A few words from us…

Farewell to 2007
Welcome 2008

2008 has come. It is amazing, isn't it? Prime One School Management wishes
you good health, love, success and the best of luck.

2007 was a great year for POS. We moved into a brand new building with state-
of- art facilities and loads of new students and teachers to join our big family.

With the changing year, POS has made a lot of improvements: splitting the
classrooms, English Enrichment Programme, Watching programme and
comparative study abroad. We will continue to consolidate and improve our
existing programmes such as CCA, field trips, creative teaching, competitions
and many more.

We want 2008 to be the best year yet, as our facilities are getting more and more
complete, and our family grows bigger and better.

This school year, we have planned some great events: an open house with a full
length musical drama and our internal competition for Chinese New Year: S2 M2
(Science, Sempoa, Math and Mandarin)competition.

We would sincerely like to thank all of POS parents who have supported us so far.

Best regards,
Ms. Fauziah,
Editor-in-Chief
PrimeOne School goes
to Thailand
The year 2008 was an
important year for
PrimeOne. The founder
of PrimeOne School, Mr.
Amrin Susilo Halim was
able to award the 2 best
teachers, Ms. Lena and
Ms. Susan, and the 3 best
students: Tiffany Dhara
Anggiono, Ivy Icasia and
Veronica Lestari with a
study tour to Thailand
from the 7th to the 13th of
January, 2008.
The criteria for choosing the best teacher were professionalism and an ability to be a
good example to students and colleagues. The best students were chosen due to
their academic ability as well as their exemplary behaviour. Accompanying the
group were: Ms. Fauziah, Principal of Elementary, Ms. Ninie, Principal of Junior
High as well as Ms. Natasha, the non-academic director of POS as well as some
other founding members.

In Bangkok, the group visited St. John's International School. The POS students
were able to speak to Mr. John Boakes, the principal of the school as well as visit
classrooms. Ms. Fauziah expressed her interest in continuing cooperation with the
school, a suggestion which was greeted with enthusiasm. And in a short time he
promised he would visit POS.

They were given a chance to watch some Thai dances and other cultural
performances while in Thailand.

“I will never forget this journey. Everything is so fascinating; Pattaya, Saint

John's school, spending time with the teachers and principals of POS…”
exclaimed Veronica,
“Thank you for the chance to experience this!”

Global Warming

Catch phrase of the 21st century: Global Warming.

Last year's climate conference in Bali put the spotlight on Indonesia.
Indonesia holds the world record for deforestation.
Indonesia has suffered numerous landslides, floods and droughts in recent years
due to environmental change. So what must be done?
What can we do?
Can we do something for the environment?
I am only 1 person, it won't make a difference what I do, will it?
It can.
Imagine if all Indonesians switched off ONE LIGHTBULB.
That's about 200 million people times 10 Watt = 2 BILLION WATTS
EVERY DAY!
I don't know what that converts to in petrol saved to produce energy, but it will
make a difference, one person at a time.
Imagine we do something every day.

Here are some more things you can do to save the environment:
1. Switch off lights and electrical appliances that are not being used.
2. Walk, go by bicycle, pedicab (becak dayung) or take public transport.
3. Reuse plastic bags or use a cloth bag.
4. Refuse plastic bags where possible.
5. Don't use plastic cups and bottles where possible. Use glasses and
water bottles.
6. Use reusable food packaging.
7. Recycle where possible. Give/ sell to the recycling men (tukang butut)
or you can donate it to charity organization.
8. Tell your friends about it!

For a low-down on the truth on global warming, watch “An Inconvenient

Truth”, a shocking documentary by Al Gore.

INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE…
STUDENT (OOPS)

POS students talk about global warming

Janis: “I worry this global warming. What about us in

the future? So, at home, I try to save using the
electricity. Everytime I finish doing anything I turn
off all the light. I've watched a CD “An
Inconvenient Truth” about the environment.

Vincent: “We have to save things in the world: water,

electricity and stop cutting trees, stop using too much
plastic; We have to start from now on!”

Veddrick: “Hmmm. ya, global warming… I know

about it! I think we have to be more careful.”

