SCIENCE UNIT 1 3A -3rd

1. How does our body find out about the world around us ?

Our body finds out about the world about us using our sense organs.

2. Sense organs are parts of our body that collect information from the surroundings.

3. We have 5 sense organs : a. eyes b. ears c. skin d. tongue e. nose.

4. Our sense organs send messages to our brain in the head by special paths.

5. Our brain help us to understand what is going on around us.

6. A. We see with our eyes. B. We hear with our ears. C. We feel with our skin.

D. We smell with our nose D. We taste with our tongue.

7. Our eyes make picture of the world around us much like how a camera does.

8. The eye is made up of the cornea, iris, pupil, lens and retina.

9. Function parts of the eye :

a. Cornea : The cornea is like a clear window and covers the front of the eye.

b. Iris : The iris like a shade on a window and lets just the right amount of light enter the eye.

c. Pupil : The pupil is the circular hole in the centre of the iris. The light enters the eye through
the

pupil.

d. Lens : The lens focuses the image we see onto a screen at the back of the eye.

e. Retina : The retina is the screen at the back of the. It sends messages to our brain to tell us

about the image we see.

10. Using our eyes to see example : a. helps us to collect information from books and lets us enjoy

Television programmes.

b. prevents us from hurting ourelves.

c. read a book.

11. Our ears help us to detect sounds.

12. There are three mai parts to the ear : a. outer ear. B. middle ear. C. inner ear.

13. a. Outer ear : The outer ear is made up of the pinna and ear canal.

b. Middle ear : The middle ear is made up of the eardrum.

c. Inner ear : The inner ear is made up of the cochlea.

14. Function : a. Pinna : The pinna collects sounds.

b. Ear Canal : The ear canal sends sounds onto the middle ear.
c. Eardrum : When sounds reach the eardrum, it shakes or vibrates. This helps

sounds each the inner ear.

d. Cochlea : When sounds reach the cochlea, it sends messages to our brain to tell

us about the sounds we hear.

15. Using our ears : hearing helps us to pick up sounds made by people and objects around us.

16. We can tell if sounds are loud or soft, pleasant, unpleasant.

17. Our skin covers our body.

18. Our skin is made up of an outer layer and inner layer.

19. Function : a. Outer layer : The layer of skin that we can see. It prevents dirt from getting into our

Body.

b. Inner layer : The inner layer of our skin. It structures that collect information about

things we touch. When we touch something, the structures send messages to our

brain to tell us how the thing feels.

20. Our lips and fingertips are more sensitive than other parts of our body.

21. We can feel if something is smooth or rough, hot or cold, hard or soft, dry or wet.

22. When something sharp pricks us, we feel pain.

23. Our tongue helps us to taste.

24. Tongue covered with little bumps.

25. These little bumps contain a lot of taste buds.

26. Tasting lets us knoew when the food we eat is sweet, sour, bitter or salty.
