Introduction

TPS Field I/O is a new family of field

mountable I/O for the High- Performance
Process Manager (HPM), see Figure 1.
This cost-effective I/O can be installed in
both general purpose (non-hazardous)
and hazardous areas. For hazardous
area applications, the need for intrinsic
safety barriers is eliminated. TPS Field
I/O is DIN rail mounted and can be
installed in IEC Zone 1 / Zone 2 and FM
Division 2 hazardous areas.
It will help reduce the life cycle-costs in
installation, engineering, and
maintenance for the plant by reducing
the amount of control room space
needed, marshalling cabinets, cables
and cable trays, and configuration and
commissioning time.
TPS Field I/O offers a highly flexible I/O
(input/output) functions for both data
monitoring and control. TPS Field I/O is
currently supported by the HPM, with the
APM in a later development. Figure 1 – TPS Field I/O

Functional Description

Functional Overview
TPS Field I/O is fully supported in the TPS system with seamless integration through
the HPM. The Field IOM’s are integrated to the HPM via the I/O Link Extenders
(IOLE), as shown in Figure 2. The Field IOM’s ‘talk’ standard I/O Link, so to the HPM
these modules are treated like any of the existing traditional I/O Processors (IOP).

TPS Field I/O is connected in to TPS above at the HPMM. The HPMM is connected
via the I/O Link to a Bus Interface Module (IOLBIM) which in turn is connected via the
Railbus to various I/O modules.
The IOLBIM plus the IOMs together are "faceplated" in to the existing PM-family IOP
structure. These faceplates are called "Virtual" IOPs or VIOPs. The IOLBIM by itself,
and the IOMs, are unknown entities to the HPMM and the rest of the TPS system
above. Each VIOP will support one or more IOMs. The term Virtual is used to
distinguish from the PM-family's traditional IOPs. Each VIOP type corresponds to a
Traditional IOP type.

I/O is identical to that with Traditional IOPs. The differences are in the details of
specifications and operational information between the two I/O families.
This means that there is only a single database that is configured for the IOM’s using
the standard engineering tools, TPS Builder or the Date Entity Builder (DEB) and
Parameter Entry Display (PED) in the Native Window. All Field I/O data is mapped
into standard HPM point types and this allows for all IOM’s to work with all HPM points
and control algorithms. Status and alarms for the Field IOM’s are also integrated
through the standard TPS alarm and status displays.
Another strength of TPS Field I/O is the ability to mix this new I/O offering with the
traditional IOP’s in the same HPM. This allows for the optimal mix of traditional I/O
versus field mounted I/O.
TPS Field I/O offer solutions for Zone 1 as well as Zone 2 / Division 2 hazardous
areas and general purpose areas. Figure 3 shows the offerings available and where
they can be installed.

Components of a TPS Field I/O System

Bus Interface Module (BIM)
The ‘gateway’ in which the I/O Modules communicate with the HPM using I/O Link
protocol. The BIM is actually much more than a ‘gateway’ as it does EU conversion,
mapping the data into HPM point detail format, and alarming and status processing.
This is where the seamless integration to the HPM is provided as the data passed to
the HPM is compatible with the traditional IOP’s. It interfaces with the HPM via
primary and redundant I/O Link channels. Each BIM can support up to 16 I/O
Modules.

I/O Modules (IOM)

I/O Modules transfer signals to and from field instruments. Input modules receive
signals from transmitters and sensors and convert them into a digital form for
presentation to the BIM. Output modules receive commands from the BIM and
transfer them to actuators.

Fiber Coupler Adapter/Repeaters (FCA/R)

Fiber Coupler Adapter/Repeaters (FCA/Rs) are used within the Field I/O enclosure to
provide fiber-optic communications between remotely mounted enclosures and the
HPM. FCA/Rs support the transmit and receive connections for the Honeywell IOL
LANs and the HART/Auxiliary LAN.
The FCA/R has two functions. It may be used to either provide a conversion between
the incoming fiber field cable and the copper connection to the BIM within an
enclosure, or to repeat the fiber connection between enclosures.
Each FCA/R supports transmit and receive signals for one LAN, so a maximum of
three FCA/Rs is required within each enclosure – one for the primary link (IOLE Link
A), one for the redundant link (IOLE Link B), and one for the auxiliary/HART LAN.

Fiber Optic Cable Patch Panel

The I/O Link A and B cables are terminated with ST-type connectors. The connectors
are routed through an opening in the Field Enclosure to an internal Fiber Cable Patch
Panel. An ST-to-ST patch cable is then used to connect the IOLE cables to the
FCA/R.

TPS Field I/O Specification and Technical Data

Honeywell
FI03200
Aug-01 Page 9

A Transmit cable and a Receive cable are used for each Link. Optional cables for
HART integration may also be used via a third FCA/R.