Jeffry: Global Warming? We have to save the

Eid Celebration for Preschool Student
Pre-school students, too, took part in this celebration of tolerance.
They listened attentively as our Lebaran hosts, Ms Any and Ms
Amy, explained that tolerance is something very important in our
diversity. Students then shook each other's hands in friendship and
forgiveness.

Eid Celebration for Preschool Student

The celebration then was filled with a joyful atmosphere as the

students played 'Fatima went to town'. They were asked to dress up in
a sarong and carry an umbrella. The game itself was quite tough as it
required good team work.
Two thumbs up for Kindergarten 2 students!
Meanwhile, K1 students also enjoyed the game 'What's the time, Mr.
Wolf?' How about PG students? They jumped and danced happily
during the chair game.
What a blissful and fun celebration Pre-school students had!

A Celebration of Tolerance

“I'm so happy, touched, by the atmosphere of

tolerance at this school.” said Ms. Any, an
elementary religion teacher, as part of her
speech.

PrimeOne School celebrated the end of fasting

and the Eid holidays this year.

10
This day is one of our fondest memories as
school teachers. The students went all out to
celebrate this day, not caring what religion or
race they were. Christians, Buddhists and
Muslims alike sang and danced together. They
asked each other for forgiveness and shared
food with one another.

If all the people in the world could show this

extent of tolerance,
The world would finally be at peace.

Each school level had a different celebration.
Pre-school spent the whole morning celebrating.
In the morning they attacked the principals and reception
with a raucous “Trick or Treat!”. One class, was lead by a
.
mysterious masked lady- another by a spooky ghoul and yet
another by a witch!

After the trick or treating, there was a Halloween assembly

in the Multi-purpose hall. The principal had invited some
guests to speak to the children.

The topic was: 'All around the World', so the guests were
international: from China, England and from our very own
beloved country, Indonesia. There was a costume and
performance competition for students and teachers.

Elementary students came to school in uniform. At
homeroom, the tidy, cute students of Elementary were
suddenly no where to be seen. They had been replaced
by pale wraiths covered in black veins and fake blood,
vampires, and other vile creatures. They descended on
the teacher's room and ransacked the principal's
office. “Candy! Candy! Trick or Treat!” they cried.

Junior High met for a spooky monthly performance

complete with Jack O Lanterns, and spooky
costumes. There was a drama written and performed
by Junior High 2, “King of Death”, as well as dance
and song performances.

Pre-school, Elementary and Junior High pupils, teachers and parents celebrated
Christmas in true PrimeOne style. That is, spiritful and tolerant. Again, Buddhist,
Muslims and Christians alike celebrated Christmas together, regardless of their
race or religion in a true festival of tolerance.

Playgroup and Kindergarten definitely captured the spirit of Christmas this

year: Parents, students and teachers alike were kept entertained by our
precocious, cute pre-schoolers dancing and singing.

14
Ms. Susan and Ms. Rosemary, the MCs for the occasion, were
very spiritful, funny and skillful in getting everyone to join in
with the festivities. Everybody ended up performing: there were
cute dances, singing and a short drama. Every class put on a

performance, and every class dressed up specially. There were
rabbits, fairies and lots of little Santas, of course! The teachers
sung in a choir and finally the parents were asked onto the
stage to sing “Feliz Navidad”. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

At the end of the show, Santa put in a surprise visit to POS.

Christmas in Elementary and Junior High School

“Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas!” shouts a jolly Santa Claus standing at the
entrance of Prime One.

On the last day before the Christmas holidays parents of our pupils came to
watch the performances prepared by teachers and pupils. There was pom-pom
dancing, a ballet, a pianica and angklung orchestra, choirs singing traditional
carols while others sang more modern Christmas songs like 'Jingle Bell Rock'
The crowning performance was a very special Christmas Nativity Play complete
with caroling performed by over one hundred students dressed as sheep, cows,
shepherds and three kings!

For the finale, our small MCs from Elementary invited teachers, pupils and
parents to join them on the stage to sing: 'We wish you a Merry Christmas'. The
founder of PrimeOne School, Mr. Amrin Susilo Halim joined in with the fun.

