We are a non-profit organization of motorcycle en-
thusiasts from all walks of life. We lobby and educate

The Chief
Hi everyone, as always I hope this newsletter
finds all well and in great health and spirits.
As of this writing the Southwest chapter is now
officially 30 years young as we celebrated out
30th anniversary at the Paradise Tiki hut in the
Cape we did it as part of our regular weekly
bike night and it was a tremendous success,
thanks goes out to the Peace River chapter for
their attendance, they came out with about 15
to 20 members to help us celebrate and im sure
a great time was had by all in attendance, also
thanks goes out to our VP Wayne and also to
Babs for all their help in planning the party.
We had a couple guest chapters at our meeting
this month, they included Estero River chapter
and Caloosahatchee thanks to those guys for
their support of the Southwest chapter, Tammy
president of Estero River personally invited us
out to the throttleween celebration at the San
Carlos Country Club anyone wanting to attend
this event let me know we will all ride together.
After this months meeting we all took a ride up
to Snook Haven to join with Peace River and
West Coast chapters at this years Pre Daytona
event. We all had a great time and a fantastic

day even if we got held up by the tremendous
amounts of rain in the afternoon.
I am preparing to head out for Spooks n Scoots
right after I submit this report to Babs, I have
been working on a project for Spooks and am
just doing the finishing touches it will be do-
nated to Hillsborough chapter for the annual
spooks event it is made entirely from old dele-
gate sticks check it out when you are up at
spooks as im sure it will be part of the memorial
for many years to come.
Thanks also goes out to CJ for heading up the
Baywalk event down on the beach this past
month she was down there representing
ABATE and the Southwest chapter. Great job
and thanks.
Be sure to thank Birdie, Smokie and Richie
when you get the chance as they have been
running around to all the schools and present-
ing our MSAP for the past 6 weeks they do a
fantastic job with this and those folks are the
reason the Southwest chapter continues to be
the premier safety chapter in the state.
In closing thanks to all that keep this chapter
going you know who you are and although we
don’t say it enough I just want to say thank you
to all the people that go out of their way to
make ours the fantastic chapter that we are.

From the desk of your VP
Hello Everyone,
The good weather is approaching and so
are many events, good riding and fellow-
ship. The past few months have been
challenging. The 5 Star event and chapter
anniversary parties are behind us. What
does your chapter need now? YOU! We
need full participation from ALL members
to help make your chapter successful.
Some noted changes have been made.
Wednesday night Bike night has been
moved to the Paradise Tiki Hut in Cape
Coral. This is fast becoming a place to
meet, with good food, good service and
good music. Why not come down and
support your chapter. We will be adding
vendors and the 50/50 in hopes to help
generate funds to keep the chapter alive.
Next, I need your help. As VP, my job is to
set up events. I can do a pretty good job
coordinating things but it is up to the
members to step up and help out. If eve-
ryone helps, less time is needed from
you. Why not volunteer an hour of your
time at the next event. Speaking of
events, each month our events, as well as
the other 4 chapters in the 5 Star, will be
listed in our newsletter, thanks, Babs. If
something peaks your interest, let me
know how you can help. Coming up is the
Christmas run to Sandy Park, The Life
House Childrens Home and possibly Sun-
shine Village. Other suggestions have
been made, thanks Scott Turner for your
suggestions. With that in mind, I also
want to let you know that I approached
Peace River Chapter President, Greg and
VP Darrell, and their chapter will be help-
ing out and joining in on our Christmas
run this year. I look forward to this being
a successful event. We need donations
for this and if you can help out or know
someone interested in donating, don’t
hesitate to ask.
Also, we will set up a ride after our 4th
Sunday meetings so come with a full tank
and enjoy the ride.
In closing, I ask again for your support of
your chapter. We can’t do it alone and if
it were not for our active members, we’d
be riding alone.

