The form of the library allows light to enter from a large sky light, which can be opened or closed. The sunlight then
strikes the wooden structure of the building and is reflected and diffused around the building to give an even and warm
light throughout the building.
The Space is lit both naturally and artificially. The book shelves are light artificial, to reduced UV damage but as you
move from the book shelves towards the desks the light becomes a mixture of artificial and diffused sunlight, but never
direct sunlight.
The buildings axis is oriented to the north as the sun rises, or sets, a shutter (as depicted in the top left) can be opened
or closed to stop direct sunlight entering the library spaces.
Technology 2 - Lighting Study

The site which we are to build on is a heavily wooded area. I have printed different
sillouted photos of tree canopys in different seasons and measured the change in
light levels
From the results we can see that the amount, approximatly, of light that penitrates
the aperture of this model is 8times more in the winter than it is in the summer, on
an identical overcast day. Simulating light snow fall on the glass reduced the light by
half.
On an overcast day, in summer, the solar radiation is five times that it is on a winter
day. 1

Lighting study render. These renders compare the amount of 1st June
day light allowed to enter the facility. The building has long
narrow low windows that allow light in during the morning and 5am
winter months but shade the room from the stonger midday
and summer radiation.

When a live latural load, such as a wind, the structure will not collapse because the
posts and beams are one continuous glue lam beam. Highlighted in blue above
Concept Detailing
Detailing when working with gluelam timber is important so moister doesn’t collect and
trigger the wood to decay eventually resulting in the structural failure of the component.

INITIALY I SAW I THOURGHT THE PROPERTIES EXHIBITED BY THE VENEER WOULD COULD BE USED AS A SHADING MACHANISM. WHEN IT WAS WET, MORE LIGHT-
LY TO BE CLOUDY CONDITIONS, THE APETURE WOULD OPEN AND WHEN IT WAS DRY, MORE LIGHTLY TO BE SUNNY CONDITIONS, THE APETURE WOULD CLOSE.
I THEN REALISED THAT IT COULD BE MORE USEFUL AS VENTILATION IN A HUMID SPACE, SUCH AS A SHOWER. REDUCING THE NEED FOR MECHANICAL VENTILA-
TION.