Krishnamurti: Seeing is Believing
The English saying 'Seeing is believing' is appropriate to illustrate the seminar
presented by Krishnamurti at Prime One School on Saturday, the 6th of October
2007. The name of Krishnamurti is known throughout the country as an
outstanding figure who is believed to be a great motivator. His books on education,
psychology, metaphysics and others have become bestsellers. Bearing a
Hindustani name and having a reputation as one of the best motivators, the man
was not like an Indian, nor did he appear in a suit of clothes of a prominent public
figure. On the contrary, he was so simple in outfit and in his manner of speaking.
Informally dressed, Krishnamurti appeared like a simple, elderly man of Chinese
descendant speaking in good Indonesian mixed with English.

In spite of his 'ordinary' appearance and average physique, the man succeeded in
playing a couple of tricks that made all the audience fooled around. By means of his
playful tricks, Krisnamurti proved that the best learning is achieved through
playing. He also showed evidence that visual messages are more impressive than
oral ones and the presentation of the lesson is more successful when applied in
social forms.

Furthermore, he emphasized that EQ (Emotional Quotient) has a greater role than

IQ (Intelligence Quotient). Therefore, teachers are also expected to develop the
emotional level during the teaching-learning process.

Time passed so fast that the seminar that was scheduled to last for two and a half
hours extended to three and a half hours, but nobody seemed to feel bored.
Everybody was enchanted by the charm of Krishnamurti. When finally the
seminar ended, the audience did not even move as they felt there were still a lot of
things they wanted to learn from the presenter. Before he left, Krishnamurti was
detained to have snapshots with the big family at Prime One School. Krishnamurti
is really a great teacher as well as a great motivator! We all would like to have more
sessions with him to develop our insight so that we can contribute in the effort to
enlighten the life of the nation.

Good bye Mr. Krishnamurti, hope to see you soon!

S M - What's that?

S2M2 stands for Science Sempoa Math and Mandarin, PrimeOne School's
internal competition, held on 27th of January, 2008.
Some 140 students took part in the competitions. There was something for
everyone: Science, Sempoa and Math for the academically minded, and Mandarin
Poetry and Karaoke for those who like to mix fun with learning.

Thanks to our sponsors Bank Mandiri, IBBI, New York Art and Phillips and of
course our very own students, PrimeOne was able to provide our students with a
great day and satisfying prizes. With a participation fee of Rp. 25,000 – 35,000,
students received souvenir, lunch and registration. Not bad, huh?
Winners of Junior High Science
Competition

20
Early on Sunday morning, students waited to go to the competition rooms.

“Nervous?”
Ivy, a Junior High student, answered: “Nah, I'm not nervous- what should I be
nervous about.”

Kevin, a Junior High student was a bit more strung out.

“Give me the paper with the formulas- I haven't studied!” he said, trying to take the
paper from Francisca, another JH student. But obviously he had been studying
st
sometime- he won 1 place.

At 11:00, the fun began, starting with Mandarin Poetry. Our students showed how
confident they are speaking foreign languages. It was entertaining, even for those
who couldn't understand a word spoken.

The Karaoke competition was very entertaining, and showed some great talent.
Felicia, an Elementary 1 student, the winner of the competition was cute and
confident without missing a word. Watch out, Medan!

Finally, it was time for the announcements.

All in all, it was a fun day, with a relaxed atmosphere.

The Venus fly - trap

Don’t panic! you won’t find one of these
lurking at the bottom of your garden.
They only grow in the swamps of certain
areas. Here’s how they catch their pray ....

1. A fly touches
one of the
trigger hairs on
the leaf ...
nothing
happens.

2. The fly touches another hair.

Yikes! This causes an electrical
signals inside the leaf and the leaf
folds. Half a second later ... the
spikes on the leaf edge trap the the
insect. Yes, it’s a plant with what
looks like a pair of jaws. The fly is
trapped.

3. Within half an hour the fly is squeezed

tight by the leaves. Then it’s digested while
it’s still alive! The vicious vegetable takes
two weeks to complete its murderous meal.

1. The Souce- O -Magic

Why not , I thought after my science lesson? I’ll try anything once, and
so I presented a device to help kids and mums with that old problem -
unscrewing the top off the sauce bottle! Here’s the result. Natty, eh?

You can see the bottle is firmly clamped on the lower wheel and the top is
help tight by the grips under the upper wheel. All you need to do is turn
the handle as indicated and in seconds the bottle will opened. Quick,
convenient and ...... well, expensive - but I’ve got to have some reward for
my efforts, but the question is does it work?