Carriers
Carriers form the TPS Field I/O node’s physical and electrical backbone by providing
a mounting platform for the I/O modules and their associated field terminals. Internal
to the carrier is a communications bus (Railbus) which includes address and data
lines, and BIM and IOM power lines. The carriers also provide cable screen/shield
termination points for the field wiring. For 2/2 systems, the carriers allow for the
distribution of Bussed Field Power, which minimizes the amount of wiring and
terminations required for powered inputs and outputs.

Power Supply Units (PSUs)

Zone 1
IS power supplies accept locally available power and provide a regulated supply for
the BIMs, IOMs, and FCA/Rs. Each of the power supply’s six intrinsically safe outputs
may be used to power a single I/O module or BIM, or two FCA/Rs. Additional,
optionally-fitted power supplies may be used to provide power redundancy for all
system components.
Zone 2 / Division 2
The power supply units convert locally provided AC mains power to 12 V and 24 V dc
supplies to power the equipment in the enclosure.
A power unit provides 12 V dc power for system operation and 24 V dc to power field
devices and IS module power supplies . A pair of these provide redundancy for
system and communications but not for field power.
All of the standard enclosures have space to accommodate two of each type of power
unit.

Power supply monitor

The power supply monitor monitors the status of all of the power supplies in the
enclosure and provides an alert signal to the BIM should any of the supplies fail. One
power supply monitor is required per enclosure and is mounted beside the BIM on its
carrier.

Railbus isolator module

If the node incorporates IS field wiring (i.e. any 2/1 or “mixed” system) this isolator
module is required in the Railbus link to protect the IS section from the invasion of
fault voltages, in accordance with intrinsic safety requirements. This module is
mounted on its own module carrier between the BIM and any 2/1 I/O modules and
after any 2/2 I/O modules that might be fitted in the node.
If there is no IS field wiring at the node then this component is not required.

Field Terminals
Field terminals provide the interface between the I/O modules and the field wiring.
They include fusing and loop-disconnect as options. A mechanical keying system
prevents an I/O module from being connected to the wrong type of field terminal.
Field terminals mount onto the module carrier, one to each I/O module. They are
clamped firmly by the I/O module to form an electrical and mechanical assembly of
high integrity. They may be replaced in service without removing carriers or disturbing
the operation of other modules.

Hazardous Area Installation

TPS Field I/O may be installed not only in general purpose (non-hazardous)
environments, but also in hazardous areas where there is a risk of ignition from
flammable materials. The following section provides some principles and details of
the protection methods that are employed by TPS Field I/O to ensure its safe
operation in various hazardous locations, together with a summary of the international
classifications and terminology.

Explosion protection - Principles and Practices

In a plant where flammable materials are handled, a leak or spillage may give rise to
an explosive atmosphere. To protect both plant equipment and personnel,
precautions must be taken to ensure that this atmosphere cannot be ignited by an
electrical spark or hot surface. The areas at risk are known as hazardous areas and
the materials that are commonly involved include crude oil and its derivatives,
alcohols, natural and synthetic process gases, metal dusts, carbon dust, flour, starch,
grain, fibers, and flyings.

To enable electrical equipment to be used safely in such hazardous environments, a

number of different explosion protection techniques have been developed. National,
or in some cases, international, standards and codes of practice govern each
technique and define in detail how the equipment should be designed and applied.
National certifying (“approvals”) authorities ensure design compliance and national
inspectorates (in some cases, insurance companies) have the right to inspect each
installation. The different techniques lend themselves to different applications, and a
combination of techniques may be employed to provide the safest and most flexible
solution.

Hazardous area classification

Hazardous areas are classified according to:

• The ease of ignition of the flammable material by an electrical spark– Gas

Classification

• The ease of ignition of the flammable material by a hot surface – Temperature

Classification

• The probability that the flammable atmosphere will exist – Area Classification

Power Supply Monitor MF-PWRM2X

♦ 2/x TPS Field I/O PSU status monitoring

♦ signals supply failure(s) to Bus Interface Module

♦ monitors all 2/2 and 2/1 power supplies

♦ Zone 2 / Div 2 mounting

♦ mounts on 8716-CA-NS carrier

The Power Supply Monitor module type MF-PWRM2X monitors

the health of all power supplies in a TPS Field I/O 2/x node and
signals to the Bus Interface Module in the event of a failure. The
module receives power supply status information for all supply
rails including 12V system power, 24V field power for general
purpose (2/2) I/O modules and field power for intrinsically safe
(2/1) I/O modules.
Where power supply redundancy is supported, the module
enables failed power supplies to be identified and replaced
without interference to the process. The MF-PWRM2X module
itself may be removed and replaced in a Zone 2/ Div 2 hazardous
area without gas clearance.
