UNIT 3: The senses

Class type: 9th grade
Textbook: Going for Gold Intermediate, Longman
Type of lesson: acquiring new information
* The lesson provides grammar practice of The Gerund and Infinitive
Skills: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is: to provide students with the necessary practise for the
Gerund and the Infinitive

Didactic strategies:
 methods and procedures: conversation, observation ;
 organization: class work, group work, pair work, individual work;
 materials and equipment: textbook, handouts, charts, tables, language maximizer

Lesson Aims:

1. to create interest in the Gerund and Infinitive; to promote participation;


2. to raise expectations and involvement in the game;
3. to read and listen in order to confirm expectations;
4. to study the relevant tenses for the topic;
5. to practice the gerund and the infinitive
6. to understand and react positively to the tasks

PROCEDURE

Recent work : The students have already learnt some adjectives regarding personality and

have described the photos from page 23

Aim 6: to understand and react positively to the tasks

 T. checks homework with the Ss , focusing on adjectives

Activity 1 Interaction :T-Ss; Ss-T; classwork Timing: 10’


Writing/Speaking

Aim2: to raise expectations and involvement in the game

 T gives them the handouts and explains the task


 T writes on the blackboard the 9 adjectives
 Ss come to the blackboard and write the names of their classmates under the proper
category
 T asks those students if they really belong to that category

Writing/Reading, Speaking

Aim 1: to create interest in the Gerund and Infinitive; to promote participation

 T writes the title of the lesson on the blackboard and asks students if they know
something about how does the Infinitive look
 T writes some sentences with the gerund and the infinitive on the blackboard
Examples:
1. He avoided talking to her.
2. Tom agreed to help me.
3. She considered moving to New York.
4. Naomi arranged to stay with her cousin in Miami.
5. We enjoy hiking.
6. We decided to go to Hawaii.
7. He imagines working there one day.
8. I hope to begin college this year.
9. The job involves travelling to Japan once a month.
10. I learnt to speak Japanese when I was a kid.
11. They suggested staying at the hotel.
12. Frank offered to drive us to the supermarket.
13. We plan to go to Europe this summer.
14. She waited to buy a movie ticket.

 Ss say which one is which-come to the blackboard and underline them, writing G or I
 T tells Ss to pay attention to the verbs that need an infinitive or a gerund
 Ss put the verbs in 2categories – Verbs followed by Gerunds and Verbs followed by

 T. asks the Ss. to work in the language maximizers and do exercises 1 and 2 page 20-
21 together
 T. corrects the mistakes while doing the exercises

 Ss work in groups to make a short story for the images, using the verbs: hope, wait,
enjoy + infinitive or gerund
 T asks some Ss to read their story

 Ss listen to the song and complete the words to find out the story

Homework: ex 4 pag 26
Assessment: T. appreciates the Ss. who were active during the entire lesson by giving them
marks