29
2. The Laboratory Shelf
If you’ve been wondering what the secret of my good looks is, it’s my
elixir of everlasing life which I drink daily. It’s made up from very
special ingredients, but to stop anything just wandering in and mixing
up a brew, the bottle aren’t labelled.

The Frog Spawn isn’t in the middle and has a lower number than
M
the Ant Blood.
M The Worm Juice is on the lower shelf but not next to the Otter
Sweat, which is directly under the Ant Blood.
The Wolf dribble is numbered two less thant the Otter Sweat.
M
Can you work out where the Fox Scent is?

3. Charity Day
Wah! I looked out of my skylight this morning and what did I see? The
streets were crawling with gorillas, clowns, giant teddy bears, aliens, fairy
princesses, cowboys, clowns and more clowns. For a moment I thought
I’d woken into a hideous nightmare, but no - it was worse! It was
CHARITY DAY. They were all out waving their little tins and buckets
expecting me to pay them just for looking ridiculous. Bah! Nobody ever
paid me for looking ridiculous.

30
Normally I wouldn’t venture out until they’d gone, but sadly last week I
dropped half a gorgonzola and kipper sandwich on the other side of town
and the tantalizing aroma is driving me mad.
Here’s a map of where they all stand and how much they charge you to
get past them. Can you show me how to get to my drool-inducing
sandwich without having to spend more than 10 pound?

Can a Visit to the Dentist be Fun?
POS Fieldtrip to the Dentist's

Junior High 2 students were fascinated by their tour of the state-of-the-art dentist
surgery, “Perfect Smile Clinic”, on Tuesday the 18th of September, 2007. The
resident dentist, Dr. G Rudy Djapardy, and his dentist assistants showed us around.

Both teachers and students were repulsed and interested in the modern equipment.
In the sterilisation room, students could see how the dentistry instruments are
sterilised. In the X- ray room, we were shown some X-rays of different teeth
problems.
Adrian Ottoman was fascinated and asked: “What is the rarest tooth problem? Do
you have pictures of it?”
The assistants obliged our student's curiosity by letting the students try everything-
except drilling of course!

32
Students were given the opportunity to sit on the dentist's chair and see how all the
instruments worked.
DrG Rudy Djapardy reminded us to brush our teeth every morning after breakfast
and before going to sleep, and to gargle whenever it is not possible to brush properly.

Everyone learnt new words such as 'calculus' (karang gigi), handskun (the medical
term for gloves) and intra-oral camera (a camera used to view the insides of people's
mouths).

The students agreed that it had been their best fieldtrip ever.
Who would have guessed?

33
Learning about Animals at the Hatchery

The lessons of Pre-school are conducted thematically. That means

that every month Pre-school students are able to explore various
themes and learning. In November, the theme was about animals.
Students learnt about names of animals, their habitats and natures.
In order to support the learning, Pre-school students were taken to
the animals' hatchery at USU (University of North Sumatera).

Observing animals in the wild was a new experience for our pre-
school students. From the moment we arrived at the hatchery, the
students were very excited. They saw ostriches, eagles, spotted -
deer, goats, iguana, peacocks and dwarf chickens. Some students
had never seen a deer before. They stared at the animals.

34
The students kept on asking curious questions. One student
asked, “Ms, where is the deer's mummy?” while others were very
keen on commenting everything they saw.

Though the sun was shining and the journey on foot was quite tiring
for the students, none of them complained at all. Instead, the
smiles never faded from their faces and their eyes were twinkling
brightly. The pre-school students of Prime One School had a
wonderful field trip at USU Animals' Hatchery. Not only had they
learnt about animals on that day, but also about taking care of the
environment. Though the hatchery is surrounded by beautiful
flowers and plants, none of the students tried to pick them. They
learnt that picking flowers may destroy its beauty as well as the
environment. Erick, one of our students from K2 Octopus said, “I
like to be here very much!”

Maths Fieldtrip: Shopping at Hypermart?

Ms. Rika, the Maths teacher, is teaching Elementary Two about counting using
money. She asks the students to bring 5000 each. Huh? What's going on?
Ms. Rika takes the POS students shopping to Hypermart at Palladium in Medan.

