Attach crankshaft hub (1).

Install central bolt.

Attach central bolt with special tool 0490504 (00 9 120).

TIGHTENING TORQUES:
Torsion damper (hub) to crankshaft (M14 X 1.5 X 12.9)
Tightening torque: 50 Nm
Angle of rotation : 180

Dismount special tool 0493940 (11 9 280) from hub.

Insert oil dipstick (1).

Insert screw (1) and tighten down.

TIGHTENING TORQUES:
Screw plug, gear case upper section (m22 x 1.5) - Replace sealing ring

Install exhaust camshaft sprocket (2) with mounted timing chain (1).
Fit bolt (3) and tighten.
TIGHTENING TORQUES:
Camshaft sprocket to exhaust camshaft (M10 x 30)
Tightening torque: 20 Nm
Angle of rotation: 90

30. Install intake adjuster

Note: VANOS unit of intake camshaft is marked with the letters IN.

Note: The installation position of the VANOS unit can be freely selected.

Install VANOS unit (1).

Fit timing chain (2).
Place central bolt (3) in position and hand-tighten.
Secure central bolt (1) with special tool 0490504 (00 9 120). TIGHTENING TORQUES:

VANOS (variable camshaft timing control) to intake camshaft (M10 X 52 - REPLACE SCREW)
Jointing Torque: 20 Nm
Angle of rotation: 180

Mount slide rail (1).

Insert bolts (2). TIGHTENING TORQUES:

Standard screw connection (M6)
Tightening torque: 8 Nm +/-1 Nm
31. hecking camshaft timing (N14)
Note: Modified procedure for timing.

 The timing is not determined at firing TDC of cylinder no. 1.

 All pistons are in the 90 position.
 Check locking of adjuster.
 Observe direction of rotation (direction of rotation clockwise when viewed towards timing drive
side).

Note: Reverse rotation of the engine is not permitted, test adjustment values will be distorted.

Note: Check locking on VANOS unit.

 Turn camshaft in direction of rotation at hexagon head.

 The adjustment unit is locked in the initial setting when the camshaft is non-positively connected
to the adjustment unit.
 If no fixed connection to the camshaft is established, the adjuster is faulty and must be replaced.

Note: Maximum force 10 to 15 Nm.

 If play of VANOS unit is below 10 degrees, the adjuster is OK.

 To check the lock of VANOS unit: twist intake camshaft in direction of arrow using a open-end
spanner (1).
 If play of VANOS unit is above 10 degrees, the adjuster is not OK.

Note: llustration shows N12

Both camshafts are in the correct installation position when the designation (IN) for intake camshaft points
upwards.
In the case of the exhaust camshaft, the designation (EX) must point upwards.
Position of intake camshaft (1) points at an angle to the right and upwards.

Position of exhaust camshaft (1) points at an angle to the right and downwards.
Screw in special tool0493971 (11 9 340) into cylinder head.
Preload timing chain with special tool 0496778 (00 9 460). TIGHTENING TORQUES:
Preload timing chain: 0.6 Nm

Remove special tool0495936 (11 9 551).

Remove special tool0495937 (11 9 552).

WARNING! Risk of mixing up dowel hole.

 Balance hole and dowel hole may be mixed up; all pistons must be in the 90 position.
 If necessary, determine by means of spark plug bore.

Further twist the crankshaft of the central bolt by 720 degrees.

Position crankshaft with special tool 0495939 (11 9 590).

WARNING!
Observe direction of rotation (direction of rotation always clockwise when viewed towards timing drive
side).

 Reverse rotation of the engine is not permitted, test adjustment values will be distorted.

Install chain tensioner piston

Note: A new sealing ring must be installed by
service personnel when the chain tensioner is fitted.

Install chain tensioner (1) and tighten.

TIGHTENING TORQUES:
Chain tensioner to cylinder head (M22 X 1.5): 80 Nm
Install vibration damper

Install vibration absorber.

 Insert screws (1) and tighten. TIGHTENING TORQUES:

 Torsion damper to crank shaft hub (M8 X 6): 28 Nm

35.Installing friction wheel

Screw-fit friction wheel in sequence 1 to 3 TIGHTENING TORQUES:
Friction wheel to engine: 9 Nm

Slowly retract tensioning strap (1) in direction of arrow.

Plastic ring (2) must engage in friction gear housing.

36.Install front right wheel arch cover

Feed in wheel arch cover (5).

Insert screws (4) and tighten.
Fit nut (3) and tighten.
Attach screw rivets (1 and 2)
37.Install front right wheel

38.Install all spark plugs

WARNING!
Risk of damage!

 Dropping the spark plug into the spark plug shaft can lead to reduction of the electrode gap and
therefore impair smooth running of the engine, especially when idling.
 Do not drop spark plug into spark plug shaft!
 First hand-tighten spark plugs with special tool 0495560 (12 1 220) and screw in to engine with a
jointed extension.
 Tighten spark plugs with torque wrench, special tool 0495560 (12 1 220) and with a jointed
extension. TIGHTENING TORQUES:
