23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
There is much to rejoice about as we
listen to today’s readings. Isaiah reminds
us: “Courage! Do not be afraid”. And then
tells the people and us, that the “eyes of the
blind shall be opened; the ears of the deaf
unsealed; the lame shall leap like the deer;
the tongues of the dumb sing for joy”. This
promise is fulfilled in Jesus.
He goes to a pagan territory and is
presented with a Gentile man who is deaf
and has a speech impediment. This man
would have lived in a world of silence. A
very lonely and isolated experience and
into the bargain, people would have said he
must be a sinner to have these disabilities.
This is completely untrue.
Jesus goes to great length to cure the
man. He took him aside from the crowd and
gave his undivided attention. He saved him
from the curiosity of the gawkers!
Notice
Jesus didn’t say
anything – it
would have
been wasted on
a deaf man. He
touched him
and made him feel what he couldn’t hear.
He put spittle on the man’s tongue. Spittle
as sign of healing, (never mind health and
safety)! We talk about licking one’s
wounds in order to be healed. He then told
the man to keep silent! What a hope, after
such a cure!
The message for us is: hearing and
speech are great gifts. But sometimes we
don’t hear or listen, so we may as well be
deaf! We have tongues, but we don’t use
the power of speech when we should, we
remain silent. There are so many who have
no voice of their own – we need to speak on
their behalf. We heard about the orphans
and the widow in last Sunday’s gospel.
They are a reminder of the many “little
people” whom we need to stand up for. We
need to have our voices heard in the
streets, our homes, our M.Ps need to hear
from us; our political and religious leaders
too. Yes, speech and hearing are gifts to be
used.
I am mindful of the movie – ‘The King’s
Speech’. How easily we take the power of
speaking for granted.
THANKS to those parents who have
registered their children in the First
Communion Programme – 32 in all? It
would seem that some children have not
yet been included. We also have 20
candidates preparing for the sacrament of
confirmation. As the programmes begin
very soon, please register to ensure
inclusion in the programme.
DELEGATION IN GERMANY: As you
read these words I should be in Dusseldorf,
Germany. I’ve been invited to represent
the International Imrali Delegation at the
Kurdish Culture and Arts Festival. This will
include speeches and representation at the
event. Please pray for peace in the Middle
East, especially Syria, which is the focus of
the two day event. Thanks to Fr John
Beatty who will stand-in in my absence.

FILM NIGHT

showing "The Agony and the Ecstasy"
telling the story of how Michelangelo
painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
