should behave in the world. It is sometimes guided by a sense of connection to a higher presense.

Because of the diversity of human spiritual experience and the overlap of spirituality with religious practice,
it is often hard to delineate the exact impact of spiritual beliefs and actions. However, in recent years, a
number of studies of specific practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and prayer have shown that spiritual

health reduces stress, decreases anxiety and depression, increases a person’s ability to heal from illness and

cope with medical treatment, and can increase feelings of hope and optimism, among other positive
benefits.

Similar to developing physical fitness, developing spiritual health takes knowledge, guidance, commitment,
and consistency. Learning practices such as mindfulness, meditation, contemplation, right-mindedness,

prayer, and service, and doing them regularly, will help build a foundation of spiritual health.
