PROCEDURE DOC.

NO : EFEPL/SCIPL/SOP/WC
FOR Rev: 00
WRAPPING & COATING Date: 20.09.12

INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of the procedure is to provide detailed methodology for implementing specific procedure
for Wrapping and coating for underground pipes.

PROCEDURE:

A. STORAGE:
1. The pypkote tape rolls must be placed in a covered place or should be covered by polythene if stored
outside.
2. The rolls will be stacked in such a manner that they will not collapse.
3. The primer can be kept in a covered place or open space.

B. SURFACE PREPARATION:

1. The pipe is made free of oil grease etc., by proper cleaning by cloth or by wire brushing in the local areas.
2. The cleaned exterior of the pipe surface shall be protected from condition of high humidity, rainfall or
surface moisture.
3. All cleaned surface shall be coated immediately.

C. PRIMER APPLICATION:

1. Prior to primer application the pipe shall be cleaned to remove any wetness contamination.
2. Before removing the primer from the drum, it should be thoroughly agitated to ensure uniformity of the
primer.
3. The primer is then to be applied uniformly by means of a brush on the cleaned surface of the pipe;
leaving minimum drops or runs and then allowed to become touch dry.

D. TAPE INSTALLATION:

1. After the surface is primed, 4 mm pypkote tape is applied over the pipe by thermo-fusion process.
2. An LPG torch is applied onto the lower face of the tape till the polymeric mix attains shiny appearance.
3. The primed surface may be gently heated by a run of LPG torch and the tape is then adhered to the
primer-coated surface and Overlaps of minimum 20mm shall be maintained.

4. As far as possible the tapes should be applied over the pipe just prior to burial to avoid damage to coating
during transportation of the coated pipes.
5. In case any damage takes place during transportation the same will be repaired by cleaning that place and
applying fresh tape coating at the damaged place.
Note: The Wrapping and Coating should be carried out by skilled workmen to avoid holidays, air gap and
extra overlap to ensure more life of coating and hence the pipe and the system.

Quality Checks:

1. All the coated and wrapped pipes shall be tested with an approved high voltage Holiday Detector
equipped with a positive signaling device to indicates any faults, holes, breaks or conductive particles in
protective coating.
2. When selecting test voltage, consideration should be selected on the basis of maximum coating thickness
likely to be encountered. For this application the recommended voltage is minimum 10 - 12 V.
3. The Holiday testing must be documented in the Holiday testing format.

Safety precautions:

1. Check whether continuous supervision is available to carryout work safely.

2. Check whether the workplace is safe to work and issue the work permit.
3. Check whether the cylinders are held in upright position.
4. Check whether LPG cylinder is without leakages and proper condition.
5. Check whether after finishing the work close the cap properly.
6. Check whether the wrapping coating specific PPE such as Rubber hand gloves during painting application
and Leather hand gloves during heat application are used.
7. Check whether combustible materials were removed from the work area.
8. Check whether all the safety precautions required for hot work are considered.
9. Check whether area is barricaded as and when required.
10. Check whether the area is provided with fire extinguishers.