Ms. Rika takes the pupils in the morning, so the students have the supermarket
to themselves. The pupils are very enthusiastic. POS teachers accompany them
patiently.

Finally, they approach the cashier. With beating hearts, they pass their money
across the counter… Will it be enough?

“Rp. 8,600! Sorry love, that's not enough.” says the cashier. William blushes.

“Sorry William, that means you need to count properly next time, OK?”

A serious decision

Ms. Fauziah, principal of

Elementary accompanies
Chandra in his moment of
truth.

36
After they have finished, the pupils are
divided into two groups: those that counted
correctly and those that didn't.

“Hooray! WE WON!” they shout happily.

Wow, today our kids experienced something

completely different. Shopping and paying
by themselves. Normally mummy and daddy
do it.
Ms. Nike discusses biscuits
“So we really must be careful when we go with Andre.
shopping, so that we don't run out of money”
says Nabila in fluent English.

Thanks to Hypermart's friendly staff and

great service, the children go home happily
after their trip out in the 'adult' world.

See you on our next field trip! Bye bye!

Thank you, Hypermart!

POS FIELDTRIP TO
ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY

Have you ever felt happy because your curiosity is satisfied by a visit or fieldtrip?
On Tuesday, 25th of October 2007 Junior High School'students of PRIME ONE
SCHOOL together with teachers and principal made a fieldtrip to VOLTAMA
MEGAH VISTA ELETRICAL INDUSTRY Co. Ltd, which is located on Jalan
Medan – Binjai km. 10.5 Gang Mesjid, Paya Geli Medan. This factory produces
electrical devices and tools such as fittings, plugs and switches, everyday products
we use every day. Both teachers and students finally understood where these
products came from and what processes they had to go through before they became
the electrical devices or tools we use everyday.

“Incredible! I am going to tell my father about this,” said Wilson, a Junior High 1
student.

38
Miss Pogy, a representative of the company, held a clear briefing with us about the
company's products as soon as we had gathered inside the packing room. She led us
around to see how each machine worked while explaining the processes of
producing the devices from the biggest smallest size. She added that to produce one
device or tool it must go through some processes- namely: pressing, removing and
selecting (to remove the remains of the plastic or metal material after having been
pressed and then select best quality pressing outcome), assembling and packing.

The heat of the factory's production area didn't weaken the spirit of our JH students
to fulfill their curiosity. They even asked the workers questions. Mr. Alfian and Mr.
Doddy also took the opportunity to inquire about the quality of the product
compared with others'.

Everyone felt excited and satisfied to have visited Voltama. Miss Pogy also
reminded us to be watchful when handling electrical devices and tools. “ It's a very
unforgettable experience, ” said all of them peacefully.

Thank you VOLTAMA!

Dinosaurs, Tigers, Skulls and North Sumatra
Fieldtrip to the National Museum, Medan

On the 3rd and 4th of October, Prime One's Elementary students

visited Medan's National Museum.

Upon arrival, the students walked around the exhibits. Some of

the boys were fascinated by the elephant's and tiger's footprints
and the dinosaur statues.

A few students lagged behind, asking curiously about everything:

“What's this? What's this, Miss?”

One Elementary 3 student, Joyce, said: “Miss, it's really

interesting here. I want to know everything!”

Grace, Elementary 3, was interested in the model of a

blacksmith's workshop.

All the students found something of interest, because the

museum offers an extensive and informative collection about
Sumatra's history, wildlife, and culture.

After looking round the museum with the teachers explaining

things, our tour guide showed us some Batak folktales about the
creation of Parapat.

An interesting and educational trip, I want to go back some day

soon.

Performance at
Garuda Plaza
Hotel

Pre-school Students Make

a Hit Performance
th
On Saturday, 17 November 2007, the Pre-school students of PrimeOne
School dressed up adorably. There were 6 girls dressed up like fairies and 6
handsome boys in formal suits. The pre-school students were very flattered
to be given an opportunity to perform at a seminar held at Garuda Plaza
hotel on that day. The seminar itself talked about how to optimize nurturing
in order to create children with a good attitude. All children looked nervous
as they danced swiftly along to the song “You Raise Me Up”.

