thanks to the robots, computers, telecommunications and now to the combination
of all these matters that we call Multimedia.
What is the future of work and how the amount of work available can be
redistributed. Consequently, how human life, based from yesteryear on work, can
be organized in the future, what will be the activities of human beings, in terms of
work, occupations, community services, learning, leisure, etc.

7. THE ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL WORLD

The globalization of the economy and information have changed the overall picture
that we are accustomed to see. There are no regulations, there is no ethics, and
we have to learn how we want to live with this globalization, which favors the rich
on the poor and affects many facets of the individual and collective existence.

In 1972, the population and the economy of the world still fit comfortably in the
resilience of the planet. The computer then saw that there was still room to grow
with security in both exploring options in the longer term. Today, this is no longer
the case.
L to humanity has "exceeded" dangerously its limits, expanding their demands on
the resources of the planet, and sinks beyond what can be maintained even in the
next century.

The population growth has outstripped the capacity of the system of food
production to feed adequately to the populations. While, there has been the
increase in food production through policies that harm the soil, water, forests and
ecosystems - a cost that will hamper the production increases in the future.

The exponential growth of the population and of the industrial production are
largely responsible for the state of deterioration of the land today.