Hey Y‟all,
Greetings from the Great Sandy South!
Southwest Chapter has completed another
semester in Lee County High schools.
The schools we attended and educated
were Mariner, North Fort Myers, Island
Coast, Fort Myers High, and Lehigh Sen-
ior. We taught a total of 24 Classes from
August 24th through September 25th with
a total of 514 Students present.
WE WOULD RATHER EDUCATE
THAN LEGISTLATE.
We would also like to share the comments
from the teachers; “This program is neces-
sary and powerful for all Drivers Education
students. The instructors present a fabu-
lous, hands-on package complete with real
life situations. ABATE has been a priority
in my program for three years. I would
recommend this team to anyone. I am
grateful to your group. Thank You.” Kathy

North Fort Myers High School.

A LETTER TO LIZBETH’S TEAM
Hi Ryan,
'TEDDYBEAR' here from ABATE of Florida,
Inc., Southwest Chapter. I wish to extend my
sincerest congratulations to Lizbeth for her
victory in the Republican primary.
Today, at our monthly chapter meeting,
I called on all our members to fully support
Lizbeth's campaign for the Senate District 27
seat. The consensus was unanimous.
The president of the Estero River Chapter was
also present at our chapter meeting, she an-
nounced publicly that the Estero River Chapter
already supports Lizbeth's candidacy.
Please bare in mind that ABATE of Florida,
Inc. cannot endorse candidates due to our tax
status. However, our state lobbyist, James
"Doc" Reichenbach, can endorse candidates.
However, he will only endorse "motorcycle
friendly" candidates, which Lizbeth is.
I intend to forward this, along with other infor-
mation regarding Lizbeth's campaign, to our
State Legislative Trustee, Darrin "Scribe"
Brooks, and ask him to include Lizbeth on his
motorcycle friendly candidate list for Senate
District 27.

Also, ABATE of Florida, Inc. has sent your
campaign a survey via e-mail. I urge Lizbeth to
fill this survey out. It is easy to fill out, and Liz-
beth is already familiar with the issues.
I understand that at this phase of the election
cycle, candidates are inundated with surveys
and must prioritize their time. However, this
one I urge you to pay attention to.
The results of this survey will be announced at
our October State Meeting and published in
our state newsletter. I would like to see Liz-
beth's name included there. If you need any
further information regarding this survey
please e-mail me and I will supply any infor-
mation you require.
I would also like to remind you that our chapter
newsletter is still open to your campaign. If
you have anything that you would like to put in
there, send it to me and I will see to it that it is
published. Once again, congratulations.

PS. This is Tom. The most meaningful
Christmas I ever had was the first Christ-
mas after receiving Jesus Christ as my
Lord and Savior! I thought, "Now, I am a
Christian celebrating Christmas!" It was a
whole new feeling and concept that has
never changed in the last 36 years. The
only exceptions are that the true meaning
of Christmas has matured and become life
changing, as God has consumed more of
my life. I can finally comprehend that the
perfect gift for Christmas is the gift that
God gave us. For God so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life. - John
3:16
It only takes a moment of time to receive
Him. Please pray. “Dear God, the God of
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, my heavenly
Father, I confess that I am a sinner and
have been separated from You. I ask for-
giveness of my sins. I repent and accept
this gift of repentance and I wish to be free
in You. I confess with my mouth that your
son Jesus is my savior and died for me. I
believe in my heart that You raised Him
from the dead. I receive Jesus into my
heart and ask Him to become the center of