The pupils were then gathered in a playground while waiting for their
parents to finish attending the seminar. And again, PrimeOne School
students impressed the audience by answering most of the questions and
quizzes thrown at them by the hosts.

Buddhist Scripture- Reading Competition

Prime One School Elementary 6 students, Tiffany, Kenny Keegan, Yunnis

Jonathan and Tania Winston took part in the Buddhist scripture- reading
rd
competition held on the 23 of September at the Darma Wijaya Temple in Medan.
The winning criteria for this competition were pronunciation, creative text use and
teamwork. All of the contestants took part enthusiastically.
According to Ms. Lily, the teacher who trained and accompanied the students, the
trainers at the temple were still young, and provided a great example to our students
to be more active in religious activities.
Even though it was the first time our students in this kind of competition, they still
managed to be in the top 10 teams to take part.
Well done, boys and girls! I know we will be even better next time.

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING
A SCHOOL PREFECT?

They have to be at school bright and early.

They smile and welcome us at the gate.
They help little children out of cars.

Wilson (JH): Being a school prefect is exciting for me. I have

a brother and sister to take care at home, so here it is the same
thing. I think of my fellow students as my brothers and sisters.
Helping them is fun for me.

Vincent (Elementary 5): As a school prefect, this is my duty. I

have to come to school earlier, putting on my sash and
greeting people. For me, it's what I must do. Yet it is not a
burden. It's something to help the school.

Steven (Elementary 5): Yeah…. It is just, hm… I don't know. I

follow Vincent. But it's O.K. for me- eventhough sometimes it
is hard.

Elisa (JH1): I like it. It's like I am trusted to do something. It's

fun!

Cinthia (Elementary 4): It is amazing and it

is fun.

Monthly Guest: Japanese
Consul

This month, Elementary and Junior High School students had a meeting of the
cultural kind. Our curious students couldn't stop asking questions.

Our guests, Mr. Edo and colleagues from the Japanese Consulate showed the
students how Japanese children usually play, and what kinds of toys they play
with. There was a boat painted yellow and red, decorated with pictures of fish on
it. This boat could float in the water, and even produced a whistling sound! There
was a doll's tea set and many traditional toys.

Then Mr Edo taught the students to sit and stand- Japanese style! Our students
joined in enthusiastically.

45
The funniest part was when students and teachers were dressed up in kimonos.
'Watasiwa!' exclaimed Mr. Rony, an Elementary teacher.

Finally, Mr Edo and his colleagues taught us how to make origami flowers.
“Wow!” exclaimed Juzenny, an Elementary 4 student. “It's not as easy as I
thought.”

Junior High students learnt how to do calligraphy.

According to Mme Dewi, S. Pd, POS centre director, the aim of this month's
event was to introduce different cultures to our students to expand their knowledge
of the world.

46
Monthly Guest: International Yo-Yo 'Artists' from Team Planet
Menpora.

Not a month goes by without an exciting moment at Prime One School.

This month's guests were truly international.
Introducing: Blas Ramirez from Argentina, Andres Osorio from Columbia and
Kyle Izwany from Malaysia, international Yo-yo champions!
Our guests have been travelling around Indonesia for the last 9 months, visiting
Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Palembang and finally Medan.
Students were shown the basic yo-yo tricks necessary to take part in the
championship, and then shown some more complex tricks: a star, an Eiffel tower,
even a becak and 'sambal'.
They also conveyed an important message for our young students from the Ministry
of Youth and Sport (Menteri Pemuda dan Olahraga):
“Yoyo- YES! Drugs- NO!”

'Walking the dog' a yoyo

basic trick

47
It is very important, for students to get this message drummed in early, and also to
have hobbies, as hobbies are a good prevention method.

The students who screamed loudest were awarded with merchandise from
'PLANET'.

One Elementary student, Nathan (Thames Class) kept on saying excitedly: “My
favourite trick was the Coca-Cola!”.

Junior High Students couldn't stop asking questions.

Adrian and Kevin, both Junior High Two students, couldn't stop asking:
“Can you show us another trick?”
“How long have you been practicing yo-yo?”
“Where can we buy yo-yos?”
“How long can you spin for?”
Our monthly guests, who have years of yo-yo playing experience among them-
Blas has been playing yo-yo for 25, Adres for 14 and Kyle for 8 years respectively-
were happy to answer all our questions and seemed quite sad to leave our curious,
fun-loving kids.

