C Reading

This is Mickey. He goes to work by bus every day.

Read Mickey’s description of his day.

I live in London. I have a big house and I live with my

wife, Justine. I wake up at 7.30am. I take a shower in
the bathroom. Then I go to the kitchen and I eat toast and I drink coffee. I
read the newspaper for ten minutes and I watch some TV. Next, I leave the
house and go to catch the bus. I catch the bus at 8.15am. I arrive at work at
about 8.45am. On Saturdays, I sleep!

without the __________

Teacher Notes
Common verbs in English, Present
Target Language:
Simple first person singular conjugation.
Duration: 50 minutes

1 Structure and Timing (all times approximate)

A. Warmer (10 minutes)

B. Vocabulary (10 minutes)
C. Reading (10 minutes)
D. Exercise (10 minutes)
E. Game (10 minutes)

Total: 50 minutes.

2 Procedure

A. Warmer

The aim of today’s lesson is for students to see affirmative sentences using the
Present Simple and for them to learn some basic everyday verbs. There will also be
some focus on how verbs are conjugated. This is an ideal lesson to do before exposing
your students to more complicated language such as third person –s or the
interrogative form.

Seeing as today’s focus is on basic conjugation using the Present Simple and not just
the verb “to be”, we begin by looking at a phrase in the Present Simple that is almost
universally known, “I love you”.

After you have indentified the different languages with your students and they have
answered the questions, you might like to highlight differences in syntax between
English and the students’ mother tongue.

Answer Key

Te amo – Spanish
Je t’aime – French
Ich liebe dich – German
Mina rakastan sinua – Finnish
Seni seviyorum – Turkish
Ik hou van jou - Dutch

B. Vocabulary

If your students are learning these verbs for the first time, ensure they are recording
them in some type of vocabulary book, with translations and example sentences. For
each verb, ask your students to put it into the correct box depending on when we
usually do this activity. If you have a stronger class, you can also consider adding
some extra verbs at this point.

C. Reading

Read the paragraph for your students. Then ask them to read it again to themselves,
marking or underlining the verbs in the text. Write one of the infinitive verbs from
Section B on the board and next to it, write the same verb conjugated in the Present
Simple first person singular.

Ask your students how it has changed: the verb has stayed the same, the “to” has
been removed. When you are sure your students have all understood this, you can
lead them through the two rules printed below the reading. Both of these rules are
likely to be quite different from what your students find in their own language.

Now go through the other verbs used in the reading, showing that each use (e.g. I go,
I drink, I leave, etc) follows the same rules.

Answer Key

1. To
2. Before

D. Exercise

Put student into pairs to complete the matching activity. The verbs used are the same
ones from the previous reading.

Answer Key

Go To school
Arrive At 9am
Eat Toast
Sleep In my bed
Catch A bus
Watch TV
Read A book
Live In Paris
Have 3 children
Wake At 7.30am
Drink Beer
Leave The house

E. Game

This is a simple memory game which uses the cards printed on the final page of this
lesson plan, after these Teacher Notes. Each student takes a card and says “Every
morning, I…” plus whatever is written on their card. The next student does the same
and included his/her card plus the verb from the previous student, thus creating a
longer and longer chain of verbs.