MINNESOTA CLAIMS VICTORY FOR
CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE BUILDERS
The state patrol in Minnesota, like many other
police agencies, use license plate scanners in
their patrol cars that can read up to 1,000 plates
per minute, but they are unable to read the verti-
cal plates on some custom motorcycles. “It didn’t
take too much to sneak a new law through and
after the 2008 session vertical plates were illegal,”
said Todd Riba, ABATE of MN Legislative Di-
rector, “but not for long.”
ABATE of Minnesota’s lobbying team and State
Coordinator started to work on the problem,
and State Senators Amy Koch and Ray Van-
deveer stepped forward to carry their bill.
The state patrol didn’t want to give up its ability
to read motorcycle plates, but ABATE didn’t
want the custom bike folks to lose the right to
trick out their rides. It took a lot of creative
thinking to come up with a solution, but in the
end that’s what happened. The bill passed and
the Governor signed it into law, becoming effec-
tive August 1st.
Here is how it works: the DVS will offer vertical
reading license plates. You will be able to mount
these plates in vertical license plate brackets and
law enforcement’s scanners will still be able to
read them.
The plates can be ordered just like vanity plates
and riders will have to pay an extra fee, but these
new vertical reading plates should keep you out
of trouble and if you sell the bike you can keep
the plate for your next custom ride.
HABITUAL OFFENDER HELD WITHOUT
BAIL IN CYCLIST’S DEATH
A Westerly, Rhode Island woman has been or-
dered held without bail on charges that she
struck and killed a motorcyclist with her car.
Laura Reale, 27, did not enter a plea at a July
22nd arraignment in Washington County Supe-
rior Court on an indictment of driving to endan-
ger, death resulting.
According to an NBC 10 news report, a judge
ordered her held without bail after a prosecutor
said Reale had been hiding marijuana use by sub-
mitting another person's urine samples. She will
be held until her lawyer can find her a drug treat-
ment program.
Reale is accused of running a red light in West-
erly on May 16 and crashing into a motorcycle
driven by 27-year-old Colin B. Foote. Reale has a
history of violations, with 27 moving-vehicle vio-
lations on record.
Foote's death led to a new state law aimed at pre-
venting habitual traffic offenders from driving.
KEYSTONE MOTORCYCLE
SAFETY CAMPAIGN
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
has announced a free online program celebrating
the freedom of motorcycling called the “Live
Free Ride Alive” program. "The campaign re-
minds riders to take it easy out there and accept
personal responsibility for their actions,” said a
PennDOT spokesperson. “It addresses issues of
drinking and riding, speeding, and being prop-
erly trained and licensed to operate a motorcy-
cle."
Pennsylvania riders can enhance their operating
skills and safety awareness by taking free training
offered through Pennsylvania's Motorcycle Safety
Program. The live courses are free to Pennsyl-
vania residents and are held from March
through October at approximately 70 sites across
the state. Motorcycle permit holders who success-
fully complete the course will be issued a motor-
cycle license.

 NEW JERSEY LAWMAKERS INTRODUCE
FEDERAL GANG LEGISLATION According
to information recently circulated by ABATE
of the Garden State, New Jersey congressional
representatives are pushing new federal legisla-
tion to deter gang activity.
In early August, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez
(D-N.J.) introduced one bill in the U.S. Senate
while Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th Dist.) intro-
duced a version in the House of Representa-
tives.
The legislation claims to address “criminal
street gang problems” from several angles.
It would fund billions of dollars in programs
for at-risk youth, including $5.5 billion in
grants for state and federal programs.
Menendez and Pallone also want $3.5 billion
in grants over five years for police departments
to fight gangs.
The legislation would also create or increase
federal penalties for gang activities. For exam-
ple, engaging in a "pattern of criminal gang
activity" - meaning committing two or more
crimes related to gang membership - could
send someone to prison for up to 30 years.
AGING ROAD WARRIORS
AT HIGHER RISK
Continuing to ride a motorcycle may keep
some senior citizens young at heart, but as the
riding population grows older they are more
likely to be injured or die as a result of a mis-
hap when compared to their younger counter-
parts due to factors associated with aging.
Researchers at Rochester University Medical
Centre in New York released findings earlier
this spring indicating that half of all motorcy-
clists needing emergency treatment in 2005
were over 40, double the number in 1993, and
accidents involving riders in that age group
were twice as likely to be fatal as those involv-
ing younger bikers.
Of all injured riders included in the study,
those aged 50 to 59 were the fastest-growing
group, while those between 20 and 29 were
the most rapidly declining group.
Age-related changes, such as decreases in bone

