Introduction
Functional Description
Functional Overview
TPS Field I/O is fully supported in the TPS system with seamless integration through
the HPM. The Field IOM’s are integrated to the HPM via the I/O Link Extenders
(IOLE), as shown in Figure 2. The Field IOM’s ‘talk’ standard I/O Link, so to the HPM
these modules are treated like any of the existing traditional I/O Processors (IOP).

BIM
TPS Field I/O is connected in to TPS above at the HPMM. The HPMM is connected
via the I/O Link to a Bus Interface Module (IOLBIM) which in turn is connected via the
Railbus to various I/O modules.
The IOLBIM plus the IOMs together are "faceplated" in to the existing PM-family IOP
structure. These faceplates are called "Virtual" IOPs or VIOPs. The IOLBIM by itself,
and the IOMs, are unknown entities to the HPMM and the rest of the TPS system
above. Each VIOP will support one or more IOMs. The term Virtual is used to
distinguish from the PM-family's traditional IOPs. Each VIOP type corresponds to a
Traditional IOP type.
The configuration and operation at TPS nodes and the HPMM when using TPS Field
I/O is identical to that with Traditional IOPs. The differences are in the details of
specifications and operational information between the two I/O families.
This means that there is only a single database that is configured for the IOM’s using
the standard engineering tools, TPS Builder or the Date Entity Builder (DEB) and
Parameter Entry Display (PED) in the Native Window. All Field I/O data is mapped
into standard HPM point types and this allows for all IOM’s to work with all HPM points
and control algorithms. Status and alarms for the Field IOM’s are also integrated
through the standard TPS alarm and status displays.
Another strength of TPS Field I/O is the ability to mix this new I/O offering with the
traditional IOP’s in the same HPM. This allows for the optimal mix of traditional I/O
versus field mounted I/O.
TPS Field I/O offer solutions for Zone 1 as well as Zone 2 / Division 2 hazardous
areas and general purpose areas. Figure 3 shows the offerings available and where
they can be installed.

The description of the different offerings are in the x/y format; where x is the
hazardous area in which the IOM’s can be installed and y is where the location of the
field instruments are installed.
• 1/1 system means that the IOM’s can be installed in a Zone 1 hazardous area and
interface with devices installed in a Zone 0 hazardous area
• 2/1 system means that the IOM’s can be installed in a Zone 2 / Division 2
A Transmit cable and a Receive cable are used for each Link. Optional cables for
HART integration may also be used via a third FCA/R.
Carriers
Carriers form the TPS Field I/O node’s physical and electrical backbone by providing
a mounting platform for the I/O modules and their associated field terminals. Internal
to the carrier is a communications bus (Railbus) which includes address and data
lines, and BIM and IOM power lines. The carriers also provide cable screen/shield
termination points for the field wiring. For 2/2 systems, the carriers allow for the
distribution of Bussed Field Power, which minimizes the amount of wiring and
terminations required for powered inputs and outputs.
Field Terminals
Field terminals provide the interface between the I/O modules and the field wiring.
They include fusing and loop-disconnect as options. A mechanical keying system
prevents an I/O module from being connected to the wrong type of field terminal.
Field terminals mount onto the module carrier, one to each I/O module. They are
clamped firmly by the I/O module to form an electrical and mechanical assembly of
high integrity. They may be replaced in service without removing carriers or disturbing
the operation of other modules.
Field Enclosure
Zone 1
The TPS Field I/O 1/1 system is equipped with a choice of environmentally hardened
stainless steel field enclosures that may be installed in Zone 1 (gas or flammable
dust) hazardous areas without further certification.
An enclosure is called a primary enclosure if it contains a BIM and an extension
enclosure if it does not have a BIM, i.e. it contains only I/O modules (plus required
power supplies).
The primary enclosure contains the following:
• up to 8 I/O modules
• a Bus Interface Module
• up to four power supply units
• up to three Fiber to Copper Adapter/Repeaters
• a BIM carrier and 8-module carrier, or an 8-module carrier
• a hinged door with a four-bolt closure mechanism to ensure an effective
environmental seal
• cable management hardware and accessories
• fiber patch panel
• internal ac mains wiring including socket outlets for pluggable
power supplies and terminations for incoming supply lines
Zone 2/Division 2
The TPS Field I/O 2/x system is equipped with a choice of 3 field enclosures that may
be installed in Zone 2 and Class 1, Division 2 hazardous areas without further
certification. It is a mild-steel enclosure designed to mount on a vertical surface. They
provide environmental protection for complete 12 or 16 module nodes, including I/O
modules, power supplies, Bus Interface Module and Fiber to copper
adapter/repeaters. The enclosures are fitted with suitable carriers, cable
management hardware and accessories, allowing population with I/O modules of any
type. A flexible gland plate arrangement allows for a wide range of cable termination
options.
The enclosure type is defined by the type of node required: 2/2, 2/1 or a mix of these
two types. This provides the mounting platform for other system components which
will be chosen according to the application.
The 2/2 enclosure contains a separate internal back panel to carry the key
The 2/1 enclosure contains a separate internal back panel to carry the key
components required to construct a 2/1 node. It accommodates 12 x 2/1 I/O modules
– on an 8-module carrier and a 4-module carrier – and has built-in redundant power
supplies for the BIM and the LAN communication components.
The 2/1 enclosure contains the following:
• up to 12 I/O modules
• a Bus Interface Module
• redundant power supply units for the BIM, FCA/R, and IOM
• power supply for field circuits (optionally redundant)
• up to three Fiber to Copper Adapter/Repeaters
• a BIM carrier , one 8-module carrier, one 4-module carrier, and one Railbus
isolator carrier
• a hinged door with a mechanism to ensure an effective environmental seal
• cable management hardware and accessories
• fiber patch panel
The mixed 2/2 and 2/1 enclosure contains a separate internal back panel to carry the
key components required to construct a mixed field wiring node. It accommodates 12
I/O modules: 8 x 2/2 plus 4 x 2/1 modules and has built-in redundant power supplies
for the BIM and the LAN communication components.
The mixed 2/2 and 2/1 enclosure contains the following:
• up to 12 I/O modules
• a Bus Interface Module
• redundant power supply units for the BIM, FCA/R, and IOM
• power supply for field circuits (optionally redundant)
• up to three Fiber to Copper Adapter/Repeaters
• a BIM, one 8-module carrier for the 2/2 IOM, one 4-module carrier for the 2/1 IOM,
and one Railbus isolator carrier
• a hinged door with a mechanism to ensure an effective environmental seal
• cable management hardware and accessories
• fiber patch panel

plant safety that the state of each of the
outputs is known. While the BIM is initialis-
ing, the I/O modules are held in the power-

initialisation and before establishing com-
munication with the host, the outputs are set
to predefined “initialisation” states. This
