What to expect
A flash flood warning

night and will last through
this evening, according to
the National Weather
Service.
Rainfall is expected to
be within the 2- to 4-
inch range, with localized
measurements as much
as 6 inches..
The rain is expected to
persist throughout the
day, along with the
chance of thunderstorms.
Winds from the southeast
are expected to peak at
about 10 to 15 miles per
hour.
Rainfall could increase
throughout the day as a
low pressure front moves
up the East Coast.
Flood safety tips
■ Listen to area radio
and television stations
and NOAA Weather Radio
for possible flood warn-
ings and reports of flood-
ing in progress or other
critical information from
the National Weather
Service.
■ Be prepared to evacu-
ate at a moment’s notice.
■ When a flood or flash
flood warning is issued for
your area, head for higher
ground and stay there.
■ Stay away from flood-
waters. If you come upon
a flowing stream where
water is above your an-
kles, stop, turn around
and go another way. Six
inches of swiftly moving
water can sweep you off
your feet.
■ If you come upon a
flooded road while driv-
ing, turn around and go
another way. If you are
caught on a flooded road
and water is rising rapidly
around you, get out of the
car quickly and move to
higher ground. Most cars
can be swept away by
less than 2 feet of moving
water.
■ Keep children out of
the water. They are curi-
ous and can lack judg-
ment about running water
or contaminated water.
■ Be cautious at night
when it is harder to rec-
ognize flood danger.

Flash flooding is the major concern for
Carroll County and central Maryland.
“The streams are already pretty full from
the rain we had earlier this week, and
we’re expecting several inches of rain;
there’s no place for it to go,” Laxton said.
Laxton said Union Bridge and areas near
the Patapsco River are the usual trouble
locations for flooding in the county.
“The people who typically see flooding
on their properties when we have heavy
rain are going to see flooding on their
properties again,” she said.
McDonough said he didn’t expect the
conditions to cause too much of a problem
for commuters on major roads, such as
Md. 140.
“I think the bigger issue will be for peo-
ple that have to wander around, say up
