READING AND WRITING LESSON PLAN 2

Introduction
This is a reading and writing lesson plan for English learners who are between beginner and
intermediate low/mid language proficiency level. The topic of this class is “hobby”. In this class,
I am going to introduce the wh-questions and future tense by means of one warm-up activity and
two class activities. Hopefully, at the end of class, students can ask and answer wh-questions and
develop sentences in future tense.

Brief Description of Classroom Setting

1. L2 learners between beginner and intermediate low/mid level. The first languages are
Chinese, Arabic, Korean and Spanish.
2. All learners are adults.
3. The topic of this lesson is “hobby”. Specifically, teacher concludes and reviews grammar
in last three class and lets students develop their own hobbies.
4. There are pair work and group work in class.

Pre-lesson Inventory
Lesson objectives:
1. Content Objective: Enable students to identify different hobbies and discuss what they
think about these hobbies.
2. Language Objectives:
a. Students should review wh-questions.
b. Enable students to use future tense and develop their hobbies in the future.

Teaching materials:
questions for activity 1 (appendix a)
reading passage about future tense (appendix b)
Equipment needed for class: doc cam
Assignments to collect from students: None
Special room arrangements: Movable desks and chairs.

Warm-up: Brainstorm (5 min)

Purpose: This activity can motivate class and activate the schemata. This is an activity about
vocabularies. In this activity, students are able to think about the words what they have learned in
previous three classes. Meanwhile, it lays a foundation for this class.
Procedures:
1. Students review words with hobbies in previous class. Students says as many hobby-related
words as possible; teacher writes them down on the board. (2 min).
2. Teacher asks students, “Do you remember wh-words you learned last week?” Students give
teacher wh-words and then discuss the hobby with wh-questions with partners. (3 min)
3. Follow-up question: After discussion, teacher asks how many people like these hobbies. For
example, the word is “jogging” Teacher asks, “How many of you like jogging?” Some
students raise hands. Teacher asks. “Why do you like jogging?” Students, “Because…”
Transitions: Now, students remember words again and wh-questions. We can skip to the next
part. In warm up activity, they just briefly introduce hobbies to partners or classmates. In next
activity, they have opportunity to share detailed hobbies with others.

Activity 1: Describe Hobbies (22 min)

Purpose: Students can collaborate in this activity. They can improve their reading, writing and
comprehension simultaneously.
Procedures:
1. Teacher shows a riddle with hobby (this riddle is from Nate or Africa).
You can do this alone but it is more fun with a partner or in a group. You can do this with
your friends. You need to move a lot. You can shake. You can hop. You can even
moonwalk. You need good music.
Students should find the information of “what, who, why, how” in this riddle. This is a
preparation for next step.
2. Ideally, three students are in one group. Each student writes a short paragraph about
his/her hobby; he/she just describes the hobby without name of it. A paragraph should
contain 8 to 10 sentences. Teacher shows five questions that Adele gave last class, and

students should develop their paragraphs according to these questions. Their paragraphs
should include questions but not be restricted by questions (10 min)
What is the name of my hobby?
Who can I practice this hobby with?
What will I need to practice this hobby?
Where can I practice this hobby?
How do I practice it?
3. Student A gives his/her paragraph to student B, and B reads the paragraph to student C,
student B and C should guess what the hobby is. Student A can give hint during the
process (3 min).
4. After B and C give the correct answer, they should express their own idea about this
hobby. For example, A describes “swimming”. B and C should tell group members
whether they like swimming, why or why not (3 min).
5. Switch the roles. Everyone should have opportunities to read and guess.
Transitions: I believe you are be able to express your hobbies, but now I’d like you to recall your
hobbies in the past. What were your hobbies in your childhood?

Activity 2: Put the Sentences in Correct Orders (18 min)

Purpose: This activity helps students to understand future tense. Students should get to know the
logical sequence in a paragraph. Additionally, they know the use of future tense and describe
what they want to try in the future.
Procedures:
1. Teacher asks students, “If you want to describe something in tomorrow, next week or
next year, what tense can you use? Past, present or future?” Students answer this
question. Teacher introduces 2 forms of future tense “be going to” and “will”. Will may
express social interaction (e.g. I will go to library tonight) and logical probability (e.g.
That will be librarian.)
a. Be going to has a meaning of intention and plan (e.g. I’m going to go fishing)
b. Mostly, you can use both in your sentences to indicate future (5 min).

2. Each group has 2 to 4 students. Teacher prepares a short paragraph written by future
tense, but makes every sentence separately. Teacher hands out these sentences to each
group.
3. Students should put the sentences in correct orders with partners (8 min).
4. After they finish this task, students shout out their answers and highlight the future tense
of verbs in the passage (5 min)
READING AND WRITING LESSON PLAN 6

Transition and Closure (5 min):

Students are required to talk about the top 3 hobbies they want to try in the future. They can
discuss with one partner and then share answers in class.

Appendix B
Hi! My name is Hannah and I am nine years old.
I am so excited because tomorrow my daddy’s going to take me to the zoo. I love the zoo!
First of all, we will see snakes! The last time I went to the zoo I saw the cutest tiny green snake. I
want to see more snakes!
Moreover, we will see the tigers.
I am going to roar at the tigers! Can you roar like a tiger too?
After seeing the tiger, maybe I’m going to find kangaroo. I will jump like a kangaroo when I see
the it!
When I see the penguins, I am going to waddle like them.
They look so funny when they walk!
Also, I will sing like the birds and I am going to flap my arms and fly with them too!
I am going to be a beautiful blue bird with a bright yellow beak!
My song will be the most beautiful song ever! We are going to find the giraffes too.
They have very long necks.
I will pretend that my neck is very long just like a giraffe!
I don’t like eating leaves like giraffes do. No, leaves taste awful! I am only going to pretend to eat
them.
Finally, my daddy’s going to let me buy something from the gift shop.
I don’t know what I will want but I can’t wait to see what there is!
We will have fun! I am so excited!
