QA – Rectangle

Rectangle
A parallelogram in which all the four angles at vertices are right (i.e., 90 ), is called a
rectangle.
Properties
1) Opposite sides are parallel and equal.
2) Opposite angles are equal and of 90

3) Diagonals are equal and bisect each other,

Not necessarily True
1) Diagonals do not necessarily bisect each other at right angles.
2) Diagonals are not necessarily are angle bisectors
3) All 4 sides are not necessarily equal

Mensuration
1) Area of a rectangle = length x breadth (= l x b)

2) Diagonals of a rectangle = √
3) Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 (l + b)
4) Area of four walls of a room = 2 (l + b) h
5) For the given perimeter of rectangles, a square has maximum area.

Others
1) When a rectangle is inscribed in a circle, the diameter of the circle is equal to the
diagonal of the rectangle.

2) The figure formed by joining the mid-points of the adjacent sides of a rectangle is a
rhombus.
3) The quadrilateral formed by joining themed-points of intersection of the angle
bisectors of a parallelogram is a rectangle.

Solved Examples:
1) The length and breadth of a rectangular hall are 24 m and 10 m respectively:
a. Find the perimeter of hall.
b. Find the area of the floor of hall.
c. Find the maximum possible length of the rod that can be put on the
floor.
d. If the height of the hall is 168 meters find the longest rod which can fit
in the hall.

a) Perimeter = 2(24 + 10) = 68 m

b) Area of floor = 10 x 24 = 240 m2
c) Length of diagonal = √ = 26m
NOTE: The maximum possible length of any rod that can be placed on a rectangular floor is
equal to the diagonal of the floor of the hall.

d D
B b

d) The longest rod which can fit is the diagonal across the room i.e. from one end on
the ceiling to the opposite end on the floor and its length is given as equal to
√ =√ = 170

2) One side of a rectangular lawn is 11 m and its diagonal is 61 m. Find the area of the
field.
Diagonal =61= √ =√
Therefore length = 60
Area =

3) The length of a rectangle is 1 cm more than its breadth. The diagonal is 29 cm. Find
the area of the rectangle.

and √ √ =29

4) The length of a wall is 7/5 times of its height. If the area of the wall be 1260 m2.
What is the sum of the length and height of the wall?
Let the length be 7x and height be 5x
then
Therefore

5) A rectangular grassy lawn is 17 m by 15 m. It has a gravel path 1.5m. wide all around
it on the outside. What is the area of the path.

1.5m 14

20

Ans:
Area of lawn = 20 x 14= 280 m2
Total area (lawn + path) = (20 + 3) x (14 + 3)
= 23x17 = 391m2
Area of path (only) = 391 - 280 = 111 m2

6) Find the cost of carpeting a room 15m long and 8 m wide with a carpet 40 cm broad
at 60 paise per metre
Ans:
Area of carpet = Area of room

QA – Rectangle

l 0.4 = 15 8(60cm = 0.6m)

l = 300m
Cost of carpeting the floor = rate x length of carpet
= 0.6 300 =Rs. 180.00

7) The dimensions of a lawn are in the ratio 4:1 and its area is 2/5 hectares. What is the
length of the lawn?
Ans:
l b = 4x x=
x=100
length =4x=400m

8) A room is 15 m long, 6 m broad and 7 m high. Find the cost of white washing the four
walls of room at Rs. 8.5 per m2, white washing is not to be done on the doors and
windows, which occupy 60m2.
Ans:
Area of 4 walls of a room = 2(15 + 6) 7 = 294 m2
Net area of 4 walls = 294 - 60 = 234 m2
Cost of white washing = 234 8.5 = Rs. 1989

9) The ratio between the sides of a floor of a room is 5: 2. The cost of white washing
the ceiling of the room at 50P per square m is Rs. 245 and the cost of papering the
wall at 10 P per square metre is Rs. 98. The height of the room is:

Ans:
Area of ceiling

Now since l b = 5x : 2x
l b = 10x2 = 490m2
l 35 and b = 14m
Now Area of the 4 walls = = = 980 m2

Height =
