ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

3rd Sunday after Pentecost June 18th & 21st, 2009

Theme of the Day

“COME AND LEARN…GO AND SHARE!”

Hymns: 177(v1-3) (v4-6) (see Insert) & Psalm 73(p.94) & Psalm 78(p.95) 331

Order of Service: Service of the Word & Sacrament (p. 26-37)

First Reading: Ephesians 6:5-9

These words addressed to slaves apply to us as workers. We do our
work to the best of our ability, not to be “men-pleasers” but to serve
our Lord wholeheartedly. We serve “quietly” not to make a name for
ourselves, but to honor our Savior, Jesus. The Apostle Andrew served
faithfully, quietly, “behind the scenes” to his Savior’s glory.

Second Reading: Mark 1:14-20

Andrew was one of the “top four” of the 12 disciples, but the least
known of the four. Jesus called him along with Peter, James and John
to leave behind their nets and be “fishers of men.” Are you bold like
Peter? Are you shy like Andrew? Jesus wants to use you, as you are,
to lead others out of darkness into the wonderful light of knowing Je-
sus as the way to heaven.

Sermon Text: John 1:35-42a

Sermon Theme:
“BE AN ANDREW!”

1) “Quietly” follow

2) “Quietly” lead

Ephesians 6:5-9
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of

heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when
their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you know
that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or
free.
9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you

know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favorit-
ism with him.

Mark 1:14-20
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, pro-

claiming the good news of God. 15 "The time has come," he

said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the
good news!"
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon

and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they
were fishermen. 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will
make you fishers of men." 18 At once they left their nets and fol-
lowed him.
19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Ze-

bedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20

Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebe-
dee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

John 1:35-42
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around,

Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?"

They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see."

So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was
about the tenth hour.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said

and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother
Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). 42 And he
brought him to Jesus.

SUMMER SERMON SERIES

John MacArthur wrote a book on the twelve disciples whose title we will be using as
the theme for our summer sermon series. The words below are from the book which
bears this title.

TWELVE ORDINARY MEN

How the Master shaped his disciples for service in God’s kingdom
and what he wants to do with you.

Who were these men?

They weren’t saints. They weren’t scholars.
They weren’t even religious sages.
What is most amazing about the disciples
is that Jesus ever selected them at all.
Among them, a handful of common fishermen,
a hated tax collector,
and an impulsive political zealot.

Sunday, June 14th Peter The Disciple with the Foot-Shaped Mouth
Today Andrew A Brother in the Background

HOW DO I PREPARE MY HEART FOR COMMUNION?

As you come to communion, ask yourself these questions?

1) Am I truly sorry for my sins?

2) Do I trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of my sins?
3) Do I believe that I receive the true body and blood of Christ in and with the
bread and wine?
4) Do I intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to amend my sinful life?

“A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup” (1
Corinthians 11:28).

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMMUNION

For the 10:00 a.m. service - the ushers will speak to the people who are sitting in
the side pews at the front of church BEFORE THE SERVICE and ask them to walk
to the back of church and down the center aisle for communion DURING the singing
of “O Christ, Lamb of God.” This custom is done at other churches in the WELS and
was suggested to us to still be meaningful, and at the same time, we hope that the
walking during the singing of this part of the communion liturgy will eliminate some
delay time for our communicants. The people in the side pews will continue to com-
mune first.

REPORT ON CHILDREN’S MINISTRY AREA -

CONTRACT SIGNED WITH McGILL
We are happy to report that the bids for our Children’s Ministry area have come in
for less money than was budgeted. In addition to these savings we are planning to
do some work on our own.
We are happy to have McGill Construction as our main contractor on the
project. McGill is the same company that built the addition to our church. They had
the lowest bid of any contractor.

A MAN AND HIS DREAM

Did you know that Steve Zambo operates
Salty Earth Pictures “right down the hill
from our church”? Steve’s mission is to
use media, such as, motion pictures, to
proclaim Christ to the nations. Steve is a
“man of many talents.” He and his wife, Beth, are blessed with a gracious spirit.
They’re “worth getting to know” and more importantly “worth supporting” financially
and in prayer, in their ministry and vision. Stop in also, and visit their resale shop
(which helps support their ministry). Say hello. Tell them you are their brother and
sister in Christ. If you are able to donate a few hours in the operation of their resale
shop, that will be much appreciated. They need helpers. Please call Beth Zambo
(920) 723-8021. Most importantly – PRAY for their ministry so that the media may
be used for godly influence in our nation and the world.

INVITATION TO A CONCERT—Thursday, June 25th @ 7:00 p.m.

Chris Dreisbach will appear in concert at Peace-Janesville on Thursday, June
25th, at 7:00 p.m. Chris performed there 2½ years ago, and is a member of our
WELS church in New Orleans. He sings and plays piano and guitar, writing much of
the music he sings with lyrics that reflect his own life in coming to faith as an adult
and now living in Christ. Peace Lutheran is planning a potluck supper at 5:30 p.m.
So bring a dish along and join them! There are no ticket prices for the concert; in-
stead a free-will offering will be taken to defray Chris’ traveling expenses. He will
also have several of his CD’s available for purchase.
This is a great opportunity to bring an unchurched friend since Chris freely talks
about his life before Christ was a part of it. Peace Lutheran is located on the corner
of Joliet & Osborne (1550 S. Osborne) in Janesville, a mile off Hwy. 51 (Center
Ave). Call 608-752-0258 for more information or check their web site at www.

REMEMBER MISSIONS THIS MONTH

The month of June is the time St. Paul's congregation is assigned to remember the
four missions listed on an insert , which has been placed on the Kiosk for those of us
who misplaced the insert. The Befriend a Mission (BAM) Program is organized by
the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society (LWMS). We will be sending the mission-
aries gift cards along with a greeting card from our congregation. The missionaries
appreciate the remembrances and gifts. If you would like to participate, please use
one of the gold envelopes in the back of your envelope packet and write "BAM" on it.
Please place your gift in the offering plate or bring it to the church office before the
end of June. We ask you to remember all missionaries in your prayers.

JEFFERSON COUNTY FAIR OUTREACH –July 8-12

While rules have changed at the fair park, and we are no longer able to give away
popcorn or lemonade, the WELS churches in Jefferson County are once again work-
ing together to sponsor an outreach booth at the county fair from July 8-12. Our
continuing goal is to give a friendly impression of WELS Christians to people in our
area as well as to give information about our churches and spread the Gospel. I
f you would be able to volunteer some time at the booth or make a donation to help
fund this project, please contact Floyd Pfeifer (920-563-4027), Jan Grandt (920-563-
5445), or Peter Schaewe (920-674-2922 or pschaewe@sjlwels.org) by Tuesday,
June 30. Sign up sheets are available in the Narthex or church office. Fair park
passes are available for volunteers. An informational meeting for the volunteers will
be held on Wednesday, July 1, 6:30 p.m., at St. John’s, Jefferson.

REPORT ON CHILDREN’S FUND

Last Sunday $ 954 was given to the Children’s Fund. This money is used to help
us provide a low student-teacher ratio in our school. Each gift is a valuable contribu-
tion to the General Fund for the support of the school.
Each week we need $ 1,298 to meet our goal. So far we have received
$ 47,044. This is an overall shortfall in the Children’s Fund of $ 17,859.
This shortfall is included in the shortfall for the Total Budget (listed at the end of the
bulletin) and is not in addition to that shortfall.