strength and brain size, may make older riders
more susceptible to injury. Other factors asso-
ciated with aging, such as impaired vision, de-
layed reaction time, and altered balance con-
tribute to motorcycle crashes in this popula-
tion.
In the study, which was published in the
March issue of the American Surgeon, re-
searchers using the National Trauma Data-
bank reviewed the records of 61,689 motorcy-
clists aged 17 to 89 years involved in a motor-
cycle crash between 1996 and 2005.
The average age of motorcyclists involved in
crashes steadily increased over the study pe-
riod, which is consistent with published statis-
tics from the Motorcycle Industry Council
which report that the average age of motorcy-
cle ownership rose from 33 years in 1998 to
40 years in 2003.
WEIRD NEWS: PYRAMID POWER USED
TO STOP TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Since the days of ancient Egypt, pyramids have
been credited with supernatural or paranormal
properties, and now their putative powers are
being harnessed by Indian police to reduce
road accidents.
After meeting with an expert in Vastu, an an-
cient Hindu system of construction similar to
Chinese Feng Shui, traffic officers in Nagpur
are strategically installing small pyramids at
accident-prone sites in the city in hopes their
claimed positive energy can stop deadly
crashes.
Vastu expert Sushil Fatehpuria, who offered
his services free of charge, said that each 30
centimetre tall pyramid will have a copper bot-
tom and five smaller pyramids inside. "I think
the accidents are caused by negative energies.
So we need to minimize or convert the nega-
tive energy into positive ones," he said. "I will
energize the pyramids. I will transfer my posi-
tive thoughts into the pyramids."
A combination of an increase in drivers, many
of them untrained, poor road planning and
lax law enforcement have made India's roads
the most dangerous in the world, with more
than 114,000 fatalities each year.

EDUCATION CYCLES
The United States has donated 115 motorcycles
worth $524,398 to an African educational cen-
ter that coordinates tutors in the Uganda cities
of Lango, Acholi and Teso.
The motorcycles were handed over by the U.S.
Agency for International Development to
Uganda team leader, Elise Ayers, at Asuret Core
Primary Teachers College in Soroti in May.
Ayers said the motorcycles would enable the tu-
tors make a minimum of three visits to each
school in a term to mentor and provide profes-
sional support to teachers.
INDONESIAN CAPITAL LIMITS
MOTORCYCLE TRAFFIC
City officials in Jakarta are mulling over schemes
to limit the number of motorcycles allowed in
certain areas during peak hours to help unsnarl
the city’s acute traffic jams. The Indonesian Mo-
torcycle Industry Association estimates there are
about 35 million motorcycles in usable condi-
tion in the country, and in the capital city of 8.5
million people there are nearly one motorcycle
for every person and growing by nearly a thou-
sand new bikes every day.
This extraordinarily high number of motorcycles
has exacerbated the city's already awful traffic,
especially during rush hour, and plans are in
place to begin banning bikes from a number of
main thoroughfares in this mostly Muslim na-
tion after the holy holiday of Ramadan, requir-
ing riders to continue their journeys by public
transportation.
Motorcycle numbers have been increasing for six
years throughout the country, driven by afflu-
ence and affordable credit schemes. Today, a
new motorcycle can be purchased with an initial
down payment of Rp 500,000 (US$50).

Good Morning Freedom Fighters:
From ABATE of Florida, Inc.:
The primaries are over and after the dust has settled
ABATE of Florida came out pretty well throughout all
the races in Florida. I hope that everyone who is a member
of ABATE of Florida, Inc. was able to get out and vote.
With all the opportunities to vote, there are very few good
reasons why you could not vote. After all we had early
voting Monday thru Saturday until 7pm. The absentee bal-
lot is a great choice for those that will be out of town or not
able to leave the home for medical reasons. There is no
way that you could have forgotten, the ads were almost non
-stop on TV, Radio, the mail, and even the pesky phone
calls.
I have heard from one member that they just did not want
to vote. My response was to question why they are a mem-
ber of a motorcycle rights organization if they are not will-
ing to help the cause by voting. If they just want to belong
to a group there are plenty of other groups to join where
you do not have to raise a finger to help others.
I offer this quote from "An American Crisis" by Thomas
Payne. This was written during the lowest point of the
American Revolution in 1776 when many Americans had
started to grow weary of the fight for freedom.
"THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer
soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink
from the service of their country; but he that stands by it
now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.
Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this
consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more
glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem
too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its
value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its
goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an
article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated."
These words that Thomas Paine wrote more than 230 years
ago are just as powerful and relevant now as they have ever
been. We face a crisis unprecedented in the motorcycling
community, with forces rallying around us to strip away
our very rights and freedoms. From illegal profiling, to
national helmet legislation, from discriminatory noise regu-