Table Manners
A real PrimeOne student is not only academically brilliant and self-confident but
also polite and well-behaved.

That's why we invited Dra Emmy Erwina, MA , a well-known lecturer for

professional etiquette, to give our students a seminar in table etiquette.

You might think it's quite simple, but even our teachers learnt something new and
interesting from the seminar.

First of all, the students gathered in MPH.

“Does your mother still feed you?” she asked.
“NO!” shouted all the children.
“In that case you need to use proper table manners.” said Mrs Emmy.

Here a quick reminder of the points.

Sit straight
Place a napkin on your lap.
Spoons are on the right, forks are on the left.
Say: “Let's have lunch”
Do not forget to thank God for the food.
Always say please and thank you
SMILE!
Put your spoon and fork together neatly on the tray when you have finished.
Finally, tidy up yourself; don't wait for mummy or nanny to do it.

As you can see, our students joined in enthusiastically.

49
Monthly Guest JH: STAY FREE FROM
DRUGS
Our guests this month, Aiptu. Irianto Wijaya and Brig. S.
Hasibuan, who work for the Narcotics Division (Sat Res
Narkoba Poltabes MS), kept our students and teachers on
the edge of their seats for a whole hour.

They were here to share their horrifying accounts of drug

abuse with our young adults in JH1 and JH2. Their aim
was to inform and warn about the consequences of drug
abuse.

Mr. Irianto, a neat man in his late thirties, was first to

speak. The audience hushed as they listened intently. He
explained what can happen if you deal drugs. The
consequences can be jail or even a death sentence. He
mentioned four foreigners who were caught and executed
due to smuggling drugs to Medan. Mr. Irianto is a gifted
public speaker and caught the students' imaginations with
his graphic account of a firing squad.

50
The second speaker, Mr. Hasibuan seemed to be a
quiet man, not what you would expect from a
policeman. But his description of the horrors of drug
abuse sent shivers down my spine, and left students
and teachers feeling slightly sick and determined not
to get involved in drug misuse. He mentioned some
facts that most of us had never heard before.

Did you know for example, that ecstasy traces remain

in the blood for up to 7 years?

Did you know that addicts sometimes suck their own

blood if they can't get another fix? They are even
worse than Dracula!

To end the talk, Mr. Hasibuan sang a song he had

written after 17 years of service in the narcotics
division. His melodic voice and strong lyrics were
greeted with clapping.

At the end of the talk, students and teachers remained

in hushed silence, shocked by what they had just
heard, determined not to be tempted by the evils of
drugs.

Science Projects Abuses to Life Processes

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Leader of Freedom

African Americans have experienced discrimination from the

early 17th century during the initial period of slave trade (pictured
below). In the 1960s they were liberated from slavery but still
tortured with unfair treatment from whites.

In accordance with The Jim Crows Law implemented in the

1880s, coloured people were banned from eating and drinking at
restaurants/ cafes with the sign 'whites only'. Also, they were
not allowed to sit in the front rows of buses and even had to give up
their seats to white passengers in crowded buses.

It was not until 75 years later that a man came to change American
history. One man, who appeared with his courage and unrelenting
struggle to abolish racism and segregation against blacks. Despite death
threats from his political enemies, being imprisoned 120 times and facing
countless perils during his movement, he never gave up. He was
Martin Luther King Jr, born on January 15th,1929 from a middle
class family whose father was a Baptist minister.

He was to become one of the most prominent civil right activists and
Nobel Peace Prize winner. As a prominent advocate of non-violent
protest inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, King led a bus boycott
campaign, where no blacks took any ride on a bus for one year as protest
against the unfair treatment of black passengers. He also held a 'sit-in'
involving 75.000 college students all over US.

53
In this movement, a large number of blacks would enter 'whites only'
cafes and wouldn't leave till they were served. King's peaceful
demonstration movement made him a national figure after receiving
violent attacks from the opposition and harsh response from police forces.
On August 28, 1963, King led a peaceful march from the
Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington
DC, where he delivered his most famous speech, 'I have a dream' as
pictured below.

