Definition and usage

Vocabulary is commonly defined as "all the words known and used by a particular
person". Knowing a word, however, is not as simple as merely being able to recognize or use it.
There are several aspects of word knowledge that are used to measure word knowledge.

Degree of knowledge
Every people have a range of abilities that are often referred to as degree of knowledge. This
simply indicates that a word gradually enters a person's vocabulary over a period of time as more
aspects of word knowledge are learnt. Roughly, these stages could be described as:

1. Never encountered the word.

2. Heard the word, but cannot define it.
3. Recognize the word due to context or tone of voice.
4. Able to use the word and understand the general and/or intended meaning, but cannot clearly
explain it.
5. Fluent with the word – its use and definition.

of the most important micro skills to develop. Of course, all micro skills such as grammar,
vocabulary, pronunciation are very important. But all will be difficult if you communicate
without vocabulary rather than without grammar.

Kind of Vocabulary
In the vocabulary we have, Active & Passive Vocabulary. There are several differences
between:

 Words that we understand and use (Active Vocabulary)

 Words that we understand but we cannot use. (Passive Vocabulary)
With active vocabulary, you can listen and understand. Hearing the vocabulary used prompts
you to recall its meaning. In other words, you are being made to recall it. So it’s passive
vocabulary.

Problems of Vocabulary
Most people have passive vocabulary that is more than active vocabulary. But because it is rarely
exposed, what comes out of the mouth is only a limited vocabulary called active vocabulary. So,
actually the core of the problem is not the number of vocabulary, but rather the ability to remember
and explain the vocabulary of our brain memory.

For example the real, as long as we live, we certainly have many friends right? Now, can we
memorize and list all the friends we have had from toddlers until now? So many, we will not be able to
memorize for sure. But if we meet one of our friends among a crowd of people we don't know, can we
remember it? Of course it can be because only he we know among the crowd.
