3. Types of Welds Worksheet
4. Types of Welds Worksheet 2
5. Basic Welds & Joints Test

Materials Needed:
Welds & Joints handouts, Test

Equipment Needed:
Examples of joints & types of welds; Pieces of metal for practice, computer for PPT
presentation

Learner

Prior knowledge of basic GTAW procedure & safety practices

Introduction

Introduction (LSI Quadrant I):

Give a job scenario where the worker is given orders by his boss to build a specific item.
Ask students what they would do to begin the build project. The discussion should
include how the design pieces are going to fit together and how do the students know
what type of “joining” of pieces will be best.
Outline

Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructor Notes:

Pass around examples of joints (discuss examples of several examples of various
times when various joints would be appropriate) beads & joints

Overview types of welds (pass around samples of

various beads)
Guided practice student handouts
Independent practice
Review
Test

Application

Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III):

Students take notes on handout during slide presentation.

Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III):

Have students choose or use an assigned partner to go into the shop to create one of
each type of joint. Provide students with the pieces necessary to complete the project.

Summary

Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV):

Ask individual students what type of weld/joint is present in examples shown

Evaluation

Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):

Teacher monitors during independent practice

Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):

Student completes test labeling welds & joints from shop samples. Key will be
determined by shop instructor’s chosen samples.

Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV):

Use of welds & joints will be applied in future shop experiences and in the work place.