lations to vertical tags and transponders, not to mention
being denied medical insurance coverage, we stand at-
tacked and threatened on all sides. “Where do you stand?
And what will you defend?”
This election season you have the opportunity to stand
among the modern patriots of the motorcycling rights
movement in defense of our freedoms by getting to know
your candidates, finding out where they stand on our issues
and then supporting those who support us. Will you take up
the challenge? Or will you be counted a “sunshine patriot,”
someone who fights only when it is convenient?
I urge you to remember why you joined ABATE of Flor-
ida, Inc. in the first place! Now is not the time to shrink
from your ability to help in this continued fight for the
rights of all motorcyclists. ABATE of Florida, Inc. stands
up for the rights of EACH and EVERY motorcyclist in
Florida. We do not care what they ride; we just want them
to have the freedom to ride. It is not about helmets, it is
about the freedom of individual choice to decide for our-
selves what to wear. It is about a legal mode of transporta-
tion and the fight to keep the Legislature from stomping on
our rights.
ABATE of Florida, Inc. is the leader in protecting motor-
cycle rights in Florida, and as all leaders, we attract the
slings and arrows of those that want to see something bet-
ter than them fail. The vast majority of the motorcyclist in
Florida will never know how ABATE of Florida, Inc. has
preserved and protected their ability to ride. Just like the
vast majority of Americans will never know what our vet-
erans' throughout our history did to create and preserve our
freedom to cast our individual vote as to how we will be
governed.
Now that the general election is upon us we need every
member to exercise their freedom and vote. We can not
shrink from our duties to protect the freedom and rights of
motorcyclist across Florida.
I also urge you to remember this brothers and sisters, It
doesn‟t matter how powerful the foe, or how strong their
position may appear. We hold the high ground, for we fight
from a position of freedom.
Thomas Paine said it best as he penned the last paragraph
of his now-famous letter. “If a thief breaks into my house,
burns and destroys my property, and kills or threatens to

Just wanted to let you know that ABATE of Florida, Inc.
has just sent out a survey to all the State Senate, Represen-
tatives, and Governor candidates. The survey will be
closed on Sept 30th so that the results will be ready for the
October State Delegate meeting. I want to thank Lockdown

the candidates can very easily respond. I wish that you
could see the way that it was put together, Lockdown made
ABATE of Florida, Inc. proud by putting together a pol-

2) Currently, a motorist can be convicted of injuring or
killing a motorcyclist, bicyclist, pedestrian, etc. and only
receive a $86 fine for a “failure to yield” traffic citation.
Would you support a Bill that would give a Judge addi-
tional stiffer penalty options when sentencing the guilty
party?
3) Do you support blood testing on all parties involved in
an accident resulting in serious injury and/or a fatality ?
4) In 2007, 2008, and 2009, motorcycle deaths in Florida
have been reduced 0.77%, 2.9%, and 25.1%.

due to the Florida Legislature allocating funds to ABATE
of Florida, Inc. for the sole purpose of motorcycle safety
awareness. Would you support continuing to set aside
funds so that ABATE of Florida, Inc. may continue to in-
crease motorcycle safety awareness to the public?
5) Are you familiar with ABATE of Florida, Inc.?
In just one day we have received back over 25 responses
and the feedback will be very helpful to us in the following
ways:
We will be able to disperse through you how each candi-
date responded along with their comments.
We will have a written record of what they will or will
not support this legislative session.
We can identify which candidates are not familiar with
ABATE and then we can educate them by the Chapters in
their district.
We can identify opportunities for improving our reach
out to the candidates and general public.
Several responses so far show that some of the candi-
dates also ride but are not familiar with ABATE.
So be ready to take this information to your Chapters and
to reach out and contact your area candidates and let them
know that ABATE of Florida has sent out a survey and we
need them to respond so that we can share the information
with our members before they vote on November 2nd.
Legislative Trustees: Everyone in ABATE is counting on
you to contact the candidates. We need a big push this final
6 weeks if we want to get ABATE friendly members in the
Legislature.
One last thing - the deadline to register to vote in the gen-
eral elections is October 4th, voter registration is EASY to
do either on-line and in person.