“I have a dream
That my four little children
Will one day live in a nation
Where they will not be judged by the color of their skin
But by the content of their character
I have a dream today….”

His struggle brought historical results when the then president of the
US, Lyndon B. Johnson, abolished the Jim Crows Law, thus
enabling all African Americans to enjoy public facilities without
discriminations ever since.

On the 4th of April 1968, King was assassinated by a sniper while

standing on the terrace of the Lorraine Motel, where he had been
staying during his anti- poverty campaign in Memphis, Tennessee.

There's one interesting result found after his autopsy. The medical
result wrote that he had the heart of a sixty-year-old as a result of
stress for tens of years although his real age was only 39 when he died.

54
My impressions of Martin Luther King, Jr has brought a huge
enthusiasm in bringing this issue to my teaching. I replayed the “I have
a dream” speech over and over again at the request of my Junior High
students, awakening our sense of humanity.
st
Now in the era of 21 century, we are free for there is no more
colonialization or wars, except in some parts of the world where some
citizens are still suffering from civil war and terrorism. Here, we are
fortunate for we own democratic human rights to do what we want to do,
to express ideas of our minds and to develop our liberty to get more
extraordinary achievements.
But don't forget that what has made people be able to stand like today is
because of some amazingly brave people. People like Martin Luther
King Jr.

Written by: Ms. Ivanawaty, SH

What do you think about Martin Luther King?
Junior High Students give their say after learning about King:
Jessica Hariwijaya (JH 1 AE):
Martin Luther King Jr. is a great hero for the
blacks. He was really brave to oppose the rules in
which blacks couldn’t sit in the café that written in
“WHITES ONLY.” If a black man sat in the bus
and a white man came up, the black would have to give
his seat. But now, the blacks are already free from civil
right discrimination because of Martin Luther king,
Jr. He is amazing!

Wilson (JH 1 AE):

He is a great hero. He stood up for the blacks and
defended them from the unfair law.

Fiona (JH 1 AE):

What he did was extraordinary because he fought for
the black people's rights. He wanted a country where
blacks and whites can live together in harmony.

Ria (JH 1 AE):

Because of King, the American blacks can live a
much better life than it was in the past.

IF ONLY
IF only he could come back here to advise
me for one last time
IF only I hadn't denied all his words
IF only I could turn back time

But…..

If only he had been waiting for me at home

If only he could understand his son
If only he had come for me to take care of
me
If only he had hugged me when I was cold
If only he had left his work to attend my
birthday
If only he hadn't gone from my history

But all has gone…

He is now sleeping forever
And what can I do now is see him lying in
his bed
And I might see him later…

By Viviana, Junior High Two, MG

56
If Only

If only I hadn't hated anyone

If only I couldn't hate you
If only you hadn't hated me
If only we had been best friends
If only you had considered me your friend

If only we hadn't fought

If only we could solve that problem
If only that problem had never come
If only I could have apologized
If only you could forgive me…

We could be best friends.

Hatred will be done if one person starts to

say sorry.

BACK TO NATURE
PrimeOne School's Planting Enrichment Program : A Lifeskill

For some people, working as a farmer is the last choice or it might never come to
their mind to work with dirty, muddy soil under the hot sun to prepare for their
raising of crops. Then why does PrimeOne School provide the Planting
Enrichment Program for the Junior High Students?

Well, this is due to the school vision and missions:

- To nurture and develop disciplined, well-behaved, creative, innovative,
imaginative, independent and global human resources.
- To enhance the competence by interacting with the environment.

JH students who have passed their LSC's may select Planting Enrichment
Program, in which they learn the practical skill of planting various kinds of crops
like corn, peanut, chili, tomato, cassava, etc.
At first, some of the students felt reluctant, but later most of them become very
enthusiastic especially after they saw that their plants had grown well. When the
harvest time comes, they feel very excited in picking the corn. A few of them
even followed Mr. Huang's example of tasting the fresh young corn!

Joining the Planting Enrichment Program makes the students realise how
farmers work to provide food for the people. This will hopefully develop their
feeling of respect for farmers. Furthermore, during the process of planting the
students also learn how to take care of the plants by watering and weeding them.
This will arouse their feeling of love towards nature!!!

Okay then.
Bravo JH Students!
Enjoy your harvest!
